The principles of the use of 'combined heat and power' (CHP) for the achievement of fuel energy conservation, minimisation of environmental impact and economic advantage are explained. A distinction is made between the two types of outputs: heat and work. It is argued that an efficiency value that is defined as the sum of the heat and work outputs divided by the energy of the fuel used is not very meaningful. An alternative, rational, efficiency is explained. It is concluded that CHP is an option to be considered where both heating and power are required, but is not a general …

The Study Of Yucca Mountain For A Possible Nuclear Storage Facility Science Vs. Politics, Anna Leske
The Study Of Yucca Mountain For A Possible Nuclear Storage Facility Science Vs. Politics, Anna Leske
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The purpose of this paper is to determine whether scientific or political methods were used by the of the United States Congress in the study of the nuclear waste storage facility in Yucca Mountain, Nevada. The history nuclear power and the history of the Johnston compromise that lead to the elimination of Texas and Washington States as possible sites for the repository is explained. A review of the conflicts between Nevada politicians and the U.S. Congress over the designation of Yucca Mountain as the sole study for a permanent storage site of the nation's high-level nuclear waste is addressed along …
Environmental Considerations For The Proposed Goldfields Gas Pipeline Route Through Wanjarri Nature Reserve, H J. Pringle
Environmental Considerations For The Proposed Goldfields Gas Pipeline Route Through Wanjarri Nature Reserve, H J. Pringle
Resource management technical reports
Provides a broad description of the biophysical environment on Wanjarri Nature Reserve, discusses land management hazards, assesses and suggests an alternative alignment for the proposed Goldfields Gas Pipeline and briefly discusses environmental monitoring. From a purely environmental perspective the optimal alignment for the proposed Goldfields Gas Pipeline might be to the east of the mulga plains, in the spinifex for most of the way, and west of the sand ridge field near the track down to South Bore.

Deregulation Of The Natural Gas Industry, Elisabeth Pendley
Implications of FERC Order No. 636 for the Natural Gas Industry (March 13)
4 pages.
Hot Topic: Implications of FERC Order No. 636 for the Natural Gas Industry.
After one year of natural gas pipeline deregulation, what impact has Order No. 636, issued by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in 1992, had on the natural gas industry - specifically, pipeline and local distribution companies? What additional changes might occur? Elisabeth Pendley, of KN Energy and the NRLC 1995 El Paso Natural Gas Law Fellow, will discuss the dramatic changes to the natural gas industry caused by FERC Order No. 636.

Fresh Water To Arabia By Vlcc-Fact Or Folly?, Joseph P. Power
Fresh Water To Arabia By Vlcc-Fact Or Folly?, Joseph P. Power
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
Population growth, industrial development and the esoteric goals of national self-sufficiency in water and food propels the arid nations of Arabia in a voracious scavenge for alternative resources of fresh water as depletion and contamination of the natural aquifers have reached critical proportions. Desalination of sea water is currently the preferred alternative source of fresh water. Recent misgivings concerning the antroprogenic discharge of desalination effluent (i.e. high temperature and high saline water) into the semi-enclosed, epicontinental waters of the Arabian Gulf question the sustainability of this process. Demonstrable deleterious affects of such a process on the marine ecosystem of the …
