The Anatomy And Phylogeny Of A New Large Plioplatecarpine Mosasaur From The Campanian Bearpaw Shale Of Montana (Usa), Richard A. Carr
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
In 2018, a large and associated plioplatecarpine mosasaur skull, pectoral girdle, and rib cage, whose total body length may have exceeded five meters, was uncovered in the Late Campanian Bearpaw Shale of Northeast Montana (USA). Phylogenetic analysis of this specimen, MOR 10855, recovers this individual as a basal member of the genus Plioplatecarpus. This specimen, is unique in that it is estimated to be nearly twice the size of any of the other species of Plioplatecarpus found in the Western Interior Seaway during this part of the Cretaceous. While the included phylogenetic study suggests MOR 10855 represents a new …
Measuring Ground Surface Elevation Changes In A Slow-Moving Colluvial Landslide Using Combinations Of Regional Airborne Lidar, Uav Lidar And Uav Photogrammetric Surveys, Sarah E. Johnson, William C. Haneburg, Lindsey Sebastian Bryson, Matthew M. Crawford

Slow-moving, chronically destructive landslides are projected to grow in number globally in response to precipitation increases from climate change, and land disturbances from wildfire, mining and construction. In the Cincinnati and northern Kentucky metropolitan area, USA, landslides develop in colluvium that covers the steep slopes along the Ohio River and its tributaries. Here we quantify elevation changes in a slow-moving colluvial landslide over 14 years using county-wide lidar, uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) structure-from-motion (SfM) surveys and a UAV lidar survey. Because the technology and quality differ between surveys, the challenge was to calculate a threshold of detectable change for each …

Landslide susceptibility mapping (LSM) characterizes landslide potential, which is essential for assessing landslide risk and developing mitigation strategies. Despite the significant progress in LSM research over the past two decades, several long-standing issues, such as uncertainties related to training samples and model selection, remain inadequately addressed in the literature. In this study, we employed a physically based susceptibility model, PISA-m, to generate four different non-landslide data scenarios and combine them with mapped landslides from Magoffin County, Kentucky, for model training. We utilized two Bayesian network model structures, Naïve Bayes (NB) and Tree-Augmented Naïve Bayes (TAN), to produce LSMs based on …

Landslide susceptibility maps indicate the spatial distribution of landslide likelihood. Modeling susceptibility over large or diverse terrains remains a challenge due to the sparsity of landslide data (mapped extent of known landslides) and the variability in triggering conditions. Several different data sampling strategies of landslide locations used to train a susceptibility model are used to mitigate this challenge. However, to our knowledge, no study has systematically evaluated how different sampling strategies alter a model's predictor effects (i.e., how a predictor value influences the susceptibility output) critical to explaining differences in model outputs. Here, we introduce a statistical framework that examines …

Neoichnological Framework Of Coastal Habitat Shifts Represented By Bahamian Decapod Burrows, Ilya Val Buynevich, Karen Kopcznski, Christopher Sparacio, H. Allen Curran
Geosciences: Faculty Publications
In coastal settings, the cumulative spatial and temporal impacts of burrowing, ichnofabric formation, and biodeposition by large crustaceans have been largely neglected at zoogeomorphic scales. These traces also serve as important (paleo-)environmental and (paleo)hydrologic indicators, both vertical (tidal or groundwater level) and lateral (areal wetland or basin extent). To date, 354 only few studies have addressed the comparative value of decapod ichnites generated by land crabs in carbonate settings. The aim of this paper is to introduce a general conceptual framework for burrows created by three crab species in the Bahama Archipelago, using examples from San Salvador Island.

