INTRODUCTION (pp.1-4)

Mineralogical, textural and chemical changes of ultramafic rocks in response to regional deformation and metamorphism are, at best, imperfectly known (Miyashiro, 1973, p. 30). In Vermont, which has an extremely prominent and well-exposed belt of ultramafics (fig. 1), investigation of these rocks has largely been directed toward such processes as serpentinization, steatitization, and the formation of metasomatic zones at the contacts with country rocks. With few exceptions, there is a lack of detailed descriptions of regional metamorphic textures, mineralogy, and structures developed in the Vermont ultramafic rocks. This thesis presents the historical and stratigraphical evidence for the Persian and Arabic destructions of Caesarea Maritima. Its main purpose is to discover whether the stratigraphical data coincides with the historical information concerning the city in the sixth and seventh centuries A.D.

The archaeological data are the results of four seasons of excavation (1971, 1972, 1973, 1974) carried out by the Joint Expedition to Caesarea Maritima under the direction of Dr. R.J. Bull, Drew University, Madison, N.J. It is supported by a consortium of twenty-one Colleges, Seminaries, and Universities, including Wilfrid Laurier University, and is sponsored by the Albright Institute …

Microfossils From The Upper Severy Shale (Pennsylvanian) Near Dubois, Nebraska, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.

Organic rich limestone nodules within the Severy Shale Formation collected directly above the Nodaway Coal Member near DuBois, Nebraska, have yielded a rich microflora and microfauna. The microflora includes Triletes megaspores, seeds, cuticle, and pieces of wood with well preserved structures. The microfaunal skeletal material is either partially or completely replaced by pyrite, marcasite, or, in rare cases, by sphalerite. The following major invertebrate groups and genera within these groups have been identified to date: Bryozoa (one undetermined genus); Brachiopoda (Juresania) ; Gastropoda (four undetermined genera); Ammonoidea (one undetermined genus); Ostracoda (Amphissites, Coryellites, Hollinella, Macrocypris); Echinoidea (five spine types); and …

Biostratigraphic And Lithostratigraphic Analysis Of The Hindsville Limestone (Mississippian) In Northwestern Arkansas, Robert C. Grayson Jr.

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Several lithofacies can be recognized within the Hindsville Limestone (Mississippian) in its type area near Hindsville, Madison County, Arkansas. Lithofacies are based on petrographic analysis of matrix and constituent particles, particularly ooliths and skeletal grains. Hindsville deposition began with skeletal calcilutite incorporating chert rubble from the underlying Boone Formation. Increasing energy produced a sequence of skeletal calcarenites and oolites, and the end of Hindsville deposition was marked by a return to impure skeletal calcilutite. Conodonts recovered from the Hindsville Limestone include species of Cavusgnathus and Gnathodus. On the basis of reported ranges of these elements, the Hindsville appears to correlate …

Biostratigraphy Of The Type Yamhill Formation, Polk County, Oregon, Larry R. Gaston

One hundred and seventy-four species and varieties of fossil Foraminifera are recorded from thirty-eight localities in the Siletz River Volcanics, Yamhill and Nestucca Formations exposed along Mill and Gooseneck Creeks, in the Northern Coast Range of Oregon. Marginulina holmesi is described as new. The Foraminifera indicate that this sequence was deposited during late Ulatisian and Narizian time, in marine waters at bathyal or lower neritic depths, with cool surface temperatures. The Yamhill Formation can be correlated with Moody Shale member of the Toledo Formation and the Coaledo Formation of Oregon; the McIntosh and Aldwell Formations of Washington; and the upper …

The Pierre-Niobrara unconformity, one of several significant unconformities in the Cretaceous System of the Western Interior region, has not generally been recognized. Detailed correlation of electric logs of a large number of wells in western Nebraska provides evidence of its existence. Isopach maps of the beds occupying three identifiable stratigraphic intervals - a redefined Niobrara Formation, an unnamed uppermost Niobrara unit, and an unnamed basal Pierre unit, which includes the Ardmore Bentonite - provide recognizable geologic patterns that permit reconstruction of the stages of development of the unconformity.
