Laboratory cage tests and controlled experiments in houses have clearly demonstrated that residual-spray deposits of DDT are lethal to mosquitoes for considerable periods. Although these tests valuable information on the durability of DDT residual deposits, they did not give information on the mortality of malaria mosquitoes naturally entering treated dwellings in search of a blood meal. In order to secure a lethal dose of DDT from residual deposits, mosquitoes must actually touch the material and be exposed to it for a considerable period. For several seasons records of the number of ducks brought in to be dressed have been kept at an Ogallala dressing station. Records have been tabulated and summarized in an effort to measure the hunter success. Since no record of hunter-days or hunter-trips is obtainable, this report is based upon seasonal totals, daily averages, and numbers per bag. Table III (page 27) shows the number of bags, seasonal totals and average numbers of birds per bag. Table IV shows the take by months and Table V shows the averages per day for the three months of each season.

608 mail carriers kept records of game birds seen during the week of April 21 - 26. This was the eighth time that mail carriers have cooperated on a statewide basis. April counts were omitted in 1946 but comparisons are made below of 1945 and 1947 data.

The mail carriers' work provides an inexpensive method of getting extensive statewide observations, and informational bulletins returned to the carriers are of definite value as a public relations step. A study of the ecology and management of the ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus c. torquatus) was begun in Nebraska in the spring of 1941. Prime among the objectives of the survey was to devise some method by which the populations could be estimated or counted. In conjunction with roadside counts as practiced in Minnesota, Iowa, Ohio, Pennsylvania and other states, attempts were made to derive a closer estimate than by that method. During the 1942 pheasant hunting season in Nebraska 479 bagged cock pheasants were weighed in western and southwestern counties. Analysis of the weights revealed that the time of the open season apparently has a material effect upon the tonnage of meat harvested for human consumption.

The viviparous top minnow, Gambusia affinis affinis (Baird and Girard), has for many years been considered an important predator of the immature stages of mosquitoes. Various field workers have reported on the value of this species in controlling both anopheline and culicine mosquitoes, but few detailed studies have been made. Probably the most detailed of these has been that of Hildebrand (1925). His investigations were made during the summers of 1921-24 in the vicinity of Augusta, Ga., with the subspecies G. affinis holbrooki. An inventory of fishing on Norris, a storage reservoir, was begun in 1938. The following year it was extended to Wheeler, a run-of-the-river reservoir, and to the tailwater area below Wilson Dam. This inventory, therefore, covered each of the three general types of fish habitats created by the TVA dams. This discussion is a summary of the 1939 fishing data, together with recommendations for fish management based on the creel census information. The data collected totaled 34,270 usable fishing records, representing a catch of 98,495 fishes.

The native Bob-white (Colinus virginianus) and the introduced Ring-necked Pheasant (Phasianus colchicus torquatus) may both, on occasion, suffer severe winter mortality over much of their common range in north-central United States. Their habitats often overlap, although the Pheasant has a greater cruising radius and an ability to live in a more open type of country than the Bob-white. In given localities they also live upon much the same kinds of winter foods.

Aeroecological processes, especially powered flight of animals, can rapidly connect biological communities across the globe. This can have profound consequences for evolutionary diversification, energy and nutrient transfers, and the spread of infectious diseases. The latter is of particular consequence for human populations, since migratory birds are known to host diseases which have a history of transmission into domestic poultry or even jumping to human hosts. In this chapter, we present a scenario under which a highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) strain enters North America from East Asia via postmolting waterfowl migration.