Estimating Bedrock Shear Wave Velocity At Vsap, Paducah, Kentucky, Using Ambient Noise, Russel Rogers
Theses and Dissertations--Earth and Environmental Sciences
Due to the nature of the Mississippi Embayment region and its vicinity to the New Madrid Seismic Zone, earthquake ground-motion site effects are potential hazards and quantifying the associated hazard is a necessary step for public safety. Measuring the Vs contrast between bedrock and overlying soil layers is necessary for site effect evaluation. Various methodologies for investigating shear wave velocity (Vs) profiles have been implemented in the Mississippi Embayment. However, these previous studies provided a wide range of bedrock Vs. In this study, microtremor array measurements, utilizing ambient background noise, were used to provide an additional estimate …
A Conceptual Framework For Managed Aquifer Recharge In The Columbia River Basalts Of The Lower Yakima River Basin, Bethany Kharrazi
A Conceptual Framework For Managed Aquifer Recharge In The Columbia River Basalts Of The Lower Yakima River Basin, Bethany Kharrazi
All Master's Theses
In the Yakima River Basin in south-central Washington, increasing demands for water, overallocation of surface water, and a changing climate are leading to a loss of water storage and increasing water deficits in drought years. A warming climate has reduced snowpack in the Cascade Range, a vital reservoir for the irrigated agricultural industry which supports the basin’s economy. Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) is a sustainable and cost-effective approach for securing water supply by storing water underground for recovery during drought. Diminishing groundwater levels in regional basalt aquifers over the last several decades suggest there is significant storage available for intentional …
Estimating Evapotranspiration And Analyzing Soil Moisture And Heat Flux Parameters At Taneum Creek, Central Washington, Edward Vlasenko
Estimating Evapotranspiration And Analyzing Soil Moisture And Heat Flux Parameters At Taneum Creek, Central Washington, Edward Vlasenko
All Master's Theses
In the past two decades, stream restoration work, primarily in the form of wood emplacement, has been undertaken in the Taneum Creek watershed, resulting in increased channel-floodplain connectivity. One of the goals of stream restoration was to boost dry season groundwater storage in the shallow floodplain aquifer. However, any gains in groundwater due to increased connectivity may be nullified by increased evapotranspiration (ET) losses because of denser floodplain vegetation. Within the floodplain aquifer budget, ET is a major flow of water out of the system and is not well quantified.
In order to quantify ET, a monitoring site was established …
Hydrologic And Geomorphic Investigations Of Two Engineered Stream Crossings Under Interstate 90 In Washington State, Catherine Mast
Hydrologic And Geomorphic Investigations Of Two Engineered Stream Crossings Under Interstate 90 In Washington State, Catherine Mast
All Master's Theses
The importance of stream restoration in providing a healthy ecosystem is widely recognized. The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has implemented environmental changes to facilitate habitat restoration and wildlife passage along the Interstate 90 Highway (I-90) corridor where it passes over the Cascade Mountains. Prior to the I-90 corridor expansion, Price and Noble Creeks passed under the highway though culverts, limiting passage of aquatic species or wildlife below the highway. In 2019 the stream channel crossings were expanded, and the size/shape of these creeks were engineered to mirror what would be seen in a natural environment. Since construction, erosion …
Using Modflow To Assess Groundwater Storage Enhancement Via A Floodplain Infiltration Basin, Lindsay Henning
Using Modflow To Assess Groundwater Storage Enhancement Via A Floodplain Infiltration Basin, Lindsay Henning
All Master's Theses
Delaying groundwater discharge into rivers until it is critically needed during baseflow conditions provides promise for lowering elevated stream temperatures and improving habitat for aquatic species. Increasing groundwater storage may accomplish this in locations where excess spring runoff can be captured and allowed to infiltrate into the subsurface for later beneficial use, a process known as Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR). Here, MAR via an infiltration basin is considered at a site along the Teanaway River in central Washington State. The effects of simulated ephemeral ponds of sizes varying from 554 m3 to 2430 m3 (0.449 acre-feet to 1.97 …

