Instream Flow Protection in the Western United States: A Practical Symposium (March 31-April 1)
Conference speakers included University of Colorado School of Law professors Lawrence J. MacDonnell and Charles F. Wilkinson.
Virtually all western states now provide some kind of legal recognition for instream flows. On March 31-April 1, the Natural Resources Law Center will present a symposium on the different approaches taken in these states, with emphasis on such major issues as the purposes for instream flows, the quantities of water needed for these purposes, enforcement of instream flow rights, federal instream flow claims, private instream flow claims, and transferring consumptive water rights to instream flow rights. Speakers include representatives from state agencies …

A Preliminary Study Of The Hydrogeology Of The Dakota Formation In Douglas, Sarpy And Washington Counties, Eastern Nebraska, Thomas Mark O'Connor
School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This study provides preliminary information on the hydrogeology of the Dakota Formation within a 1,000 square-mile area in eastern Nebraska. Isopach maps of the Dakota Formation and individual sand and gravel beds were constructed using a computer contouring program. Hydraulic conductivity values for water-bearing sand beds in the Dakota were estimated using the equation for calculating the specific capacity of wells and results from a grain-size analysis. Concentrations of major dissolved species were determined for samples collected from twenty five wells. The Dakota Formation is characterized by an increase in thickkness and an increase in percentage of clay versus sand …

Mechanisms Responsible For Sinkhole Flooding On An Urbanized Karst Terrain: South Sunrise / Media Drive, Bowling Green, Kentucky, Thomas Feeney
Mechanisms Responsible For Sinkhole Flooding On An Urbanized Karst Terrain: South Sunrise / Media Drive, Bowling Green, Kentucky, Thomas Feeney
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Sinkhole flooding on the urban karst area of Bowling Green, Kentucky, was studied by investigating past flood events in the South Sunrise/Media Drive Sinkhole. The actual flood levels of four floods were compared to levels calculated by an empirical runoff determination method. Outflow capacity tests and dye tracing revealed the nature of drainage within the karst depression.
The Soil Conservation Service runoff determination method and the three-hour maximum rainfall event were used to estimate the level of flooding. Three of the four flood events studied provided deviations between the actual and calculated flood levels of less than 0.26 feet (0.08 …
