Spatial And Temporal Patterns Of Fluvial Suspended Sediment Yield From Eastern North America, Catherine Treena Conrad
Spatial And Temporal Patterns Of Fluvial Suspended Sediment Yield From Eastern North America, Catherine Treena Conrad
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
A knowledge of spatial and temporal patterns of sediment yields and an understanding of the factors that determine those patterns have theoretical, environmental and socio-economic significance. To assess the change in sediment yields (in both space and time) a data base of 193 river gauging sites spanning the eastern provinces of Canada and eastern United States was compiled. The original source of the data was the United States Geological Survey data base (obtained from a Hydrosphere Data Inc. cd-rom) and Environment Canada (HYDAT) data base, which included stream discharge, sediment loads and basin areas, with record lengths of one year …

Hydrothermal Sediments Associated With A Relict Back-Arc Spreading Center In The Shikoku Basin, Recovered From The Nankai Accretionary Prism, Japan, Jane L. Alexander, Kevin T. Pickering, Elizabeth H. Bailey
Publications and Research
The hemipelagic mudrocks of the Nankai accretionary prism, Japan, contain hydrothermal deposits associated with a relict spreading center in the Shikoku Basin. Initial work on core samples from Ocean Drilling Program Site 808 found several samples with elevated concentrations of calcium, magnesium, iron and manganese, at depths of between 1060 and 1111 m below sea floor. However, the origin of these sediments was uncertain, due to a lack of data. There was no recorded evidence of whether these elevated concentrations were present throughout this interval of core, or if they were present as discrete layers with the background hemipelagic mudrocks …
Bulletin 4359 - Soils Of The Swan Coastal Plain, Mike Bolland
Bulletin 4359 - Soils Of The Swan Coastal Plain, Mike Bolland
Bulletins 4000 -
Almost all the soils of the Swan coastal plain are formed by material deposited by sea, rivers and wind. The Yilgarn Block, east and south of the Scarp bordering the Swan Coastal Plain (Fig. 1), rose about 40 to 50 million years ago. This caused erosion of the block by rivers and streams, and the eroded material was either deposited onto the Swan Coastal Plain or washed into the sea. The eroded material formed new soils on the Plain.
Broadly there are two major types of soils on the Coastal Plain. The first is a series of dune system near …

Classification Of Torbanite And Cannel Coal. I. Insights From Petrographic Analysis Of Density Fractions., Zhiwen Han, Michael A. Kruge, John C. Crelling, David F. Bensley
Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Torbanite and cannel coal are considered to be coals because of their low mineral content and overall physical morphology. However, the texture and composition of the organic matter in torbanite and cannel coal are similar to the kerogen occurring in oil shales and lacustrine source rocks. Therefore, understanding the nature and origin of organic components in torbanite and cannel coal is of significance in the study of kerogen and petroleum formation. In this research, a set of torbanites and cannel coals from different locations throughout the world were petrographically characterized and processed using a density gradient centrifugation (DGC) technique. Microscopically, …

Classification Of Torbanite And Cannel Coal. Ii. Insights From Organic Geochemical And Multivariate Statistical Analysis, Zhiwen Han, Michael A. Kruge
Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Petrographic and megascopic criteria have traditionally been used as the basis for the classification of torbanite and cannel coal. For this study, it was hypothesized that modern analytical organic geochemical and multivariate statistical techniques could provide an alternative approach. Towards this end, the demineralized residues of 14 torbanite (rich in Botryococcus-related alginite) and cannel (essentially, rich in organic groundmass and/or sporinite) coal samples were analyzed by pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). Cluster analysis performed on the Py-GC/MS data clearly distinguished the torbanite from the cannel coal, demonstrating a consistency between the chemical properties and the petrographic composition. All the torbanite …

2018 Nebraska Water Leaders Academy - Final Report, Mark E. Burbach
Conservation and Survey Division: Faculty and Staff Publications
Nineteen participants completed the 2018 Water Leaders Academy bringing the total number of graduates to 120 since the inception of the program in 2011. Assessment of participants’ transformational leadership skills, champion of innovation skills, water knowledge and engagement, civic capacity, and entrepreneurial leadership behaviors showed a significant increase over the course of the year, from both participants’ and their raters’ perspectives. Feedback from participants was highly positive and constructive. Participant concerns were addressed, and only minor changes are planned for the 2019 Academy curriculum. Results of the program assessment indicate that the curriculum is meeting Academy objectives. Most importantly, Alumni …

Chemical Weathering Of Volcanic Ash As A Probable Origin Of Chert In The Reid's Mistake Formation Of The Newcastle Coal Measures, Sydney Basin, Australia, Adil M. Wadia
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Chert is normally considered to be marine biogenic in origin. However, chert lenses and nodules in the volcanic ash horizon of the Reid's Mistake Formation at Swansea Head, Newcastle Coal Measures of the Sydney Basin appear to have formed differently. Their mode of occurrence and their close association with paper-thin clay layers within the same volcanic unit suggest that they formed as a result of chemical weathering of volcanic ash. This hypothesis is supported by the data gathered from thin section petrography and x-ray diffraction analyses. Petrographic studies indicate the precipitation of microcrystalline to cryptocrystalline quartz and the dissolution/replacement/alteration of …

A Paleoenvironmental Study Of A Middle Wisconsinan Biota Site, Russell County, Virginia, Thomas C. Wynn
OES Theses and Dissertations
The study area lies in a first-order valley on the northwestern slope of Clinch Mountain that drains into Moccasin Creek. The deposit is 50 m long, 25 m wide and approximately 10 m thick and overlies the Ordovician Moccasin Formation. Preserved within the deposit are mammoth and mastodon bones, logs, and plant macrofossils. Radiocarbon analyses indicate the age of the organic-rich sediments ranges from 29, I 00 BP to >44,000 BP, a time period with no fossil remains reported in this region of the Appalachians. Analyses of field observations, textural data, organic carbon content, and plant macrofossils indicate the organic-rich …
