The Providence Island Formation In The Northern Appalachian Region - A Lower-Lower Middle Ordovician Analogue To Recent Arid-Semiarid Tidal-Flat Carbonates Of The Persian Gulf Trucial Coast, Mauricio Roma Hernandez Jan 1987

The Providence Island Formation In The Northern Appalachian Region - A Lower-Lower Middle Ordovician Analogue To Recent Arid-Semiarid Tidal-Flat Carbonates Of The Persian Gulf Trucial Coast, Mauricio Roma Hernandez

Geology Theses and Dissertations

The Providence Island Formation of Early-early Middle Ordovician age occurs in the Champlain Valley and adjacent areas in eastern New York, western Vermont, and southern Quebec. The unit forms part of a carbonate shelf sequence which occupied the eastern margin of the North American continent from Newfoundland to Alabama, and its lithology is representative of the dolostone lithofacies that characterizes the uppermost Beekmantown Group in this region.
This is the first study documenting depositional environments, diagenesis, and stratigraphic correlations of the Providence Island Formation. This formation consists, in decreasing abundance, of dolostones, limestones, shales, and dedolostones. The dominantly fine grain …

Granitic Pegmatites In The Southeastern Adirondacks: Their Use As Indicators Of Temperature, Pressure, And Fluid Conditions During A Late Stage Of The Grenville Orogeny, John P. Mihalich Jan 1987

Granitic Pegmatites In The Southeastern Adirondacks: Their Use As Indicators Of Temperature, Pressure, And Fluid Conditions During A Late Stage Of The Grenville Orogeny, John P. Mihalich

Geology Theses and Dissertations

Granitic pegmatites associated with the Grenville orogeny intrude a mid-Proterozoic, upper amphibolite to near granulite facies terrane in the southeastern Adirondack Mountains of New York State. The inferred anatectic, fluid-saturated, and minimum melt characteristics of the pegmatites suggest that they can be used as analogs of the "granite" or "haplogranite" system, and as indicators of crustal temperature, pressure, and fluid conditions during a late stage of the Grenville orogeny. Bulk chemical compositions of seven simple, undeformed pegmatites in the southeastern Adirondacks indicate that they are generally depleted in silica and sodium, and enriched in potassium, relative to experimental data on …

Geology, Geochemistry, And Geochronology Of The Lems Ridge Olistostrome, Klamath Mountains, California, Matthias Ohr Jan 1987

Geology, Geochemistry, And Geochronology Of The Lems Ridge Olistostrome, Klamath Mountains, California, Matthias Ohr

Geology Theses and Dissertations

The Lems Ridge olistostrome (LRO), located within the western Jurassic belt of the Klamath Mountains geologic province, is a melange unit showing a distinct block-in-matrix fabric. The conformable relationship to both an igneous basement and the overlying flysch of the Late Jurassic Galice Formation points to a sedimentary origin. The lack of pervasive deformation and the internal stratification also support a predominantly olistostromal origin of the LRO. The matrix of the LRO consists of pebbly mudstone which interfingers with tuffaceous greenstone and tuff-breccias. Subordinate beds of chert, argillite, and sandstone are also present. The matrix contains abundant ophiolitic clasts, fragments …

Geology Of The Northern Baie Verte Peninsula, Newfoundland, Canada, Pamela J. Stella Jan 1987

Geology Of The Northern Baie Verte Peninsula, Newfoundland, Canada, Pamela J. Stella

Geology Theses and Dissertations

On the eastern portion of the Burlington Peninsula of northwest central Newfoundland, Canada, there are two different age groups of volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks. There have been arguments in the past as to whether or not these two groups are actually only one group (Cape St. John Group) but with progressive intensity of deformation and metamorphism from south to north. Other workers have divided the rocks into two distinct groups, the Grand Cove Group and the Cape St. John Group based on their differences in deformation style and metamorphic grade. This study ignored previous divisions of the rocks into one …

