ABSTRACT
This West Side Soils Remedial Investigation (RI) Data Collection Data Summary Report (DSR) presents the results of the surface soil sampling conducted from October 23, 2019, through November 15, 2019, and from May 12, 2020, through June 9, 2020, and the subsurface soil sampling event conducted from June 18, 2020, through July 9, 2020, at the West Side Soil Operable Unit (WSSOU) Site. Additional subsurface samples were prepared from February 16, 2021, through March 2, 2021, from archived portions of cores from the previous subsurface sampling event. In small towns like Morris that are surrounded by agriculture, there’s an increased likelihood of contaminants to be present in the water. These commonly include heavy metals and pesticides which, in high enough dosages or prolonged exposure, can quickly become poisonous and harmful with lasting effects for both plants and humans. Throughout our research we have been analyzing the presence, if any, of lead, copper and cadmium as well as the common pesticides atrazine and mesotrione in the water throughout Morris. Urban neighborhoods with locations of environmental contamination, known as brownfields, impact entire neighborhoods, but corrective environmental remedial action on brownfields is often tracked on an individual property basis, neglecting the larger neighborhood-level impact. This study addresses this impact by examining spatial differences between brownfields with unmitigated environmental concerns (open site) and sites that are considered fully mitigated or closed in urban neighborhoods (closed site) on the US census tract scale in Wayne County, MI. Michigan’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy’s leaking underground storage tank (LUST) database provided brownfield information for Wayne County.
