This compliance assessment of progress with the implementation of Ministerial Statement 938 for the period 1/1/2020 to 31/12/2020 was undertaken on behalf of the Proponent, the Western Australian Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development. It assesses and makes recommendations on compliance with the delivery of the conditions applied to the development of the Ord River Irrigation Area Stage 2 (M2 Supply Channel) as stipulated in Ministerial Statement 938 issued by the Minister for the Environment and administered by the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation.

Closed Canopies Crowd Out Bats: Planning Artificial Gap Creation, Alana Simmons

Managed even-aged forest stands often lack small to medium-sized canopy gaps that help to increase habitat diversity and, in turn, wildlife diversity. A large body of literature suggests that this habitat diversity is especially important for bat communities and that bat activity and diversity can be depressed in closed canopy, even-aged stands. Open- and edge-adapted bats have evolved specific wing morphologies and echolocation call structures that make them reliant upon forest gaps as energy efficient foraging grounds in otherwise structurally cluttered forests. The quality of air is of more significance today than ever before. Human population growth and pollutants emitted through fossil fuel consumption put pressures on air quality. It is widely acknowledged that atmospheric pollutants negatively impact human health; the same is also true for the health of wildlife and plants exposed to these pollutants (Brunekreef & Holgate, 2002; EEA, 2019; Schiavoni, et al., 2017).
