According to regulations of the mining industry in China, it is necessary to carry out gas hazard prevention projects in advance when mining coal seams with gas hazard potential, and gas geological research should be taken as the basic work for optimal design and effective construction of gas hazard prevention projects. Engaging Hard-To-Reach Audiences Through Internal Interdisciplinary And External Diverse Collaborations, Erin M. Garrett, Ashley J. Belle

Through a combination of internal and external collaborations, consumer-based energy education designed for hard-to-reach audiences was successfully delivered statewide by an interdisciplinary Extension team. Program participants representing rural residents, senior citizens, and low-income audiences demonstrated improvements in knowledge and increased intention to change their home electricity usage behaviors. This outreach work can serve as a model for other Extension services to combine interdisciplinary teams with community partnerships to reach underserved audiences statewide.

Water quality degradation and metal contamination in groundwater are serious concerns in an arid region with scanty water resources. This study aimed at evaluating the source of uranium (U) and potential health risk assessment in groundwater of the arid region of western Rajasthan and northern Gujarat. The probable source of vanadium (V) and fluorine (F) was also identified. U and trace metal concentration, along with physicochemical characteristics were determined for 265 groundwater samples collected from groundwater of duricrusts and palaeochannels of western Rajasthan and northern Gujarat. The latest weight of evidence stock assessment for Australian herring indicates that management arrangements introduced in 2015, combined with suitable environmental conditions, have led to the recovery of the resource.
The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) tracks our aquatic resources by undertaking weight of evidence stock assessments every three to five years.
DPIRD has undertaken four contemporary weight of evidence stock assessments of Australian herring since 2000.
The 2000 assessment (22 years ago) indicated the catch was sustainable. However, by 2013 the Australian herring stock status had become high risk and ‘unacceptable’, and new measures were introduced. …

The use of solid thermal storage (STS) as an energy storage device in insulated solar electric cookers (ISEC) was explored using a thermal simulation before retrofitting an existing cooker without energy storage and testing it under several conditions. STS sizing, material selection, and geometry were examined from both theoretical and practical perspectives and re-examined following experimental results. Characterization of the system’s thermal interfaces and methods to improve their thermal conductivities were investigated resulting in several performance enhancements to the system.

This project examines the development of a smart boat which could serve as a possible marine research apparatus. The smart boat consists of a miniature vessel containing a low-cost microcontroller to live stream a camera feed, GPS telemetry, and compass data through its own WiFi access point. The smart boat also has the potential for autonomous navigation. My project captivated the interest of several members of California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo’s (Cal Poly SLO) Marine Science Department faculty, who proposed a variety of fascinating and valuable smart boat applications.

This study evaluates the important sustainability determinants that affect factors’ success in meeting their sustainability goals when conducting infrastructure construction projects in California. The study implemented the online survey method to evaluate the sustainability characteristics that infrastructure industry professionals currently are aware of under the current situation in California. A data set of 25 validated survey responses is used for statistical data analysis using analysis of variables, Kruskal-Wallis tests, and two sample t-tests. The analysis results showed that the median response values for the six major sustainability categories do not show any significant difference. The results also showed that no …

Methane (CH4) is the second most abundant anthropogenic greenhouse gas within the atmosphere, comprising ~16% of the total anthropogenic greenhouse gas composition on Earth. It has an ~12-year lifetime relative to its eventual oxidation via reaction with tropospheric hydroxyl radicals (OH), and has a 100-year indirect global warming potential (GWP) approximately ranging between 28-36 [Environmental Protection Agency, 2021]. However, well-organized efforts to make campuses "sustainable" are not common, and the efforts are modest compared to the institutional capabilities. During the writing of the inaugural Boston Research Advisory Group (BRAG) report both NASA and NOAA announced that 2015 was the warmest year on record, beating the previous record set in 2014, by 0.29 °F. Just five years later (during the writing of this report), NASA announced that 2020 had tied 2016 for the warmest year, breaking the previous record by a stunning 1.84 °F, and that the last seven years have been the warmest seven-year period on record.

The pore structure of coal is the key to coalbed methane (CBM) exploration and exploitation, and coal mining safety. Compared to primary coals, tectonically deformed coals (TDCs) have stronger heterogeneity and are of great importance in coal reservoir study. Here, the pore structure and surface roughness of brittle TDCs were obtained with atomic force microscopy (AFM) and NanoScope Analysis and Gwyddion software. The results show that tectonic deformation generally promotes the pore development in brittle TDCs, but the extent of tectonic impact varies greatly among different brittle TDCs. There are successful cases of large-scale CBM development of low-rank coal abroad. Though China is rich in low-rank CBM resources, their exploration and development progress is slow. Considering the low exploration degree and for the purpose of further understanding the accumulation conditions of medium-low rank CBM and guiding exploration practice in Houxia Basin, seismic and geological analysis, as well as coal petrography analysis and drainage production data of drilled wells are carried out in the study area. The fracturing construction curve is considered to be an important basis for reflecting the fracturing effect, while the dynamic change of reservoir permeability in the fracturing stage can more intuitively reflect the effect of fracture formation. In Yushen mining area of Shaanxi Province, a blasting expansion fissure on the eastern side of the Xiwan Open-pit Coal Mine communicates the water-bearing body of burnt rock outside the pit, and an incrementally open water gushing channel with a length greater than 65 m is formed. The water volume gushing from burnt rock stabilizes at about 400 m3/h and the flow velocity is as high as 0.36 m/s, resulting in a series of problems in ecology, environmental protection, economy and safety.
