This thesis consists of two parts. The goal of first section is to better understand the influence of heterogeneity on contaminant transport. This objective is approached by quantifying the heterogeneity that may have affected transport of the Stanford-Waterloo tetrachloroethene (PCE) plume. Specifically, I determine the statistical distribution of the PCE sorption distribution coefficient (K_d) at Canadian Forces Base Borden, identify the spatial distribution of K_d, and determine the cross-correlation structure between PCE Kd and permeability (k). The results show that K_d is not lognormally distributed, and that variance is insufficient to …

Transition From Contraction To Extension In The Northeastern Basin And Range: New Evidence From The Copper Mountains, Nevada, Jeffrey M. Rahl, Allen J. Mcgrew, Kenneth A. Foland

New mapping, structural analysis, and 40Ar/39Ar dating reveal an unusually well‐constrained history of Late Eocene extension in the Copper Mountains of the northern Basin and Range province. In this area, the northeast‐trending Copper Creek normal fault juxtaposes a distinctive sequence of metacarbonate and granitoid rocks against a footwall of Upper Precambrian to Lower Cambrian quartzite and phyllite. Correlation of the hanging wall with footwall rocks to the northwest provides an approximate piercing point that requires 8–12 km displacement in an ESE direction. This displaced fault slice is itself bounded above by another normal fault (the Meadow Fork Fault), which brings …

A data base collected over the last 100 years, containing both surface and subsurface information, has allowed us to begin to understand the physical framework of Nebraska. We have learned that even in the stable Midcontinent region of North America, there has been an active geologic history. This framework has been deciphered by our programs of surface geologic mapping and by the study of rock samples from both water wells and those deeper test wells for oil and gas. Ecoregions denote areas of general similarity in ecosystems and in the type, quality, and quantity of environmental resources; they are designed to serve as a spatial framework for the research, assessment, management, and monitoring of ecosystems and ecosystem components. Ecoregions are directly applicable to the immediate needs of state agencies, including the development of biological criteria and water quality standards, and the establishment of management goals for nonpoint-source pollution. In 1930, the Conservation and Survey Division (CSD) of the University of Nebraska and the United States Geological Survey began a program of cooperative groundwater studies in Nebraska. Since then test drilling by use of rotary drilling equipment has been an integral part of that program. This report contains logs of all the test holes drilled in Arthur County under the program as well as those drilled by the Conservation and Survey Division with financial assistance from other government agencies.

The maps in this report show the locations of all test holes drilled in the county since 1934.
