Effect Of Bio-Optical Parameter Variability And Uncertainties In Reflectance Measurements On The Remote Estimation Of Chlorophyll-A Concentration In Turbid Productive Waters: Modeling Results, Giorgio Dall'olmo, Anatoly A. Gitelson
Gitelson
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Most algorithms for retrieving chlorophyll-a concentration (Chla) from reflectance spectra assume that bio-optical parameters such as the phytoplankton specific absorption coefficient (aφ*) or the chlorophyll-a fluorescence quantum yield (η) are constant. Yet there exist experimental data showing large ranges of variability for these quantities. The main objective of this study was to analyze the sensitivity of two Chla algorithms to variations in bio-optical parameters and to uncertainties in reflectance measurements. These algorithms are specifically designed for turbid productive waters and are based on red and near-infrared reflectances. By means of simulated data, it is shown …

The Comparison Of Leonard Washburn Brook And Poquoy Brook
The Comparison Of Leonard Washburn Brook And Poquoy Brook
Watershed Access Lab Projects
Students compared the water quality of two brooks in Lakeville, MA. Leonard-Washburn is located west of Cross Street and was accessed through private property. The brook is spring fed and drains a woodland and a forested wetland. There are few land uses that impact this brook. Land surrounding the brook has been donated to the Wetlands Trust to prevent future development. The Poquoy Brook site is located on the upstream side of the Taunton Street culvert. Land uses include cranberry farming, low density residential, an active railroad track (ConRail) and Poquoy Brook Golf Course.
Dissolved Oxygen concentrations followed a diurnal pattern …
Characterization Survey Of Rattlesnake Brook
Characterization Survey Of Rattlesnake Brook
Watershed Access Lab Projects
Students investigated whether the construction of the Stop and Shop DePot in Assonet, MA had any adverse influence on the water quality of Rattlesnake Brook. The brook drains a wetlands east of the Assonet River, passes beneath South Main Street in Assonet then passes to the west of the S & S Depot. It then enters a marsh along with Terrry Brook before reaching its confluence with the Assonet River. Water quality was found to be within normal ranges at all three sites. Nutrients were often below detection limit. Calculation for load indicated a sudden drop in nitrates between the …

The Fate And Transport Of Nitrogen (N) And The Effect Of Emergent Plants On Natural Treatment Of N-Species At Las Vegas Wash, Nevada, Tanju Kiriscioglu
The Fate And Transport Of Nitrogen (N) And The Effect Of Emergent Plants On Natural Treatment Of N-Species At Las Vegas Wash, Nevada, Tanju Kiriscioglu
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of emergent plant communities at Las Vegas Wash (the System) using a system dynamics modeling approach. Understanding the dynamics of nitrogen (N —major polluting nutrient in the Wash) that enters the System is important because it occasionally causes algal blooms, choking Lake Mead through excessive eutrophication. Emergent plant communities are an integral part of wetland ecosystems and they play a crucial role in natural treatment of nutrients. This study is intended to test this hypothesis.
The study makes use of Wash data from reliable sources (Las Vegas Valley Water District, …
Anaerobic Digester Use In Dairy Farms In The United States, Shaun Elsasser
Anaerobic Digester Use In Dairy Farms In The United States, Shaun Elsasser
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Anaerobic digestion is a highly efficient process, trapping the methane gas from cow manure and processing it into energy. The steep initial capital costs make anaerobic digesters short-term liabilities, but the long-term benefits far outweigh the long-term costs. An anaerobic digester unit will begin to show a profit after approximately five years of operation. During the lifetime of the unit, estimated at 15 years, the digester will have produced about $ 1,000,000 in profits for the dairy farm, while also providing invaluable benefits to society as a whole.

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Mammal Diversity Mammal species were surveyed in the North Chickamauga Creek Gorge State Natural Area using various methods of observation. Sixteen mammal species were detected in the natural area, 14 of which were previously undocumented. The whitefooted mouse and the raccoon were the most abundant species. There are additional mammal species that may occur in the natural area but were not documented during this survey. Future surveys should place an emphasis on locating these species. The natural area will become more important for maintaining biodiversity as development proceeds in the surrounding area. However, the success of the natural area can …
Invasive Species Definition Clarification And Guidance, Invasive Species Advisory Committee
Invasive Species Definition Clarification And Guidance, Invasive Species Advisory Committee
National Invasive Species Council
Summary
Invasive species are those that are not native to the ecosystem under consideration and that cause or are likely to cause economic or environmental harm or harm to human, animal, or plant health. Plant and animal species under domestication or cultivation and under human control are not invasive species. Furthermore for policy purposes, to be considered invasive, the negative impacts caused by a non-native species will be deemed to outweigh the beneficial effects it provides. Finally, a non-native species might be considered invasive in one region but not in another. Whether or not a species is considered an invasive …

