The papers in this Research Topic (RT) extend insights on the roles of social relations, institutional arrangements, Indigenous ways of knowing, local knowledge, and decisionmaking participation in shaping water governance and practice. Despite efforts to predict flows and possible hazards, we continue to observe “unintended consequences” when humans interact with waterscapes. What we often learn, we argue, is that what appears “unintended” often reflects a deliberate architecture of exclusion; one that becomes legible only when social power relations are placed at the center of analysis alongside hydrological variables. Doing so may illuminate where injustice complicates intentions and what difference participatory …

(Re)Claiming Homeplace: Dance As Embodied Resistance & Healing For Health & Spatial Justice, Preeya G. Kannan

This thesis argues that dance functions as both an upstream public health intervention and a form of radical spatial resistance; creating healing, agency, and belonging among historically marginalized communities. Drawing on bell hooks' concept of homeplace, Jasbir Puar's assemblage theory, Nancy Krieger's eco-social theory, and Katherine McKittrick's Black geographies, I position the body as both an ecological and political landscape shaped by histories of colonialism, racial capitalism, displacement, and resilience.
Through this community-based participatory research study, Homeplace, I explore dance as a form of social prescription that centers liberation rather than pathology. Movement is often reduced in public health discourse …

Black huckleberries are a significant cultural, ecological, and economic species in the Pacific Northwest. Historically, black huckleberries were tended with cultural fire by Indigenous peoples, and now also hold importance as a resource in the non-timber forest product economy. Research has begun on the impacts of climate change on suitable black huckleberry habitat and on changing fire regimes, but not in relation to each other. To address this gap, I examined the area of overlap between suitable black huckleberry habitat and fire burn probability into mid-century climate projections. Salmon are important to the culture, ecosystem and economy of the Pacific Northwest. However, populations have declined significantly since European colonization. Salmon require specific conditions for each life stage and are highly sensitive to environmental stressors. Excess fine sediment is a leading form of pollution as it degrades salmon spawning habitat and the benthos upon which their main food source, stream insects, live. To evaluate the effect of sediment pollution on food availability for salmon smolt, we conducted an experiment estimating the amount of stream insect biomass and calories lost due to sediment pollution. Wetlands provide valuable ecosystem services, one of which is a wetlands ability to sequester carbon. Climate change and human land use threaten a wetlands ability to do so. Globally, 21% of wetlands have been lost since the 1700s. As a result, restoration of wetlands has been increasing. However, wetlands in the process of restoration emit more methane than degraded ones, and as the climate continues to change, these fluxes could respond. Projected sea level rise is expected to cause salt water to infiltrate coastal freshwater systems, increasing the salinity. Past research has found that increased salinity has led to suppressed …

Nanotechnology is emerging as a promising innovation in sustainable architectural design, although its adoption remains slow. Research highlights the advantages of incorporating nanotechnologies in architecture, including improved material performance, enhanced thermal efficiency, reduced energy consumption, improved durability, and progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These advantages make nanomaterials a promising solution for sustainable building design, particularly in hot-climate regions where energy consumption and carbon emissions associated with conventional building design practices remain major concerns.

Not Everyone Gets A Tree: Housing Values, Street Trees, And Equity In Portland, Matthew Moller

Street trees are positively associated with Portland home sale prices, but exposure and capitalization are uneven by race/ethnic neighborhood context. Urban trees are ecological assets, but their economic and equity implications remain uneven. This thesis examines street-tree exposure and 2023 residential sale prices in Portland, Oregon (n = 6,414) using a mixed-methodology hedonic design. Ordinary least squares models measure inventoried street-tree counts within 20m, 50m, and 100m buffers together with structural controls and census-block racial and ethnic context. Trees are positively and significantly associated with logged prices at all radii, with scale-sensitive magnitudes and modestly better fit as wider buffers. …

In 1987, the Brundtland Commission's Our Common Future (1987) made clear the need to reject longstanding development processes and focus on sustainable development. The Commission stressed that actual sustainable development integrates three elements: social development, economic development, and environmental protection. Though developed nations have achieved economic growth through conventional and extractive development practices, these practices have intensified natural disasters driven by climate change, increased food insecurity, and deepened poverty. This has acutely impacted Indigenous and local communities, many of whom face crisis conditions, such as war, terrorism, civil disorder, and their aftermath. Forest Fires Increase Vulnerability To Midwinter Rain-On-Snow Snowmelt In The Western Oregon Cascades, Sage C. Ebel, Kelly Gleason

Forest fires and rain-on-snow events in the seasonal snow zone of the Pacific Northwest are increasing in frequency and magnitude, yet the combined impacts of these events on snowpack and water resources remain poorly understood. We show that forest fires doubled midwinter snowmelt proportions in 2023 and 2024 compared to unburned reference sites in the western Oregon Cascades. Data from snow monitoring and micrometeorological stations installed across an elevational gradient revealed increased snowpack vulnerability during midwinter rain-on-snow events, where we observed more snowmelt per rain-on-snow event in the burned forest, indicating higher vulnerability of these snowpacks to rapid melt, increasing …

Poa annua L. is a widespread and persistent weed in managed turfgrass systems, exhibiting both annual and short-lived perennial growth habits. Effective management requires an integrated approach, with chemical herbicides remaining a primary tool. This review outlines the current landscape of chemical control strategies, including pre-emergence and post-emergence herbicide options, plant growth regulators, and emerging chemistries. Herbicide resistance in Poa annua continues to pose a significant challenge, with confirmed cases spanning multiple modes of action. Consequently, sustainable management depends on rotating herbicide classes, using mixtures and sequences of treatments, and integrating nonchemical tactics.

In their natural condition, Pacific Coast estuaries have extensive open mudflats in the intertidal area that are important shorebird feeding habitat and are used for oystering and recreational fishing. Several non-native cordgrass species are invading Pacific estuaries and damaging these functions and uses. Early detection is critical to effective management of cordgrass infestation. This key is intended to provide an easy-to-use reference for quick identification of Spartina (synonym: Sporobolus) species on the Pacific coast. We choose to focus on vegetative characteristics here, since flowers are not always visible when it can be advantageous to survey.

Flowering Rush (Butomus umbellatus) is an invasive aquatic plant in the Pacific Northwest that threatens salmon habitat. The Center for Lakes and Reservoirs staff surveyed for this and other aquatic species from 2024 and 2025 in the Columbia River in Lake Umatilla and Lake Celilo. This document summarizes their survey efforts including their protocols, data, and small-scale removal efforts.

Citizen's Rare Plant Watch (CRPW) is a community science program which takes volunteers out to visit populations of rare and threatened Oregon native plant species. Volunteers assess their health and viability, update the Oregon Biodiversity Information Center (ORBIC) state database for rare species, and help contribute to data driven management decisions throughout the state. Housed at Portland State University, this program is open to the public and attracts plant lovers from diverse backgrounds. Each spring, CRPW trains volunteers on methods of data collection, and this year we implemented new technology using Survey123 to streamline population assessments. We focus on species …

Let us imagine a future world where water management is more fully integrated and supported by the science of sociohydrology and related metadisciplines. This is a vision for the future where the social, cultural, environmental, and economic values of water are explicitly considered through the lens of the science–water policy interface. The ultimate value of research will be measured by how much it supports improvements in water resources and hazards management and, in particular, completes and enriches the science–water policy interface.
