Final Report - Lake Mead Monitoring Program, James E. Deacon

Publications (WR)

The Lake Mead monitoring program has developed a substantial body of information on the physical, chemical and biological limnology of Lake Mead since 1972. This report summarizes pertinent aspects of that data, with emphasis on studies completed in 1975 -76. It is our continuing hope that the data developed by us will be useful to an ever broader group of users of the water resource represented by Lake Mead. We have been privileged to see our data have a significant influence in some very important water resource decisions over the past four years. There is every reason to expect that …

Evaluation Of A Recreational Lake Rehabilitation Project, Clyde Brashier

2019: Dr. Clyde Brashier

Lake Herman, a recreational, shallow, warm water prairie lake near Madison, South Dakota drain in extensively cultivated watershed and acts as a siltation basin for a chain of four lakes. The lake is more than half silted in and since 1968 various rehabilitation efforts have been made, including the construction of silt traps and lake dredging.

Continuation of the monitoring of twenty plus chemical levels and biological populations of green algae, blue-green algae and diatoms has revealed two major changes: (1) ortho phosphate and total phosphorus levels (which increased markedly with the beginning of dredging) have decreased since dredging has …

Socioeconomic Impacts Of The Second Stage Of The Southern Nevada Water Project And Its Alternatives, William T. White, Bernard Malamud, John E. Nixon

Publications (WR)

This study evaluates the socioeconomic impacts of the Second Stage of the Southern Nevada Water Project of the United States Bureau of Reclamation, comparing that project with the alternatives of importing water from Nevada areas somewhat removed from the Las Vegas Valley and of leaving the water supply of the Valley basically as it is, the no project alternative.

The study follows, with adaptations and extensions, the general methodology for socioeconomic impact studies as developed and still being evolved in successive socioeconomic analyses of Bureau of Reclamation water projects. The methodology recognizes that the complexity of modern society and water …

The Ord River Regeneration Project. 3. Eight Years Of Progress, K Fitzgerald Jan 1968

The Ord River Regeneration Project. 3. Eight Years Of Progress, K Fitzgerald

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

REGENERATION of degraded areas in regions of marginal rainfall is a slow process under the best of conditions, but on the Ord River Catchment, where much top-soil had been removed, the problem was unusually severe.

In many areas top-soil will have to be rebuilt before vegetation can be re-established.

This will be a long, slow process and regeneration will proceed through gradual plant succession from the "pioneer" annual species through to the permanent and more productive perennial species needed for a stable catchment area.

The project will be constructed in three stages. Stage development is desirable …

Water Resources Of Tacoma, Washington, Richard Martin Glaser Jul 1967

Water Resources Of Tacoma, Washington, Richard Martin Glaser

Graduate Student Research Papers

This study explores the fresh water and hydroelectricity resources of the City of Tacoma, Washington. The history and development of the water supply and hydroelectric facilities is examined. One can see that the development of the water resources has been directly affected by the growth in population and industry and that the nearness to the city of development sites has been an aid in this development. With the amount of water available at present and the increase in hydro-electric facilities during this decade, the future outlook for Tacoma in the field of water resources seems bright.

Soil Erosion By Water In W.A. Cropland : A Serious And Widespread Problem, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Much wheatbelt agriculture is based on thin topsoils which are inherently infertile by world standards. Erosion even to the depth of cultivation will cause the loss of:—

• most of the original topsoil

• the phosphate build up from years of "super" applications

• any accumulation of organic matter and humus.

Land Preparation For Border Irrigation, B Swan Jan 1963

Land Preparation For Border Irrigation, B Swan

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

LARGE amounts of water may be lost through excess run-off and deep percolation.

Proper preparation of irrigation land can help to minimise these losses.

This preparation is done by grading or levelling so that the original ground surface is shaped to allow for a more uniform distribution of water.

Manage Your Rainfall For Maximum Production, J E. Watson

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

TTOW much would an extra inch of rainfall be worth to you? Much sloping land loses this much and more by run-off every year.

The soil is the main asset of your farm, but your profits depend on how you manage the rain which falls on it.

Overcoming Stock Watering Problems In The Kimberleys, B Swan Jan 1960

Overcoming Stock Watering Problems In The Kimberleys, B Swan

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

ONE of the ever-present problems of the pastoral areas is that of providing: watering-points in reasonably close proximity to the grazing areas.

All too frequently, the country on the river frontages and that in the vicinity of the water-holes becomes eaten out and although there may be ample feed on other portions of the run, it is too far distant from the available water to be effectively utilised.

Water Usage Trials With Bananas On The Gascoyne, W M. Nunn

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THE banana industry at Carnarvon is an unusual one by most agricultural standards.

Normally a tropical plant liking relatively humid conditions in a high rainfall, the banana is cultivated at Carnarvon in an area of extremely low rainfall and with relatively low humidity throughout the year.

Water is pumped to irrigate the crop from the sands of the Gascoyne River bed or from bores adjacent to the river course.
