Introduction: Quantitative studies on drinking water perceptions in Appalachia are limited. High-profile water infrastructure failures in the U.S. and Eastern Kentucky, coupled with human-made and natural disasters in the Appalachian Region, have likely impacted opinions regarding tap water.
Purpose: To use existing unexplored data to describe baseline tap water v. bottled water consumption in Kentucky.
Methods: Telephone-based cross-sectional data were obtained from the 2013 Kentucky Health Issues Poll (KHIP) directed by the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky. Among many items in KHIP, self-reported consumption of bottled water over tap water, reasons for bottled water use, and demographic data were obtained. …

To explore the mechanism of water inrush induced by fault activation under mining, experimental studies were conducted on the shear deformation and permeability evolution of crushed rock mass in fault zone. Specifically, a set of compression-shear-seepage test system for crushed rock mass was designed according to the principle of fluid-solid coupling, with the coupling process of shear deformation and seepage realized. This study aims to further investigate the stimulation effect of pulsed ultrasonic excitation on coal pore structures. Using an ultrasonic excitation test system for gas-containing coals, this study conducted ultrasonic excitation tests on coals under continuous and interactive pulses with ultrasonic power of 800 W and 1000 W. Through low-pressure CO2 adsorption tests, low-temperature nitrogen adsorption tests, and the mercury injection capillary pressure (MICP) tests, this study explored the evolutionary patterns of parameters of various coal pores with full-scale pore sizes, including macropores (> 50 nm), mesopores (2‒50 nm), and micropores (< 2 nm). The test results are as follows: (1) Pulsed ultrasonic waves can expand coal pores. The pore volume of coals was primarily provided by micropores and macropores, with mesopores representing a small proportion. As the pressure-preserved controller is a core component of the deep coal in-situ pressure-preserved coring device, its sealing design plays a decisive role in the effect of pressure-preserved coring. In order to obtain the optimal sealing structure, a two-dimensional axisymmetric nonlinear contact model was established for the sealing structure of the pressure-preserved controller. The seismicity level induced by blasting in the Polish copper mines is very important inlight of the efficiency of active rockburst prevention and safe conduct of blasting operations in the vicinity of the mining infrastructure such as shafts, workings, or function chambers (e.g., workshops, storages, etc.). Knowledge of the seismic vibrations’ peak value might be the basis for designing blasting works in a way that ensures desired seismic effect. The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework adopted by the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) at the Conference of Parties (COP15) has set a series of targets, including protecting at least 30% of the oceans by 2030 worldwide. This study investigates the impact on water quality of combined agricultural best management practices cover crop and minimum tillage, alongside an examination of techniques used to collect those samples. Edge-of-field (EOF) water quality samples were collected from 11 working farms during a two-year paired field experiment. Results showed significant reductions in nutrient concentrations, increased discharge, and mixed findings regarding nutrient mass transport post-treatment. A suite of EOF collection techniques were compared using in-situ automated water sampling systems sampling the same runoff events. Sampling protocols influenced nutrient concentrations in composite samples, but unexpected variance in velocity sensors affected measured discharge, making …

Determining GSI as a representation of the presence of rock mass in slope analysis continues to develop. The development of the quantitative GSI method was carried out because the basic (qualitative) GSI values were deemed too subjective so the results from the use of the quantitative GSIwere expected to be more objective and accurate. The method used is to combine 3 GSI quantitative methods to find GSI based on surface conditions and joint structure.