Development And Application Of Some Quantitative Stratigraphic Techniques To The Coos Bay Coalfield, A Tertiary Fluvio-Deltaic Complex In Southwestern Oregon, Willard Sidney Titus Iii Jan 1987

Development And Application Of Some Quantitative Stratigraphic Techniques To The Coos Bay Coalfield, A Tertiary Fluvio-Deltaic Complex In Southwestern Oregon, Willard Sidney Titus Iii

Dissertations and Theses

A computer technique for interpreting geophysical logs of drill-holes in quantitative lithologic terms has been developed and tested on the deposits of the late Eocene Coaledo Formation, a well-studied fluvio-deltaic complex in southwestern Oregon. The technique involves the use of induced and natural gamma logs for separation of coal and claystone from coarse-grained detrital rocks and the use of the ratio of resistivity and natural gamma responses (defined here as the "grain size index") to divide the coarse elastic rocks into a series of textural classes corresponding to the Wentworth-Odden particle size scale.

Stratigraphic And Geochemical Evolution Of The Glass Buttes Complex, Oregon, Richard Louis Roche Jan 1987

Stratigraphic And Geochemical Evolution Of The Glass Buttes Complex, Oregon, Richard Louis Roche

Dissertations and Theses

Glass Buttes complex lies at the northern margin of the Basin and Range province in central Oregon and is cut by the northwest-trending Brothers fault zone. An older acrystalline volcanic sequence of high-silica rhyolites (>75% SiO2) forms a broad platform composed of domes and flows with minor pyroclastic deposits. The high-silica rhyolite sequence is divided on the basis of texture into 1) zoned flows and domes, 2) obsidian flows, 3) felsite flows, and 4) biotite-phyric flows and domes.

Stratigraphy Of The Ohanapecosh Formation North Of Hamilton Buttes, Southcentral Washington, Cynthia Marie Stine Jan 1987

Stratigraphy Of The Ohanapecosh Formation North Of Hamilton Buttes, Southcentral Washington, Cynthia Marie Stine

Dissertations and Theses

Over 1055 m of early Oligocene andesitic-dacitic volcaniclastic rocks and minor interbedded andesitic lava flows of the Ohanapecosh Formation are exposed in a dissected structural high in the southern Washington Cascade Range, about 22 km southwest of Packwood, Washington.

The exposed sequence of rocks in the study area are located approximately 250 m above the base of the Ohanapecosh Formation. A lower sequence of deposits, about 350 m in thickness, are dominated by primary and reworked lithic lapilli-tuff and epiclastic channelized volcanic sandstone and conglomerate. These sediments are interpreted as pyroclastic flows and stream deposits, respectively. The upper sequence, about …

Tephrostratigraphy Of The Middle Eocene Chumstick Formation, Cascade Range, Douglas County, Washington, Matthew John Mcclincy Jul 1986

Tephrostratigraphy Of The Middle Eocene Chumstick Formation, Cascade Range, Douglas County, Washington, Matthew John Mcclincy

Dissertations and Theses

This study outlines the ash (tuff) bed stratigraphy (tephrostratigraphy) in the middle Eocene Chumstick Formation of central Washington. The tuff beds provide local marker beds enabling interpretation of the stratigraphy and structure of the formation. The chemical signature of these units provides the basis on which the units can be traced over broad areas in the basin of deposition. Correlations of tuff beds were obtained over distances of 41 km.

The tephrostratigraphy of the Chumstick Formation consists of nineteen tuff marker beds. Seventeen of these units are chemically characterized in this study. Ten elements were used to fingerprint these tuff …

Biostratigraphy Of The Cowlitz Formation In The Upper Nehalem River Basin, Northwest Oregon, Neil B. Shaw Feb 1986

Biostratigraphy Of The Cowlitz Formation In The Upper Nehalem River Basin, Northwest Oregon, Neil B. Shaw

Dissertations and Theses

Examination of stream and roadcut exposures of the Cowlitz Formation allows the selection of measured representative sections, and collection of fossils, from an area roughly defined by the intersection of the boundaries of Clatsop, Columbia, Tillamook and Washington counties in Oregon. The study defines the features of the local environment of deposition, correlates sections to derive a composite columnar section, and develops a checklist of species for both microfossils and megafossils of the Cowlitz Formation.

