Using a choice-based conjoint analysis, we measured willingness to pay (WTP) for an increase in the share of specific Renewable Energy (RE) technologies, namely solar, wind, biomass, and small-scale hydropower. The study found that on average, Metro Manila (MM) households are WTP an additional 19.3% of their electricity bill for an additional 20% share of RE in electric power capacity that is sourced from solar power. The corresponding WTP for the other RE technologies are substantially lower - 11.9% for biomass, 10.5% for wind, and 9.8% for small-scale hydropower. The skewed preference for solar energy augurs well for the government's …

The Effect Of Blasting Using Low-Density Emulsion Explosives, Vinko Škrlec, Mario Dobrilović, Barbara Štimac Tumara, Vječislav Bohanek
Journal of Sustainable Mining
Low-density emulsion explosives are essentially blends of an emulsion matrix and a certain amount of gaseous phase inclusions acting as hot spots. With the addition of expanded polystyrene for gaseous sensibilization, the resulting explosive blend was developed to reduce peak values and pressure impulse of gaseous detonation products on surrounding rock. This resulted in a decrease in rock stress and a decrease in cracking zone width outside of the minefield boundary. The use of low-density emulsion explosives correlates with the decrease in the seismic effect of blasting, more precisely, the decrease of induced rock oscillation velocities. The low-density emulsion explosive …
Numerical Simulation On Effect Of Coal Pillar Width On Stability Of Retained Roadway: A Case Study Of Khe Cham Coal Mine, Vietnam, Quang Phuc Le, Tien Dung Le
Numerical Simulation On Effect Of Coal Pillar Width On Stability Of Retained Roadway: A Case Study Of Khe Cham Coal Mine, Vietnam, Quang Phuc Le, Tien Dung Le
Journal of Sustainable Mining
When extracting coal seams in Vietnam underground mines, coal pillars are often left unmined for the protection of retained roadways in the longwall mining method. During longwall mining operations, coal pillars are often placed where high-stress concentrations occur in the abutment pressure zone of adjacent panels, especially when extracting seams under hard-to-cave main roof conditions. The instability of coal pillars under the loading of the main roof may cause the roadway to collapse, threatening the safe operation of a coal mine. This paper presents a detailed numerical investigation of the effect of coal pillar width on the stability of retained …

Giving Workers The 'Green Light': Defining Green Jobs And Exploring Their Distribution In The Us, Cole Fuller
Honors Theses and Capstones
As the United States continues to adopt sustainable practices and policies to combat climate change, it is important to consider how these green changes affect the workforce. The term ‘Green Jobs’ has become the colloquial term to refer to sustainable occupations, and despite its popularity in the literature, it often has different meanings in different settings. Our first goal was to explore these definitions and establish one to contextualize our research. We used data from the Occupational Information Network, and used their green job definition, which classifies jobs as green if, and how, they are impacted by the greening economy. …
Investigating Inland Waterway Transport Through A Sustainable Development Perspective: A Case Study Of Magdalena River (Colombia), Natalia Calderón-Rivera
Investigating Inland Waterway Transport Through A Sustainable Development Perspective: A Case Study Of Magdalena River (Colombia), Natalia Calderón-Rivera
World Maritime University Ph.D. Dissertations
The development of transport systems significantly influences economies, growth, and welfare of populations. However, these systems can have negative consequences, such as water and air pollution, traffic congestion, noise, and biodiversity loss. To address these challenges, it is essential to implement strategies that mitigate negative effects while improving the environmental, social, and economic conditions of the population. In this regard, inland water transport (IWT) is globally recognized as a more sustainable transport alternative due to its high cargo load capacities and comparatively lower environmental and social impacts. In Colombia, the Magdalena River – the country’s most important river basin – …

Concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) have led to environmental challenges, specifically waste management. Swine CAFOs generate large amounts of waste, requiring proper treatment to avoid air and water pollution. Conventional waste management technologies, such as lagoon and spray field systems, do not prevent air and water pollution impacts. Research for the past few decades led to recommendations for waste treatment technologies superior to lagoons and spray fields. Private environmental sustainability initiatives focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the food supply chain have implemented biogas digester projects for capturing methane in covered swine lagoons to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. However, …

Mechanisms Of Dendritic Shorting In Lithium Metal Batteries With Li7la3zr2o12 Solid Electrolytes, Lukas Karapin-Springorum
Pomona Senior Theses
Energy storage will play a crucial role in efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change caused by greenhouse gas emissions from human activity. Lithium metal batteries using solid electrolytes like Li7La3Zr2O12 have higher energy density than lithium-ion batteries, which may enable a more rapid and complete electrification of transportation. However, lithium metal batteries suffer from undesirable short-circuiting when metallic lithium deposits connect the two electrodes. It has been debated whether these lithium dendrites generally grow directionally from the anode or are generated by the reduction of lithium ions inside the solid electrolyte, …
