Gully, Scour Hole, And Pothole Development At The Base Of The Gering Formation (Miocene?), Southeastern Banner County, Nebraska, Robert F. Diffendal Jr. Sep 1982

Gully, Scour Hole, And Pothole Development At The Base Of The Gering Formation (Miocene?), Southeastern Banner County, Nebraska, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.

Robert F. Diffendal, Jr., Publications

Several sediment-filled paleovalleys belonging to the Arikaree Group of Miocene (?) age occur in southeastern Banner County, Nebraska. One gully and a main paleovalley exhibit, respectively, erosional features like those in modern gullies in the area and like those on the bedrock floors of modern straight streams carrying an appreciable sediment load. Scour holes and a pothole on the valley floor of the main paleovalley are similar to those produced experimentally on the bed of a straight stream.

Impact Of Urban Stormwater Runoff On The Water Quality Of The Subsurface Lost River, Bowling Green, Kentucky, Donald Rice Jul 1982

Impact Of Urban Stormwater Runoff On The Water Quality Of The Subsurface Lost River, Bowling Green, Kentucky, Donald Rice

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Bowling Green, Kentucky is located in a distinctive karst region, characterized by subsurface drainage. The Lost River is a large subsurface stream which flows beneath the city. It receives much of the stormwater runoff from Bowling Green, since most of the city's runoff is directed underground. Significant pollutants in Bowling Green's stormwater runoff were identified from water quality test results of storm event grab samples, and a composite sample, of runoff entering the urban By-Pass Cave. Water quality test results were also obtained from storm event grab samples, and a composite sample, of the Lost River at the Blue Hole …

Nonpoint Agricultural Pollution In A Karst Aquifer: Lost River Groundwater Drainage Basin, Warren County, Kentucky, Nancy Tucker Jun 1982

Nonpoint Agricultural Pollution In A Karst Aquifer: Lost River Groundwater Drainage Basin, Warren County, Kentucky, Nancy Tucker

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Chemical analysis of samples collected from subsurface streams and wells were analyzed to identify nonpoint pollutants in karst aquifers resulting from agricultural land use. Major flow paths and travel times taken by nonpoint pollutants were identified. A land use limitation map showing areas where agricultural activities may results in nonpoint pollution of the karst aquifer was prepared. A groundwater susceptibility map was prepared to show areas of the karst aquifer most susceptible to groundwater contamination by nonpoint pollution resulting from agricultural land use.

Research findings revealed that pollutant concentrations may reach levels thousands of times greater during high discharge events …

Regional Implications Of The Geology Of The Ogallala Group (Upper Tertiary) Of Southwestern Morrill County, Nebraska, And Adjacent Areas, Robert F. Diffendal Jr. Jan 1982

Regional Implications Of The Geology Of The Ogallala Group (Upper Tertiary) Of Southwestern Morrill County, Nebraska, And Adjacent Areas, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.

Robert F. Diffendal, Jr., Publications

A part of a filled Ogallala Group (upper Tertiary) paleovalley system exhumed by recent stream erosion in southwestern Morrill County, Nebraska, and adjacent areas contains steep gradient gullies filled with locally derived sediments. Younger channels filled with granitic gravels derived by stream erosion of the Rocky Mountains to the west and southwest cut across and through these older filled gullies, indicating that there were at least two periods of downcutting followed by periods of filling during the development of this system.

Individual clasts from younger Ogallala gravels are often as large as or larger than clasts from Quaternary gravels transported …

Reconnaissance Of The Bedrock Aquifers And Groundwater Chemistry Of Crawford, Franklin, And Sebastian Counties, Arkansas, Samuel R. Rothermel, Wyndal M. Robison, Julie L. Wanslow, James R. Musgrove, Daryll Saulsberry, Albert E. Ogden Jan 1982

Reconnaissance Of The Bedrock Aquifers And Groundwater Chemistry Of Crawford, Franklin, And Sebastian Counties, Arkansas, Samuel R. Rothermel, Wyndal M. Robison, Julie L. Wanslow, James R. Musgrove, Daryll Saulsberry, Albert E. Ogden

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

A ground water reconnaissance of Crawford, Franklin, and Sebastian counties was performed utilizing 122 wells having drillers' logs from bedrock aquifers. North of the Arkansas River, essentially all bedrock wells produce from the Atoka Formation. There are many low producing aquifers within the Atoka with a range in yield of 0.1 to 55 gpm, but having a median yield of only 2 gpm. Well depths range from 18 to 248 feet with a median of 122 feet. More water is generally obtained from the shale/siltstone aquifers than the sandstones due to more bedding-plane partings and more closely spaced fractures. Greater …

Preliminary Investigation Of Ground-Water Occurrence In The Atoka Formation Of Pope And Faulkner Counties, Arkansas, Wyndal M. Goodman, Albert E. Ogden

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

One hundred and twelve wells having drillers' logs were studied in Pope and Faulkner counties. Sixty-six of the wells produced water from shales and siltstones of the Atoka Formation while 46 produced from interbedded Atoka sandstones. Drillers' estimated well yields ranged from 1 to 100 gpm, but the median yield was only 9 gpm. Well depths ranged from 30 to 337 feet with a median depth of 100 feet. Ground-water is usually obtained from a series of low-producing confined aquifers of low artesian pressure. Pressure head and production were shown, statistically (a = .01), to decrease with increasing well depth. …

Hydrology Of The Sinking Creek System, Logan And Simpson Counties, Kentucky, James C. Cubbage Dec 1981

Hydrology Of The Sinking Creek System, Logan And Simpson Counties, Kentucky, James C. Cubbage

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Southwest of Bowling Green, Kentucky, is the Western Pennyroyal, is a karstified area which has been neglected in the study of its ground water. About 100 square miles near Adairville were chosen for analysis to help rectify this lack of knowledge. The area is dominated by Sinking Creek, a surface-subsurface drainage system.

The main purpose of the study was to map the underground flow in the Sinking Creek area. The drainage system seemed to be typical for the Western Pennyroyal and exhibited many similarities to flow paths known in the Central Kentucky Karst.

The investigation proved to be of basic …

Geology And Groundwater Supplies Of Southern Dawes And Northern Sheridan Counties, Nebraska, Vernon L. Souders

Conservation and Survey Division: Faculty and Staff Publications

The upland plain in southern Dawes and northern Sheridan counties of northwest Nebraska is underlain by rocks of Tertiary age. These rocks overlie those of Cretaceous and Jurassic ages in this region of about 2250 square miles . Strata of Tertiary age are a source of groundwater for most of the irrigation, municipal, stock, and rural-domestic needs of the area.

Nine stratigraphic units of Tertiary.age were defined by examination of test hole samples and logs and by examining electric logs of oil and gas tests, driller's logs of irrigation wells, and outcrops. Stratigraphic correlations are difficult in the area because …

Quaternary Geology Of Chaco Canyon, Northwestern New Mexico, David Waxham Love Dec 1980

Quaternary Geology Of Chaco Canyon, Northwestern New Mexico, David Waxham Love

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The overall purpose of studying the Quaternary geology of Chaco Canyon is to develop an understanding of how the geomorphic system in the Chaco drainage evolved and how it presently operates. This dissertation has several subsidiary purposes; (1) to describe and relate modern sedimentary features and facies (which are likely to be preserved in the alluvial fill of the canyon) to modern geomorphic processes, (2) to use the results from the study of modern sediments to interpret exposures of alluvium in Chaco Canyon in order to reconstruct past environments, (3) to develop conceptual models of the geologic subsystems of the …
