Coal Geology & Exploration

Objective and Methods This study aims to determine the factors influencing the detection performance of the electromagnetic azimuthal resistivity measurement while drilling (MWD) tool for coal mining in horizontal wells. Through finite element numerical simulations, this study conducted boundary detection using orthogonal coupling coils with multiple frequencies and coil pitches. This allowed for determining the optimal asymmetric arrangement of coils, as well as the optimal working parameters of frequency, source-detector separation distance, and coil pitch suitable for high-resistivity coal seams. Results and Conclusions The comparative study of orthogonal and inclined coils reveals that in the case of directional signals of …

A Method For High-Accuracy Localization Of Microseismic Sources In Mines Based On Finite Element Simulation, Ning Dianyan, Zhu Kaipeng, Zhu Yongsheng, Yuan Shuxia, Zhou Zhenfang

Coal Geology & Exploration

Objective and Methods Microseismic monitoring technology for mines can reflect the deformations and failure of rock layers by capturing low-frequency vibration signals their internal structure generated during the stress-induced deformation and failure of them. Accordingly, water inrush warnings and geologic hazard prediction can be achieved. Acoustic source localization, allowing for the localization of energy release and the early warning of potential hazards, plays a key role in this technology. Presently, when used for acoustic source localization, the time difference of arrival (TDOA) method is facing issues including high algorithmic complexity, significant impacts of probe arrangement on the localization accuracy, and …

A Temporal Fusion Method For Modeling The Rate Of Penetration During Deep Geological Drilling, Zhou Yang, Lu Chengda, Wu Min, Chen Xin, Yao Ningping, Song Haitao, Zhang Youzhen

Coal Geology & Exploration

Objective Given that the rate of penetration (ROP) serves as a key indicator of drilling efficiency, constructing an accurate ROP model holds great significance for optimizing drilling processes and reducing drilling costs. However, deep geological drilling faces challenges such as nonlinearity, non-convex optimization, multiple operating conditions, and temporal variations. Consequently, traditional modeling methods are difficult to adapt to complex geologic environments. Methods To address these challenges, this study proposed a fusion method combined with temporal regulation for ROP modeling: the SVR-MDBO method. Initially, a basic ROP model was constructed using support vector regression (SVR) to solve the nonlinear problem caused …

Frequency-Domain Induced Polarization Responses Of Water-Bearing Anomalous Bodies In The Roadway Tunneling Direction In Coal Mines, Hu Xiongwu, Hu Yuanrong, Wu Rongxin, Yu Hao

Coal Geology & Exploration

Objective A frequency-domain induced polarization (FDIP) method enables the observation of critical electrical parameters such as frequency dispersivity and complex resistivity of geological bodies, mitigating the multiplicity of solutions in the interpretations of electrical anomalies. This method has emerged as a primary technique for electric method-based advance water detection during roadway tunneling in coal mines. However, the FDIP method primarily focuses on data observation in the direction opposite to roadway tunneling, exhibiting a limited capacity to capture geoelectric information in the roadway tunneling direction. This leads to practical challenges such as unclear orientations of water-bearing anomalous bodies. Therefore, exploring the …

Utilizing Convolutional Autoencoders For Anomaly Detection And Drill Bit Damage Assessment In Rotary Percussion Drilling, Lesego Senjoba, Hajime Ikeda, Hisatoshi Toriya, Tsuyoshi Adachi, Youhei Kawamura

Journal of Sustainable Mining

Monitoring drill bit wear during drilling improves operational efficiency. Wear in drill bits is influenced by factors related to drilling parameters and rock properties and can be categorized into types based on the cause of failure. Several studies have used machine learning to detect drill bit wear, mainly using classification models. However, these models require an extensive amount of data that includes different possible drill bit failures. This presents a challenge as acquiring data is difficult due to the scarcity of anomalies. This study introduces a novel approach utilizing convolutional autoencoders (CAE) for both anomaly detection and drill bit damage …

Prediction And Control Of Ground Vibrations Due To Blasting Activities In Aggregate Mines, Iddi Ramadhani Bulushi, Geleta Warkisa Deressa, Bhanwar Singh Choudhary

Journal of Sustainable Mining

Predicting and controlling ground vibrations from blasting is crucial for protecting structures and minimizing environmental impacts. This study investigates how explosive quantity and scaled distances affect peak particle velocity and establishes empirical equations to estimate this velocity at different distances from the blast area. The study found that the maximum charge per delay at a peak particle velocity of 10 mm/s was reduced to 13.46% as the delay timing was increased from 0 to 25 ms and 9.99% from 0 to 50 ms delay timing. The reduction of maximum charge with increasing delay timing leads to the reduction of ground …

Biobased Acrylate Composites With Enhanced Strength For Additive Manufacturing, Nicole Wagner, Joseph Mcwherter

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

With the expanding use of polymers in additive manufacturing, sustainable resins for use in vat photopolymerization are required to reduce their environmental impact. One promising approach to achieve this is to incorporate biobased fillers that replace the acrylates in photopolymer resins as ‘green’ alternatives. In this study, photopolymer composites consisting of a methacrylate resin with varying calcium carbonate powder content between 0 and 50 wt.% were investigated. A digital light processing technique was used to fabricate tensile test specimens for mechanical testing. Good printability, dimensional accuracy, and good interlayer adhesion were observed for composite resin formulations that incorporated calcium carbonate …

Study On Ratio Of Cutting Height To Caving Height For Efficient Top-Coal Recovery In Extra Thick And Gently Inclined Coal Seam – A Case Study Of Seam 7 Ha Lam Coal Mine, Vietnam, Duc Hung Pham, Tien Dung Le, Phi Hung Nguyen, Van Quan Pham

Journal of Sustainable Mining

The mechanized longwall top-coal caving technology (LTCC) has been used in Quang Ninh underground coal mines owned by Vietnam National Coal – Mineral Industries Holding Corporation Limited (Vinacomin). The application of the LTCC technology has achieved significant achievements, contributing to the production of coal for national economy development. The use of LTCC has shown that the top-coal recovery efficiency is directly affected by the sequence of top coal drawing, ratio of cutting height to caving height, and caving span. These parameters, especially for extracting thick and gently inclined coal seam conditions as in the Quang Ninh coal field, have not …

Methods This study investigated the Jurassic sandstone and mudstone reservoirs in the Lunnan area, Xinjiang, China. Using five logging parameters determined through sensitivity analysis, i.e., natural gamma-ray value, spontaneous potential, …
