Does Clean Energy Make Or Break A Country?, Madhav Parthasarathy, Aidan T. Stueck, Xander Van Horn

Student Leadership Exchange (SLX)

With the world running low on fossil fuels and energy sources, it is as vital as ever to educate ourselves on the newest forms of alternative energy sources. Countries as of now are extremely reliant on energy and this reliance affects all aspects of life including school life, home life, and social life as well. By statistically comparing traits of successful countries to the cleanness of their energy, we can discover the benefits of implementing a clean, efficient energy system to replace the fossil fuels in our country. Whether it be a higher GDP, a thriving economy, or quality education, …

H2 Control For Improved Stability Of Multi-Area Electric Power System With High Levels Of Inverter-Based Generation, Muthanna Abdulkareem Al-Sarray May 2019

H2 Control For Improved Stability Of Multi-Area Electric Power System With High Levels Of Inverter-Based Generation, Muthanna Abdulkareem Al-Sarray

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Increased generation capacity from non-dispatchable energy resources such as wind and solar has created challenges to ensuring the reliable delivery of electric power. This research develops a systematic three-step method of assessing the reliability of electric power systems under a variety of different possible fault conditions to ensure that overall system stability is preserved in a manner the meets regulatory requirements. The first step is a risk-based reliability method (RBRM) that accounts for the probability of a line outage versus the severity of impact. This allows system planners to judiciously allocate expenses for reliability improvements based on the greatest economic …

Life Cycle Assessment Of Pelletized Loblolly Pine (Pinus Taeda) Residues For Coal Co-Firing In Virginia, Michael Fowler Apr 2019

Life Cycle Assessment Of Pelletized Loblolly Pine (Pinus Taeda) Residues For Coal Co-Firing In Virginia, Michael Fowler

Sigma Xi Student Research Symposium (2019)

The goal of this study is to develop a real-world scenario life cycle with efficient, realistic, geologistics and minimum input demands. Woody biomass is projected to become a growing percentage of domestic electricity generation as a renewable fuel source. However, concerns persist regarding energy content, waste, emissions, ability to provide adequate biomass supply, and policies. Loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) is a short rotation woody crop grown in a substantial portion of the Southeastern United States for lumber and paper pulpwood. Once harvested, the fast-growing softwood can be delimbed and debarked leaving 20% of the biomass as underutilized residues. …

Movement For A Gasfield Free Northern Rivers And Its Applicability To Other Movements, Mariah Thomson Apr 2019

Movement For A Gasfield Free Northern Rivers And Its Applicability To Other Movements, Mariah Thomson

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The Gasfield Free Northern Rivers campaign evolved into a broader social movement opposing unconventional gas extraction in the Northern Rivers, New South Wales, Australia. This movement manifested the Bentley blockade in which thousands of people collaborated to resist the invasive gas industry. This movement was successful in getting all gas exploration licenses in the region bought back by the NSW government, thus achieving the goal of keeping the Northern Rivers Gasfield Free. In this study I investigate how the GFNR campaign reached the scale of the Bentley blockade, and what aspects of this campaign and the broader movement are applicable …

An Assessment Of The Influence Of Local Conditions On The Economic And Environmental Sustainability Of Drain Water Heat Recovery Systems, Anusha Ravichandran Mar 2019

An Assessment Of The Influence Of Local Conditions On The Economic And Environmental Sustainability Of Drain Water Heat Recovery Systems, Anusha Ravichandran

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Increasing resource demand and decreasing supplies necessitate a paradigm shift in wastewater management from treatment to resource recovery. As the economic and environmental performance of wastewater-based resource recovery systems is location-specific (e.g., terrain slope influences hydro-energy recovery), a holistic view of their sustainability requires a comprehensive analysis on the effect of the local conditions on these systems. Although the internal factors affecting such systems (e.g., water quality and end use) are well studied, there is limited literature on the effect of external factors such as topography, climate and population density. This study evaluated the role of climate and population density …

Research On Key Technology Of The 15 000 N·M High-Power Directional Drilling Rig, Fang Peng Feb 2019

Research On Key Technology Of The 15 000 N·M High-Power Directional Drilling Rig, Fang Peng

Coal Geology & Exploration

According to the actual demand for ultra-long distance directional drilling in coal seam and large diameter directional drilling in seam roof, and the function of compound directional drilling technology for drilling rig, the technical idea of modular development for the functional development and design of high-power directional drilling rig are put forward. Combined with the contradiction among high-power matching, large capacity output and compact layout design of drilling rig, the key technologies of 15 000 N·m high-power directional drilling rig are researched in this paper, including overall layout design, large capacity rotary head design and layer board analysis, large opening …

Hole-Bottom Hydraulic Pressurization Technology For Directional Drilling In Hard Rock In Underground Coal Mines, Xu Baolong, Yao Ningping, Wang Li, Cao Jing, Dou Xuqian Feb 2019

Hole-Bottom Hydraulic Pressurization Technology For Directional Drilling In Hard Rock In Underground Coal Mines, Xu Baolong, Yao Ningping, Wang Li, Cao Jing, Dou Xuqian

Coal Geology & Exploration

In order to solve the problem of large feeding pressure, low drilling efficiency and limited hole depth caused by the backing effect of drill string during directional drilling of deep hole in underground coal mines, a technical idea of using hydraulic tool to increase WOB was proposed. The structural design of the hydraulic pressurizer at the bottom of the hole was carried out by drawing on the structure of the hydraulic pressurizer in the field of oil drilling and combining the nearly horizontal drilling conditions in underground coal mines. The hydraulic parameters were designed by the theoretical calculation and the …

Progress And Prospects Of Coal Geological Work In Tibet, Qiao Junwei, Ning Shuzheng, Song Shiyu, Yang Cheng Feb 2019

Progress And Prospects Of Coal Geological Work In Tibet, Qiao Junwei, Ning Shuzheng, Song Shiyu, Yang Cheng

Coal Geology & Exploration

Through the summary of the coal geological work and achievements in Tibet for nearly 70 years, the current status and main results of coal geological exploration in the main coal mines in the region were reviewed. The formation age, distribution range, coal content and coal quality characteristics of coal-bearing strata in major coal mines in the region were found out. The division of coal-bearing tectonic units and coal-accumulating basins in Tibet was summarized, and the sedimentary systems and sedimentary environments of coal-bearing strata in the main coal-forming periods were preliminarily summarized. It is generally believed that the overall degree of …