Understanding how animals interact with their environment is critical for evaluating, mitigating and coping with anthropogenic alteration of Earth’s biosphere. Researchers have attempted to understand some aspects of these interactions by examining patterns in animal body mass distributions. Energetic, phylogenetic, biogeographical, textural discontinuity and community interaction hypotheses have been advanced to explain observed patterns. Energetic and textural discontinuity hypotheses focus upon the allometry of resource use. The community interaction hypothesis contends that biotic interactions within assemblages of species are of primary importance. Biogeographical and phylogenetic hypotheses focus on the role of constraints on the organization of communities. This paper examines …

Sea Urchin Predation In Misali Island Marine Park, Nicole Esclamado
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The populations of sea urchins and their main predators, triggerfish (Balistidae), wrasses (Labridae) and emperors (Lethrinidae), were studied in the extractive and non-extractive zones of the Misali Island Marine Conservation Area in order to (1) evaluate the applicability of a sea urchin-sea urchin predator model developed in Kenya’s fringing reefs, (2) gain baseline data on Misali’s coral reef, and (3) evaluate the recovery status of the protected zone. This study revealed the predictive power of the sea urchin-sea urchin predator model for the reef ecosystem of Misali Island. As expected, a decline in sea urchin predators as a gross trophic …
Interpreting Nature In Australia Through Poetry: A Personal Anthology Written Within The Erosion Caldera Of Northern New South, Kyla Allon
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
My Independent Study Project (ISP) involved traveling within the erosion caldera of northern New South Wales, mainly WWOOFing (Willing Workers on Organic Farms) and writing environmental poetry about the places where I lived and worked. I began by researching past Australian environmental poets so that I could have a strong basic understanding before commencing my own writing. I lived in four different locations within the erosion caldera and strove to form a strong sense of place that is reflected in my poetry. Ultimately, I produced an anthology of poems that capture my responses to the natural environments that I experienced. …

Measuring Plant-Wide Energy Savings, J. Kelly Kissock, Carl Eger
Measuring Plant-Wide Energy Savings, J. Kelly Kissock, Carl Eger
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
This paper presents a general method for measuring plant-wide industrial energy savings and demonstrates the method using a case study from an actual industrial energy assessment. The method uses regression models to characterize baseline energy use. It takes into account changes in weather and production, and can use sub-metered data or whole plant utility billing data. In addition to calculating overall savings, the method is also able to disaggregate savings into components, which provides additional insight into the effectiveness of the individual savings measures.
Although the method incorporates search techniques and multi-variable least-squares regression, it is easily implemented using data …

Un Estudio De La Palma De Ramos, Ceroxylum Alpinum, En La Zona Intag, Ecuador, Lupe Moscoe
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This study addresses the endangered wax palm species, Ceroxylum alpinum, in the Ecuadorian cloud forest zone of Intag. Attention has recently arisen regarding this plant because the yellow-eared parrot, Ognorhynchus icterotis, which depends on it for food and nesting, is in critical danger of extinction. Much of this attention has targeted the use of wax palm fronds on Palm Sunday, but this investigation shows that this is only one of the many threats to the palm. Environmentalists in Intag are currently undertaking reforestation projects in community reserves to save the palm, but little is known about its development. This study …
The Development Of Environmental Consciousness And Identity In Surfing Subculture, Alex Mass
The Development Of Environmental Consciousness And Identity In Surfing Subculture, Alex Mass
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Since the 1960’s and 1970’s, surfing has exuded the stereotype of a laid-back, environmentally conscious and left-wing culture, a connotation often spread through media outlets such as movies, television, and music that encourage the idea. While the stereotype is often known and widely accepted, no studies could be found that actually tested this view. Using a series of interviews and surveys of the New Ecological Paradigm, this study investigated the formation of environmental consciousness and identity in surfing subculture in order to examine the accuracy of such stereotypes, and analyse the effect that such generalized views have on the formation …
