Machairodont Cats From The Early Pleistocene Broadwater And Lisco Local Faunas, C. Bertrand Schultz, Larry D. Martin

A new species of Ischyrosmilus (I. crusafonti) is reported from the Early Pleistocene Broadwater Local Fauna of Morrill County, Nebraska. Ischyrosmilus sp. is reported from the Early Pleistocene Lisco Local Fauna. Megantereon is reported from the Broadwater Local Fauna and this is the first record of the genus from North America.

The 2-fold purpose of this study is to calibrate a Rapid Sediment Analyzer and to use it to aid in the determination of the genesis of sediment on the inner continental shelf between Cape Henry and Cape Hatteras. Rapid Sediment Analyzer calibration was conducted by comparison of sieving and settling results of similar sands.

The study area was divided into sediment provinces by both a qualitative procedure (grain size and topography) and a quantitatively procedure (factor-vector analysis). Qualitative provinces are beach and surf, upper shore face, lower shore face, sea floor, and terminal shoals. The berm fines from each terminal …

A New Tribe Of Saber-Toothed Cats (Barbourofelini) From The Pliocene Of North America, C. Bertrand Schultz, Marian R. Schultz, Larry D. Martin

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

A new genus of Pliocene Saber-toothed felid, Barbourofelis, is proposed and two new species B. fricki and B. morrisi are described. These two forms and other described material represent an unusual lineage of felids with long sabers, shortened crania, and massive postorbital bars. The tribal name Barbourofelini is proposed for this lineage which is presently known in North America from deposits ranging in age from Clarendonian through Kimballian. The Barbourofelini apparently migrated from Eurasia to North America in the Late Miocene or Early Pliocene. Sansanosmilus of the French Vindobonian appears to represent the ancestral stock of these cats. The …

Located in the west central portion of Clark County, Nevada, the Spring Mountain Range borders the western edge of the Las Vegas Valley. Within the mountain range, a fault block, there are several canyons whose geomorphic history is closely related to the geomorphic history of the major alluvial fans which flank the mountains. Lee Canyon, which is the study area is one of these canyons. In Lee Canyon is preserved a complex canyon fill which has been subjected to several periods of down-cutting and valley-widening. A New Rhinoceros From The Nebraska Miocene, Lloyd G. Tanner

A new species of rhinoceros, Menoceras marslandensis, is here proposed. It is based upon a nearly complete skull from the upper part of the Marsland Formation, Hemingford Group (Miocene), of Box Butte County, Nebraska. The new species was probably derived from Menoceras arikarense (Barbour), collected from the Agate Springs Quarries (Arikaree Group, Harrison Formation) of Sioux County, Nebraska, with which both Diceratherium niobrarensis Peterson and D. cooki Peterson are likely synonymous. From Menoceras arikarense, the presumed ancestral stock, Menoceras marslandensis differs in possessing the following characters: (1) very long, fused but slightly cleft, nasals, with flattened, rugose areas …

A Fluorescent Tracer Study At A Tidal Inlet (Rudee Inlet, Virginia), James W. Bunch

Patterns and approximate rates of littoral transport south of Rudee Inlet. Virginia were investigated with fluorescent tracers. Sand movement was traced under a variety of longshore current and wave conditions. Patterns of tracer dispersal reflected the importance of wave height, breaker angle, and longshore current velocity on modes of littoral transport. A direct relationship between angle of breaker incidence. generated longshore current. and direction of tracer sand movement was found. Onshore offshore paths were taken by tracer material during periods of weak longshore currents and small breaker angles while alongshore paths were followed by tracer material during strong longshore currents …

Mount Merino Chert and Shale, Middle Ordovician, is one of the most siliceous units of the Taconic sequence (eastern New York and western Vermont); it is composed of interbedded shale, siliceous hale, argillite and chert. Non-clastic quartz — aggregates of quartz having a.mosaic or felted texture — predominates in all beds, except `shale. All siliceous beds are finely laminated; most laminae are distinguished from adjacent laminae by the texture of the quartz groundmass, and the amount of clastics, carbonates, chlorite and sulphides. Statistical comparison of the textures of the quartz aggregates which occur with the other mineral components suggests that …
