Source And Magnitude Of Error In An Inexpensive Image-Based Water Level Measurement System, Troy E. Gilmore, François Birgand, Kenneth W. Chapman
Source And Magnitude Of Error In An Inexpensive Image-Based Water Level Measurement System, Troy E. Gilmore, François Birgand, Kenneth W. Chapman
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Recent technological advances have opened the possibility to use webcams and images as part of the environmental monitoring arsenal. The potential sources and magnitude of uncertainties inherent to an image-based water level measurement system are evaluated in an experimental design in the laboratory. Sources of error investigated include image resolution, lighting effects, perspective, lens distortion and water meniscus. Image resolution and meniscus were found to weigh the most in the overall uncertainty of this system. Image distortion, although largely taken into account by the software developed, may also significantly add to uncertainty. Results suggest that ‘‘flat’’ images with little distortion …

Quantifying The Effects Of Pesticide Exposure On Annual Reproductive Success Of Birds, Matthew A. Etterson, Richard S. Bennett
Quantifying The Effects Of Pesticide Exposure On Annual Reproductive Success Of Birds, Matthew A. Etterson, Richard S. Bennett
United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
The Markov chain nest productivity model (MCnest) was developed for quantifying the effects of specific pesticide‐use scenarios on the annual reproductive success of simulated populations of birds. Each nesting attempt is divided into a series of discrete phases (e.g., egg laying, incubation, nestling rearing), and results from avian toxicity tests are used to represent the types of effects possible in the field during each breeding phase. The expected exposure dose each day throughout the breeding season can be compared to the toxicity thresholds assigned to each breeding phase to determine whether the nest attempt is at risk. The primary output …

Economic Life Cycle Assessment Of Aeration Blowers Used In Waste Water Treatment Systems, Manogaran Shriram
Economic Life Cycle Assessment Of Aeration Blowers Used In Waste Water Treatment Systems, Manogaran Shriram
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
Economic Life Cycle Assessment of Aeration Blowers used in Waste Water Treatment systems A substantial amount of energy is needed in water supply and treatment systems to convert the unprocessed water into safe drinking water or to purify wastewater prior to discharge to the environment. There is lot of water and energy lost in the process of collection, discharge and delivery of the treated drinking water as well. Therefore the energy and water consumption by these systems have an indirect effect on the local municipality in terms of high energy consumption and in permissive waste of water. Thus, an exhaustive …
Fluctuating Viability Selection On Morphology Of Cliff Swallows Is Driven By Climate, Charles R. Brown, Mary Bomberger Brown, Erin A. Roche
Fluctuating Viability Selection On Morphology Of Cliff Swallows Is Driven By Climate, Charles R. Brown, Mary Bomberger Brown, Erin A. Roche
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
The extent to which fluctuating selection can maintain evolutionary stasis in most populations remains an unresolved question in evolutionary biology. Climate has been hypothesized to drive reversals in the direction of selection among different time periods and may also be responsible for intense episodic selection caused by rare weather events. We measured viability selection associated with morphological traits in cliff swallows (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) in western Nebraska, USA, over a 14-year period following a rare climatic event. We used mark-recapture to estimate the annual apparent survival of over 26 000 individuals whose wing, tail, tarsus, and bill had been …

Clonal Diversity Of Quaking Aspen (Populus Tremuloides): How Multiple Clones May Add To Theresilience And Persistence Of This Forest Type, Richard Scott Gardner
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Aspen forests and woodlands are widespread across the western United States and are a primary component of many ecosystems in the west. Aspen is a clonal species, with reproduction occurring both by root sprouting (suckering) and seeding. Traditionally, western aspen forests were thought to consist almost entirely of large clones established several thousands of years ago, with seeding events being rare and ecologically negligible. Although clones in the western US can grow to be many acres, recent studies have demonstrated a far greater proportion of small clones than had been previously thought to exist. In this study I wanted to …

Hidden Markov Models For Estimating Animal Mortality From Anthropogenic Hazards, Matthew A. Etterson
Hidden Markov Models For Estimating Animal Mortality From Anthropogenic Hazards, Matthew A. Etterson
United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
Carcass searches are a common method for studying the risk of anthropogenic hazards to wildlife, including nontarget poisoning and collisions with anthropogenic structures. Typically, numbers of carcasses found must be corrected for scavenging rates and imperfect detection. Parameters for these processes (scavenging and detection) are often estimated using carcass distribution trials in which researchers place carcasses in the field at known times and locations. In this manuscript I develop a variety of estimators based on multi-event or hidden Markov models for use under different experimental conditions. I apply the estimators to two case studies of avian mortality, one from pesticide …
Phylogeography Of The California Gnatcatcher (Polioptila Californica) Using Multilocus Dna Sequences And Ecological Niche Modeling: Implications For Conservation, Robert M. Zink, Jeffrey G. Groth, Hernan Vázquez-Miranda
Phylogeography Of The California Gnatcatcher (Polioptila Californica) Using Multilocus Dna Sequences And Ecological Niche Modeling: Implications For Conservation, Robert M. Zink, Jeffrey G. Groth, Hernan Vázquez-Miranda
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
An important step in conservation is to identify whether threatened populations are evolutionarily discrete and significant to the species. A prior mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) phylogeographic study of the California Gnatcatcher (Polioptila californica) revealed no geographic structure and, thus, did not support the subspecies validity of the threatened coastal California Gnatcatcher (P. c. californica). The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service concluded that mtDNA data alone were insufficient to test subspecies taxonomy. We sequenced eight nuclear loci to search for historically discrete groupings that might have been missed by the mtDNA study (which we confirmed with new ND2 …
Assessment Of Tillage Practices Using Landsat-Tm 5 In Nebraska., Sonisa Sharma
Assessment Of Tillage Practices Using Landsat-Tm 5 In Nebraska., Sonisa Sharma
School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Tillage management practices are an important component to crop production and to federal and state conservation efforts and crop subsidy programs. Crop residue created by conservation tillage reduces soil erosion and reduce evaporation from exposed soil. Agro-hydrological models require information on tillage practices to estimate their impacts on soil-water-holding capacity, total evapotranspiration, carbon sequestration, water runoff and water and wind erosion for agricultural lands. Classification of tillage practices using remote sensing offers promise for the rapid collection of tillage information on individual fields over large areas. Using satellite imagery proves to be challenging due to the similarity in spectral signatures …

