Module 05: Public Health & Water Quality
The purpose of this lesson is to revisit the driving question introduced in lesson 1 of this module: How can I make my neighborhood a healthier place to live? Students synthesize what they have learned across the module - that healthy neighborhoods have green space, robust social networks, effective waste delivery and waste removal, clean air and healthy foods. They use this general information to analyze a proposed exercise path. Students work in groups to address the action plan topic for this module: resources, both social and material. For this action plan, there is a specific focus on discussing resources …

Effectiveness Of Plastic Ordinances In Santa Monica, Ca: Do Regulations At The Municipal Level Reduce Plastic Waste?, John W. Hayes
Effectiveness Of Plastic Ordinances In Santa Monica, Ca: Do Regulations At The Municipal Level Reduce Plastic Waste?, John W. Hayes
School of Public Policy Capstones
Plastic is a cheap, robust and versatile material with numerous practical uses that contribute to the convenience of modern day life. However the very same properties that make it uniquely diverse and hardy also contribute to the hazards it poses to the ecosystems and human health. If current consumption and manufacturing practices remain unchanged, there will be hundreds of millions of additional tons of plastic introduced into the environment over the coming decades. To mitigate this issue, some cities, such as Santa Monica, have implemented ordinances and policies directly aimed at this growing problem, albeit with ambiguous results. To better …

006— Pretreatment And Fiber Content Analysis Of Cannabis Sativa, Dina Bu, Jessica Roggie, Sarah Schmidlin, Barnabas Gikonyo
GREAT Day Posters
Cannabis sativa commonly known as hemp is one of the fastest-growing plants whose refined products have immense commercial value. Various products include refined hemp such as: biofuels, biodegradable plastics, textiles, dietary supplements, paper, clothing, and much more. Hemp fibers are also used in construction and manufacturing applications by strengthening their composite products. Hemp is a high yielding, sustainable, and environmentally friendly crop due to its various qualities, and has the potential to yield valuable raw materials for a great number of applications. Our research evaluates the pretreatment of hemp as well as the comparative analysis of the fiber content thereof. …

041— Fiber Decomposition And Pretreatment Analysis Of Cannabis Sativa L.: Hemp, Dina Bu, Jessica Roggie, Sarah Schmidlin, Barnabas Gikonyo
GREAT Day Posters
Hemp is a subspecies of Cannabis sativa L. along with marijuana, yet the two differ in chemical constituent levels of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). Hemp contains 0.3% THC, compared to marijuana 17.1%, allowing it to be a safe and compelling biomass for investigation. The refined products of hemp are vast due to its fast-growing properties; therefore various commercial industries have included refined hemp in biofuels, biodegradable plastics, textiles, dietary supplements, paper, clothing, and much more. Construction and manufacturing applications have also been seen to include hemp to strengthen their composite products. The high-yielding, sustainable, and environmentally friendly qualities …

Lesson Plan - Land Use Game: Complex Decisions, Center For Urban Resilience
Module 02: Land Use
The purpose of this lesson is for students to simulate decisions that may influence land use patterns in a city. To do this, the students will play a board game that has both mandated Policy Event cards and decision cards that students control. The decision cards consist of three potential options and each option has different monetary, ecological, and social consequences. The students play the game in groups of two to three and then discuss the impacts of their decisions on the future of their city. The lesson concludes with a discussion of how well the data collection went and …

Lesson Plan - Biophysical And Social Drivers, Center For Urban Resilience
Module 02: Land Use
In this lesson, students will learn about the various biophysical and social drivers which impact land use in detail. They will then use their knowledge about urban land use as a class to explore various data sources (maps, charts, figures, etc.) to determine how these drivers have influenced land use in New Orleans. Students will then relate their understanding of the case study to the Ecological Services Model.

Lesson Plan - Urban Sprawl, Center For Urban Resilience
Module 02: Land Use
The purpose of this lesson is for students to explore urban sprawl. They will first analyze urban growth patterns at the national level and then compare the density changes associated with various urban areas in the United States. Finally, they will research information about their own metropolitan area to conclude if it is currently contributing to urban sprawl and suggest how land use policies may have contributed to its current state.
