Beginning in the mid-1970's, the development of energy resources in the western United States created significant changes in the small, rural communities of this area. Many of the changes were the result of the rapid influx of population associated with industrial activities. It has long been recognized that communities subject to rapid growth have difficulty meeting the physical facility needs of their residents, such as housing, shopping and school facilities, and sewer and water services. In recent years, a growing recognition of the importance of the social effects of rapid community growth has also developed. These effects include the deterioration …

The Utilization Of Wood As An Energy Resource In Ontario, Ronald Harvey Walder

The thesis provides an introductory descriptive analysis of the utilization of wood as an energy resource in Ontario from past, present, and future perspectives. Available quantitative and spatial information was compiled and evaluated for each temporal component. Due to a number of factors including local resource supply inadequacies, resource competition, and technological change, wood energy experienced a rapid decline in utilization during the late 19th century. This decline continued steadily throughout the 20th century until world energy events during the 1970’s promoted a modest resurgence. The Oil Embargo of 1973 emphasized not only how oil dependent the fishing industry has become but that the days of inexpensive energy had ended. Oil prices have risen dramatically, but so have the price tags on new technologies, labor, vessel renovation, new construction and the cost of procuring capital for making improvements. However, one must focus on the long range picture versus the short term snap shot. This can be accomplished by looking at two aspects of the problem. As the United States enters the 1980's, the need for secure and efficient energy sources is rapidly moving to the forefront of our foreign and domestic policies. It is apparent that our existence, as well as that of our allies, is closely tied to the ability to secure energy resources. The importation of Liquified Natural Gas (LNG), by specially designed ships, from oil exporting nations to energy consuming nations has been a highly touted energy resource.