Implications For Soil Microbe Research: Investigations Into The Feasibility Of Dna Amplification From Stained Roots And Temporal Patterns In Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungal Communities., Catherine Ausland
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi are obligate biotrophs that form symbiotic relationships with 80% of vascular plants around the world. Because of their beneficial relationship with plants in almost all terrestrial ecosystems, the implication of utilizing AM fungi in ecological restorations is immense. The following investigations seek to increase knowledge of the community ecology of AM fungi in order to enhance the potential for use of AM in ecological restoration. The first investigation replicated a novel method of AM visualization in plant roots, utilizing ink and vinegar as less destructive staining agents, to determine whether molecular studies could be feasibly performed …

A Guide To The Pomona College Organic Farm: An Introduction To The Farm’S History And Basic Gardening Skills And Techniques, Adam J. Long
Pomona Senior Theses
It was almost four years ago when I first visited the Pomona College Organic Farm and since then I have learned everything from the basics of gardening to the complex steps required to organize students for events and activities. As I learned more and saw so many students come and go, I saw a need for written documentation that would allow future generations of students to benefit from the skills that my peers and I have learned in our time at the Farm. The value of the Farm is grounded in having a vibrant physical space, and right now the …

Quantifying Free-Roaming Domestic Cat Predation Using Animal-Borne Video Cameras, Kerrie Anne T. Loyd, Sonia M. Hernandez, John Carroll, Kyler J. Abernathy, Greg J. Marshall
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Domestic cats (Felis catus) are efficient and abundant non-native predators. Predation by domestic cats remains a topic of considerable social and scientific debate and warrants attention using improved methods. Predation is likely a function of cat behavior, opportunity to hunt, and local habitat. Previous predation studies relied on homeowner reports of wildlife captures from prey returns to the household and other indirect means. We investigated hunting of wildlife by owned, free-roaming cats in a suburban area of the southeastern USA. Specific research goals included: (1) quantifying the frequency of cat interactions with native wildlife, (2) identifying common prey …

Status Of Nutria (Myocastor Coypus) Populations In The Pacific Northwest And Development Of Associated Control And Management Strategies, With An Emphasis On Metropolitan Habitats, Trevor Robert Sheffels
Dissertations and Theses
The nutria (Myocastor coypus) is a semi-aquatic rodent native to South America that was introduced to the Pacific Northwest, USA, in the 1930s. Primary damage categories from this invasive species include burrowing and herbivory, resulting in habitat degradation. Nutria have become well-established in metropolitan habitats, and anecdotal information suggests the problem has increased in recent years. However, little regional research on the species has been conducted. The scope of this research, which emphasizes metropolitan habitats, includes three primary foci in relation to nutria populations in the Pacific Northwest: modeling habitat suitability, assessing activity and movement patterns, and identifying and managing …

Recapture Heterogeneity In Cliff Swallows: Increased Exposure To Mist Nets Leads To Net Avoidance, Erin A. Roche, Charles R. Brown, Mary Bomberger Brown, Kristen M. Lear
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Ecologists often use mark-recapture to estimate demographic variables such as abundance, growth rate, or survival for samples of wild animal populations. A common assumption underlying mark-recapture is that all animals have an equal probability of detection, and failure to meet or correct for this assumption–as when certain members of the population are either easier or more difficult to capture than other animals–can lead to biased and inaccurate demographic estimates. We built within-year and among-years Cormack-Jolly-Seber recaptures-only models to identify causes of capture heterogeneity for a population of colonially nesting cliff swallows (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) caught using mist-netting as a …

Where Has All The Road Kill Gone?, Charles R. Brown, Mary Bomberger Brown
Where Has All The Road Kill Gone?, Charles R. Brown, Mary Bomberger Brown
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
An estimated 80 million birds are killed by colliding with vehicles on U.S. roads each year [1], and millions more die annually in Europe [2] and elsewhere. Losses to vehicles are a serious problem for which various changes in roadway design and maintenance have been proposed [3]. Yet, given the magnitude of the mortality reported for some species [4], we might expect natural selection to favor individuals that either learn to avoid cars or that have other traits making them less likely to collide with vehicles. If so, the frequency of road kill should decline over time. No information is …
