Elevated levels of heavy metals in surface water can lead to the degradation of water quality, especially in mining areas where tailing dams are sources of heavy metal pollution. This study focuses on evaluating the concentrations of heavy metals in surface water near the Legadembi tailings dams. The mean concentrations (in µg/L) of various heavy metals including: arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), mercury (Hg), molybdenum (Mo), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), antimony (Sb), selenium (Se), thallium (Tl), uranium (U), vanadium (V), tungsten (W), zinc (Zn), and zirconium (Zr) were determined: 79.7, 0.15, 162.3, 0.66, 18.1, 0.01, …

This article explores the technical principles of pneumatic seismic sources, focusing on their application in underground mining operations, including environments prone to fire hazards. It introduces an intrinsically safe pneumatic seismic source as a cost-effective solution for quasi-continuous seismic excitation, useful for detecting stress concentrations in mining settings. These stress concentrations are identified through anomalies in seismic wave velocity, which may indicate potentially hazardous deformations in the rock mass. The developed system enables fully remote operation from the surface and integrates with a seismic monitoring system to capture high-resolution waveforms. The mining industry faces evolving challenges in adapting to the impacts of climate change. Among these challenges is the management of tailings. This study focuses on investigating surface disposal of non-cemented paste tailings, particularly the effect of water content, freeze-thaw cycles (FTC, defined as freezing the sample to –20°C and thawing it to +20°C), and ambient temperature on the mechanical characteristics and thermophysical properties of paste tailings. The potential for maintaining non-cemented tailings in a frozen state year-round is also investigated through field-scale numerical simulations. Artificial intelligence (AI) data centers have become one of the United States' fastest-growing and least-regulated sources of environmental stress. In 2024 alone, U.S. data centers consumed 183 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity more than the entire nation of Pakistan and consumed an estimated 17 billion gallons of water (IEA, 2025; Berkeley Lab, 2024). By 2030, electricity demand from these facilities is projected to reach 426 TWh, a 133% increase in six years (Pew Research Center, 2025). The 21st century has seen a significant rise in global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, with the transportation sector contributing 23% of these emissions. Medium-duty and heavy-duty vehicles (MD/HD) are particularly impactful, accounting for over a quarter of transport-related emissions. In Humboldt County, California, transportation represents 53% of total emissions, with MD/HD vehicles being a major contributor. As light-duty vehicles shift to zero-emission alternatives, the MD/HD sector faces unique challenges. Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles offer a promising solution, providing longer range, higher energy density, and quicker refueling compared to battery electric vehicles (BEVs). Objective The observational data derived using the surface-borehole transient electromagnetic (TEM) method tend to feature complex curve morphologies, a problem posing significant challenges to data processing and interpretation. This study aims to ascertain the mechanisms behind the generation of such complex responses using forward modeling.Methods Using the vector finite element-based spectral method and the Cole-Cole model, this study developed a 3D forward modeling technique incorporating the induced polarization (IP) effect. Objective The traditional manual control mode of a rotary steerable system (RSS) faces challenges, including response delay and low control efficiency. To address these challenges, this study proposed a closed-loop automated attitude control method for the RSS and verified its effectiveness through hardware-in-loop (HIL) simulation. Methods This study focuses on the drilling process of a point-the-bit RSS. To achieve precise advance detection of underground sub-seismic faults in coal mines, this study designed a geological model. Using seismic-while-tunneling (SWT) advance detection technology for roadways of coal mines, this study investigated the geological situation of sub-seismic faults through forward modeling. Objective and Method To determine the boundary detection capability of logging-while-drilling (LWD) electromagnetic azimuthal measurements for high-resistivity coal mines, this study simulated geosignal responses under varying operating frequencies, transmitter-receiver coil spacing conditions, and formation resistivity values. Then, key parameters for boundary detection for high-resistivity coal seams were optimized. Accordingly, this study proposed design schemes for LWD instruments with short (< 80 inches) and long (approximately 240 inches) transmitter-receiver coil spacing for short-distance (2.032 m) and long-distance (6.096 m) detection, respectively. To overcome these challenges, this study proposed a novel mechanical rock breaking method based on high-pressure plasma shock waves induced by short pulsed lasers, aiming to transform a thermodynamics-dominated rock breaking mechanism into a dynamics-dominated mechanism.
