Evaluation Of In-Line Direct Filtration For Virus Removal, Behjat Sadat Malek, Dennis B. George, Daniel S. Filip, Bill B. Barnett
Reports
The purposes of this study were to evaluate virus removal in treatment of water supplies by an in-line direct filtration pilot plant system and to suggest a system design to enhance virus removal. Isotherm and jar tests were conducted to evaluate the effects of pH, sodium ion concentration, and coagulants (alum and cationic polyelectrolytes Cat-Floc T, Nalco 8102, and 8103) on the bacteriophage MS2 contained in water. Isotherm studies were also conducted to assess the kinetic adsorption of MS2 to sand, anthracite, and garnet. Rapid sand, dual-media, and multi-media filters were tested in continuous in-line direct filtration operations. Approximately 95 …

Since nearly every water resource managment choice has two or more sides, differences must be resolved in decision making. Equitable resolution requires an understanding of the reasons for the differences. These reasons originate in the implemented plans have physical-environmental, economic, social, cultural, and political impacts at levels ranging from local to national or international in scope. Decisions are made by individuals and groups impacted in all of these dimensions and at all of these levels; the decisions generate additional impacts; and the entire interactive process changes water management practice in ways outside the control of any one decision point or …

Groundwater Heat Pump: An Efficient Way To Heat And Cool Your Home, Calvin G. Clyde, E. W. Vendell, K. Hagen
Reports
Engineers at the Utah Water Research Laboratory and the Mechanical Engineering Department at Utah State University have looked into the evonomic feasibility of groundwater heat pumps for residential heating and cooling in the Utah climate. They have found that this type of system conserves evergy and may cost less than conventional heating systems. By using a heat pump, thermal energy can be taken from goundwater and can be used to heat homes in the winder and cool them in the summer. If you are a Utah homeowner in an area where the goundwater heat pump system is economical, you may …
Erosion Control During Highway Construction: Volume 1, Calvin G. Clyde, C. Earl Israelsen, Paul E. Packer
Erosion Control During Highway Construction: Volume 1, Calvin G. Clyde, C. Earl Israelsen, Paul E. Packer
Reports
Summary: Highway constuction as we know it today is a high-risk activity with respect to engendering soil erosion. In earlier days of road building, when rights-of-way were generally narrow and excavations mostly shollow, erosion was rarely a serious problem. Only occasionally was it considered necessary to design and apply specific measures for erosion control. With the advent of the superhighway involving far greater widths of right-of-way, and much deeper disturbance of the natural ground to affort the horizontal and vertical highway geometry necessary for high-speed travel, came a several fold increase in erosion potential and a direct need for specific …

Reports
A probabilistic river water quality model is developed with the capability of determinging the joint and marginal probability density function of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and dissolved oxygen (DO) at any point in a river. The one dimensional steady-state model can be applied to a river system with any reasonable number of point loads and diversions and lateral surface and subsurface inflow. The model can simultaneously consider randomness in the intital conditions, inputs, and coefficients of the water quality equations. Any empirical or known distribution can be used for the initial condition. The randomness in the water quality equation inputs …

Modeling The Performance Of The Intermittent Sand Filter, P. A. Cowan, E. J. Middlebrooks
Reports
Several models were developed to predict the efficiency of the intermittent sand filter (ISF) in removing algae from wastewater stabilization pond effluent; volatile suspended solids (VSS) was the analytical technique used to identify algal concentrations. The first (ISF model) and second (modified ISF model) models consisted of two distinct portions: a surface algal layer (SAL) component and a sand phase component. In the ISF model, the sand phase component was described in terms of 20 empirical sand filter efficiency terms (20 ^ coefficients); in the modified ISF model, a functional relationship between ^ and filter depth was developed. The modified …

Cost Allocation Alternatives For The Senegal River Development Program, J. Paul Riley, Jay C. Andersen, A. Bruce Bishop, David S. Bowles, John E. Keith
Reports
The primary purpose of the study reported herein is to present methods for using estimated project benefits as the basis for distributing the capital, oeprating, maintenance, and replacement costs associated with the proposed Senegal River development program. The problem is complicated because the Senegal River is an international stream, so that it is necessary to consider not only the various economic use sectors involved with the program, but also the three separate countries of Mali, Mauritania, and Senegal. In attempting to meet the primary objective stated above, the report proposes an economic model which estimates economic benefits of the development …

Feasibility Of Accelerating Construction Of The Central Utah Project, Trevor C. Hughes, L. Douglas James, Frank Haws, C. Earl Israelsen
Reports
Introduction: Objective: In April, 1977 the President's statement on water projects recommended that a number of federal water development projects, including the Conneville unit of the Central Utah Project, not be completed. The ensuing efforts of project supporters brought about a review of the projected costs, benefits, and other political, social and environmental factors and consequently, the current issue is not whether or not the project should be constructed. Rather, the objective of this report is to examine the following question: Given the fact that at least the 5 units of the CUP which have already been authorized will eventually …

Utah's 1977 Drought, Trevor C. Hughes, Clark Bigler, Jerry Olds, Richard Griffin, Arlo Richardson, L. Douglas James, Norris Stenquist, James Harvey
Reports
The Utah Drought of 1976-1977 has been characterized as the wettest drought in history. It was produced by the driest winter season of record followed by summer rains which were much wetter than normal in many regions of the state. Stream-flow is highly correlated with winter rather than summer precipitation and therefore the most severe impacts of the drought were related to the record low stream-flow during 1977 plus the ski industry impacts which were directly related to 1976-1977 snowfall. Drought impacts upon several sectors of the economy plus the extensive responses of all levels of government in the form …

Engineering Properties And Slope Stability Settlement Analysis Related To Phosphate Mine Spoil Dumps In Southeastern Idaho, Richard E. Riker, Loren R. Anderson, Roland W. Jeppson
Reports
The engineering properties of waste spoil from phosphate mines in Southeastern Idaho were determined through field and laboratory testing. Based on these properties, the slope stability and settlement characteristics of phosphate spoil dumps were determined. Hypothetical examples illustrate possible modes of foundation failures. Such failures might occur when weak foundation soils exist of when there is a lack of embankment-foundation preparation prior to the disposal of waste material. Adequate protection against slope failure occurring through the embankment material can be accomplished by grading embankment finish slopes to 2 ½ horizontal to 1 vertical or flatter and taking proper caution to …

Based on the equations of continuity and motion for sediment transport and the dynamic equation of spatially varied open channel flow, a computer simulation of erosion is developed. The water source for the erosion simulation may be rainfall or snowmelt. To provide snowmelt a computer simulation giving the rate of snowmelt from limited climatic data has been adapted to work conjunctively with the erosion model to provide a dynamic solution to erosion and overland flow, from precipitation and other limited climatic data. The computer simulation model has been tested using climatic data at and near the phosphate mine in Southeastern …
