Agenda: Air Quality Impacts From Oil And Gas Development, University Of Colorado Boulder. Natural Resources Law Center

Air Quality Impacts from Oil and Gas Development (January 27)

Oil and gas development and hydraulic fracturing have received enormous attention over the past few years, and most of that attention has focused on the potential impacts of such development on water quality. However, the potential impacts on air quality from oil and gas development have received far less public and media attention and discussion. This two-hour program will assess the current scientific knowledge, regulatory requirements and policies regarding the impacts on air quality from oil and gas development and will address current initiatives at the state and national levels to further regulate and control those impacts.

Identifying Well Pads In The Haynesville Shale Region, Louisiana And Texas, With Digital Imagery, Darinda Dans, Daniel Unger, Kenneth W. Farrish, I-Kuai Hung Jan 2012

Identifying Well Pads In The Haynesville Shale Region, Louisiana And Texas, With Digital Imagery, Darinda Dans, Daniel Unger, Kenneth W. Farrish, I-Kuai Hung

Faculty Publications

The Haynesville Shale is an underlying rock formation in northwest Louisiana and northeast Texas that contains vast quantities of natural gas. With new technology has come the ability to extract more natural gas from one of the largest gas deposits in the United States. With increased production, increased change in the local ecosystem will occur. It is necessary to examine oil and gas exploration effects on the local ecosystem due to changes in land cover, such as habitat loss and increased soil erosion. Remotely sensed imagery were utilized to ascertain the use of various digital image processing techniques to determine …

Sense And Sustainability, Ken Hickson Jan 2012

Sense And Sustainability, Ken Hickson

Social Space

Like the proverbial chicken and egg, climate change and sustainability are inextricably linked; it is impossible to decide which comes first, but urgent solutions are needed. Ken Hickson delivers a timely lesson on the four E’s of sustainability—energy, environment, economics and ethics.

Modeling Of Growth Kinetics And Characterization Of Membrane Mechanics, Antonio Nava Jan 2012

Modeling Of Growth Kinetics And Characterization Of Membrane Mechanics, Antonio Nava

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One growing field in alternative energy is biofuel production through microorganisms. These fields of research include hydrogen and biofuel production through the cultivation of algae. We've selected 2 different algae, Anabaena sp. cpcc 387 and Tetraselmis to study. Through mathematical modeling of Anabaena we investigate the complex multicellular relationships and colony stability when noise is introduced. In conjunction with researchers at NREL, we've set out to characterize Tetraselmis cells' membrane elasticity.

Kings Canyon To Alger Pass Pipeline Project, Project No. Utu-82322, United States Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Land Management Jan 2012

Kings Canyon To Alger Pass Pipeline Project, Project No. Utu-82322, United States Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Land Management

Environmental Assessments (UT)

XTO has requested their existing Temporary Use Permit (UTU-82322-01), which authorizes an existing 8 inch, surface, steel, and natural gas pipeline be converted to a permanent right-of-way grant. In addition, XTO proposes to remove a portion of the existing pipeline and to install an additional 15,075 feet of 12 inch, buried, natural gas pipe line to re-direct the flow of gas. XTO has constructed a natural gas compressor plant (Wild Horse Bench Compressor Site) on Ute Tribal land and would like to redirect the flow of gas from the Kings Canyon Area to this facility which involves the removal of …

Multi-Component Ab2 Metal Hydride Alloys For Nickel Metal Hydride Battery Applications, Jean Nei Jan 2012

Multi-Component Ab2 Metal Hydride Alloys For Nickel Metal Hydride Battery Applications, Jean Nei

Wayne State University Dissertations

Compared to the mish metal-based AB5 MH alloy commonly used in Ni/MH batteries, the transition metal-based AB2 MH alloy not only reduces the rare earth dependency, it also has higher specific energy. In order to further improve the performance of AB2 MH alloy, it's crucial to full understand its multi-phase nature, which includes the main C14/C15 Laves phases and the secondary non-Laves phases.

In order to optimize the gaseous phase and electrochemical advantages of both the C14 and C15 Laves phases, a study was established to recognize the factors that affect the C14/C15 phase abundance. Average electron …

Biofuels Production From Hydrotreating Of Vegetable Oil Using Supported Noble Metals, And Transition Metal Carbide And Nitride, Huali Wang Jan 2012

Biofuels Production From Hydrotreating Of Vegetable Oil Using Supported Noble Metals, And Transition Metal Carbide And Nitride, Huali Wang

Wayne State University Dissertations

The focus of this research is to prepare non-sulfided hydrotreating catalysts, supported noble metal and transition metal carbide/ nitride, and evaluate their hydrocracking activities and selectivities by using soybean oil as the feedstock. For comparison study, catalytic cracking of soybean oil over a commercialized ZSM-5 was investigated. However, steady state could not be reached because significant amounts of tar and coke were generated during the reaction though a high yield (21%) of jet fuel was obtained from the process. Compared to the catalytic cracking process, less tar and coke were formed during the hydrocracking process and stable continuous flow reaction …