Depositional History Of The St. Joe And Boone Formations In Northern Arkansas, Phillip R. Shelby Jan 1986

Depositional History Of The St. Joe And Boone Formations In Northern Arkansas, Phillip R. Shelby

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The Kinderhookian-Osagean (Lower Mississippian) St. Joe and Boone Limestone represent an unconformity bounded transgressive-regressive sequence widely distributed throughout the southern midcontinent. An irregular erosional surface developed on the Chattanooga Shale (Upper Devonian) or older strata. As Mississippian Seas transgressed, they deposited a thin interval of sandstone, shale, or the two together derived from these old beds. Carbonate deposition was initiated as grain-dominated, crinozoan-bryozoan packstones and grainstones, with subordinate wackestones, and is essentially chert free. These carbonates, referred to as the St. Joe Limestone, reflect a ramp across northern Arkansas that experienced condensed sedimentation and red coloration along its conditions reflected …

Biomarker Geochemistry Of The Miocene Monterey Formation, West San Joaquin Basin, California: Implications For Petroleum Generation, Michael A. Kruge Jan 1986

Biomarker Geochemistry Of The Miocene Monterey Formation, West San Joaquin Basin, California: Implications For Petroleum Generation, Michael A. Kruge

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Much of the Miocene Monterey Formation of California is rich in biogenic sediment, especially organic matter and silica. Because of the geologic structure, the Monterey in the subsurface near Lost Hills in the San Joaquin Basin forms a natural laboratory for the study of the diagenetic responses of these materials. Rocks of similar age and lithology are buried to depths ranging between 500 and 3500 m, and are thus exposed to a temperature range of 45–130°C. The diagenetic progression of silica from opal-A to opal-CT to microquartz is well-documented in Monterey burial history studies. However, diagenetic indicators need to be …

Dolomitization Of The Hatch Hill Arenites And The Burden Iron Ore, Peter Michael Hofmann Jan 1986

Dolomitization Of The Hatch Hill Arenites And The Burden Iron Ore, Peter Michael Hofmann

Geology Theses and Dissertations

The Taconic allochthon is a sequence of Cambrian or Precambrian to Ordovician rocks. It is composed of predominantly deep water argillaceous and subordinate arenaceous and calcareous rocks that were deposited on the continental rise and slope. During the Ordovician, sediments which were earlier deposited in the slope-rise environment were incorporated into the accretionary prism of an island arc that approached from the east, and subsequently overthrust the carbonate platform.
The Hatch Hill Formation is part of the Taconic sequence. It consists of dominantly black-gray slates, minor amounts of sandstones and carbonates. Previous workers have recognized the presence of dolomite and …

A Stratigraphic-Geochemical Study Of The Troutdale Formation And Sandy River Mudstone In The Portland Basin And Lower Columbia River Gorge, Rodney Duane Swanson Jan 1986

A Stratigraphic-Geochemical Study Of The Troutdale Formation And Sandy River Mudstone In The Portland Basin And Lower Columbia River Gorge, Rodney Duane Swanson

Dissertations and Theses

Hyaloclastic sediment forms an identifiable stratigraphic interval within the Troutdale Formation that can be traced from the Bridal Veil channel to the Portland basin. Hyaloclastic sediment composed chiefly vitric sands is found interbedded with muds, sandy muds and gravels penetrated by wells in northeast Portland are correlated with the upper member of the Troutdale Formation. These beds are characteristic of the informal upper member of the Troutdale Formation in the Bridal Veil channel of the ancestral Columbia River (Tolan and Beeson, 1984) and the type area of the Troutdale Formation exposed along the Sandy River (Trimble, 1963). Fluvially deposited hyaloclastic …
