When the writer was examining some of the volcanic plugs near Cabezon, New Mexico in the spring of 1951, he discovered in Plug No. 5 (Pl. 2, D.W. Johnson, 1907) some unusual, large vitreous inclusions.

Supergene minerals are not common, nor are they rare at Santa Rita, New Mexico. Kerr (1950,307) reports the presence of cuprite, melaconite, native copper, chrysocolla, machite and azurite. There is also smithsonite present.

The physical appearance of the mineral, coupled with preliminary determinations of the indices of refraction, gave a rough correspondence with dihydrite (Larson and Berman, 1934, 135). However, enough discrepancy existed to warrant taking powder and Weissenberg X-Ray pictures. From these it was evident immediately that the specimen was a new mineral species.

The Loup River and its tributaries transport moderate amounts of siliceous minerals from the sand hills region of north-central Nebraska to the Platte River near Columbus, Nebr. Predominant chemical characteristics of these waters are a high percentage of silica, moderate hardness, and a low percentage of sodium. The composition of the Loup River water is influenced by the geologic formations through which ground water, a major contributor to the flows of the Loup River branches, has percolated. The White Rock Canyon area is in the Rio Grande depression in north-central New Mexico between parallels 35 degrees 33' and 35 degrees 53' and meridians 106 degrees 4' and 106 degrees 21' (Figure 1). It occupies part of western Santa Fe County and eastern Sandoval County. The area was named for White Rock Canyon which has been formed by the Rio Grande. This canyon, called Caja del Rio by the Spanish, meaning "box of the river", begins at the town of Buckman and extends southward as a narrow gorge for a distance of 19 miles. The area encloses 316 …

This report represents a detailed study of the geology of a small area in the vicinity of Golden, Santa Fe County, New Mexico. The area is one of low hills, dissected by numerous small arroyos, lying between the Ortiz Mountains on the north and the San Pedro Mountains on the south. To the west the area merges into the Hagan Coal Basin, and to the east the low pass between the mountains descends into the headwaters of Galisteo Creek and into the Estanica Valley.

This study was undertaken with the foremost objective of determining the stratigraphy and structure of the area, and correlating it with known surrounding areas.

The method of study was through geologic mapping in the field. The formational contacts, faults and other features were studied in the field with the aid of aerial photographs. The sections were measured in the field by hand-leveling with a Brunton compass up across the exposures. The lithology of the formations was studied as the sections were measured. The base map was taken from a planimetric map prepared by the Soil Conservation Service from aerial photos. …

The primary objective of the problem is to relate electric characteristics to lithologic characteristics in four wells in San Juan County, New Mexico. The secondary objective is to decipher stratigraphic correlations between wells. The wells, in San Juan County, are geologically located in the San Juan Basin, a structural basin in the Colorado Plateau. The formations range in age from Paleozoic Cambrian (?) to Cenozoic Recent. The boundaries of the Basin are ill-defined and have shifted throughout the history of the area.

The Dunmore lode is located near Ouray, Colorado in the northwest part of the San Juan Mountains. In structure as well as mineral assemblage it shows a connection between the chimneys and veins of the region. The lode averages about 100 feet wide for 1,200 feet along the Dunmore claim. The fissure zone is over two miles long and displacement along it has offset a folded pre-Cambrian complex 4,500 feet prior to the deposition of 2,400 feet of volcanic tuff. Aeroecological processes, especially powered flight of animals, can rapidly connect biological communities across the globe. This can have profound consequences for evolutionary diversification, energy and nutrient transfers, and the spread of infectious diseases. The latter is of particular consequence for human populations, since migratory birds are known to host diseases which have a history of transmission into domestic poultry or even jumping to human hosts. In this chapter, we present a scenario under which a highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) strain enters North America from East Asia via postmolting waterfowl migration.
