The State of Arizona is marked by a great series of cliffs that extend from the mouth of the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River in the northwestern part of the state southeastward into New Mexico. This line of cliffs, rising 1000 to 4000 feet above the desert plains forms the southwestern and southern boundary of the great physiographic province called the Colorado Plateaus. It is roughly circular and includes northeastern Arizona, northwestern New Mexico, western Colorado, and a large part of Utah. In this bulletin there is presented a complete and accurate record of the amount of water pumped daily by a windmill, under actual working conditions, for a period of 14 months.

Aeroecological processes, especially powered flight of animals, can rapidly connect biological communities across the globe. This can have profound consequences for evolutionary diversification, energy and nutrient transfers, and the spread of infectious diseases. The latter is of particular consequence for human populations, since migratory birds are known to host diseases which have a history of transmission into domestic poultry or even jumping to human hosts. In this chapter, we present a scenario under which a highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) strain enters North America from East Asia via postmolting waterfowl migration.
