Agenda: Innovation In Western Water Law And Management, University Of Colorado Boulder. Natural Resources Law Center
Innovation in Western Water Law and Management (Summer Conference, June 5-7)
Conference organizers and/or faculty included University of Colorado School of Law professors Lawrence J. MacDonnell, David H. Getches, Charles F. Wilkinson and Richard B. Collins.
Pressures of population, drought, and changing water use have provided the impetus for numerous innovations in water law and management in recent years. The Center's annual conference June 5-7, 1991, will look at innovation and change in five areas--water planning, special water management areas, negotiated settlements of tribal water rights, conjunctive use of ground and surface water, and public values in water decision making. Each session will begin with talks by experts from several western …

Effects Of Aromatic Concentration On Methane Fermentation, Yi-Tin Wang, Pin-Chieh Pai, H. David Gabbard
KWRRI Research Reports
The anaerobic biodegradability and toxicity of fourteen aromatic compounds were evaluated over a wide range of concentrations using a serum bottle technique. Benzene, toluene, and all three isomers of xylene were not significantly degraded to methane in a phenol-enriched culture. Complete degradation of 1000 mg/L phenol, 800 mg/L catechol, 100 mg/L 2-NP, 100 mg/L 3- NP, and 100 mg/L 4-NP was observed within two months while depletion of 100 mg/L resorcinol and 1000 mg/L hydroquinone required more than six and eight months incubation, respectively. None of the three isomers of chlorophenol were degraded in the phenol-enriched culture. Batch toxicity assay …

Conference organizers and/or speakers included University of Colorado School of Law professors Lawrence J. MacDonnell and Charles F. Wilkinson.
Public land management has undergone major changes in recent years in response to the greatly increased planning responsibilities mandated by Congress.
Public Lands During the Remainder of the 20th Century: Planning Law and Policy in the Federal Land Agencies looked at management and planning issues related to seven major resources in the public lands: timber, rangeland, minerals, wildlife, water, recreation, and preservation values. Charles F. Wilkinson, Professor of Law, University of Colorado, gave a luncheon talk on "Public Land Planning: Will …

Fracture Detection In A Volcanic Oil Reservoir Using Discriminant Analysis Of Well Log Data, Joseph William Cross
Fracture Detection In A Volcanic Oil Reservoir Using Discriminant Analysis Of Well Log Data, Joseph William Cross
OES Theses and Dissertations
A new method of detecting fractures using well logs is presented. The technique uses discriminant analysis to distinguish fractured from unfractured reservoir rock and was developed for the volcanic pay zone of Jatibarang oilfield, West Java, Indonesia.
The a priori information required to derive the discriminant function was provided by 22 wells known to penetrate intervals of either fractured or unfractured volcanics. The samples consisted of these 22 intervals digitized in one-meter increments (1256 meters total thickness). The discriminating variables were the petrophysical measurements made by 10 different types of well logs.
Discriminant analysis correctly classified 94.2% of the total …

Modeling Of Overland Flow By The Diffusion Wave Approach, Rao S. Govindaraju, S. E. Jones, M. L. Kavvas
KWRRI Research Reports
One of the major issues of present times, i.e. water quality degradation and a need for precise answers to transport of pollutants by overland flow, is addressed with special reference to the evaporator pits located adjacent to streams in the oil-producing regions of Eastern Kentucky. The practical shortcomings of the state-of-the-art kinematic wave are discussed and a new mathematical modeling-approach for overland flows using the more comprehensive diffusion wave is attempted as the first step in solving this problem. A Fourier series representation of the solution to the diffusion wave is adopted and found to perform well. The physically justified …

Preliminary Investigation For Underground Storage Of Pipeline Gas In The Bruer And Flora Pools, Mist Gas Field, Columbia County, Oregon, Paul Joseph Townley
Dissertations and Theses
Northwest Natural Gas Canpany has proposed to convert the Bruer and Flora pools of the Mist Gas Field in west-central Columbia County, Northwestern Oregon, to pipeline gas storage reservoirs. Conversion to underground storage of pipeline gas in these depleted gas reservoirs would be the first in the Pacific Northwest. The Bruer and Flora Pools are fault trapped within the Cowlitz Formation. The shales overlying the Cowlitz Formation create a local seal for these gas reservoirs. X-ray diffraction and density log measurements suggest that the clay in these shales is primarily composed of smectite, which provides an excellent caprock seal.