This study investigates the characteristics and color variations of spinels from main deposits, including Liolava in Madagascar, Tunduru in Tanzania, Mogok in Myanmar, and three deposits in Vietnam (Minh Tien, Lang Chap, and An Phu). These spinel samples are categorized into four color varieties, i.e., red, orange, blue, and purple. All samples yielded the common properties of spinels. In addition, most red and orange spinels display strong red fluorescence under long wave ultraviolet (LWUV) and short wave ultraviolet (SWUV) lamps, however, some orange spinels exhibit non-fluorescence to red fluorescence under SWUV lamps. Blue spinel displays non-fluorescence under LWUV and SWUV …
Constraining Rock Type Controls On Geophysical Properties: Implications For Earthquake Hazard Assessment Near Ellensburg, Washington, Zachary Stevens
Constraining Rock Type Controls On Geophysical Properties: Implications For Earthquake Hazard Assessment Near Ellensburg, Washington, Zachary Stevens
All Master's Theses
High precision geophysical modeling can constrain the geometry of structures in the upper to middle crust beyond what is possible with surface data alone, which allows for a better understanding of seismic hazards. This modeling requires values of both the magnetic susceptibility and density relevant to rocks at depth; this study presents a combination of field and laboratory measurements of basement units to determine these properties. The basement rock of the Kittitas Valley is made up of a complex series of metamorphic and igneous bodies, so it was important to gather a representative suite of samples of the most volumetrically …

The Swauk Mining District in Central Washington state is a historic mining community with active small scale mining dating back to the 1870’s. Gold has been mined from both lode and placer deposits. The placer deposits of Liberty area are unique due to the variety of gold textures, most notably are the nuggets of tangled masses of dendritic crystals and wire gold.
This research aims to determine the paragenic sequence that led to the formation of the lode and placer gold deposits using a combination of field work and laboratory analyses. Field work consisted of small-scale detailed mapping, recording of …
Paleoseismic Investigation Of Rupture On The Dead Coyote Fault In The Kittitas Valley, Washington, Garet Huddleston
Paleoseismic Investigation Of Rupture On The Dead Coyote Fault In The Kittitas Valley, Washington, Garet Huddleston
All Master's Theses
Recently discovered fault scarps along the Dead Coyote Fault (DCF) in the northern Kittitas Valley (KV) of central Washington suggests active faulting in the late Quaternary, but constraints on the timing and potential magnitude of earthquakes along the fault zone are limited. The KV lies at the northwestern edge of the Yakima Fold and Thrust Belt (YFTB), a low-strain region where individual structures are capable of producing M~7 earthquakes.
This investigation uses surficial geologic mapping and topographic analysis of the DCF scarps, ground penetrating radar transects, and paleoseismic trenching to determine the rupture history of the DCF. The trench was …

Climate Changes In El Salvador: Impacts Of ‘La Canícula’ (Midsummer Drought) On Agricultural Practices And Decision-Making In Rural Communities, Paola M. Rivera González
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
The Central American Dry Corridor (CADC), a tropical, dry-forest region, is characterized by distinct rainy and dry seasons, which influence the local agricultural calendar and planting decisions in rural communities. La canícula is a period of decreased precipitation during the rainy season, which occurs during the corn-planting season in El Salvador. La canícula is expected to change in intensity and duration in the next decades, which would impact small-scale farmers and their livelihoods. Climate variability and uncertainty has led to crop loss, water scarcity, and food insecurity in rural communities dependent on subsistence farming. Farmers’ experiences with a changing climate …

The Role Of Non-Climate Data In Equitable Climate Adaptation Planning: Lessons From Small French And American Cities, Elena Lioubimtseva, Charlotte Da Cunha
Open Access Publishing Support Funded Articles
There is a growing consensus that to effectively adapt to climate change, cities need userfriendly tools and reliable high-resolution biophysical and socio-economic data for analysis, mapping, modeling, and visualization. This study examines the availability of various types of information used in climate adaptation plans of 40 municipalities with a population of less than 300,000 people in the United States and France, probing into the choice and usage of relevant information by small municipalities. We argue that non-climatic spatial data, such as population demographic and socioeconomic patterns, urban infrastructure, and environmental data must be integrated with climate tools and datasets to …
Developing The Housing Attribute And Spatial Index (Hasi) Tool To Identify Characteristic Neighborhoods Using Variable Importance Factors Calculated Utilizing Random Forest Regression Modeling In Arcgis Pro, William A. Wallace
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
The purpose of this research is to examine the functionality in utilizing Random Forest Regression (RFR) Variable Importance (VI) values in characterizing neighborhoods based on the attributes of existing housing units by creating an automated GIS tool. An important concept that has been implemented in the past in real-estate valuation is the concept of Hedonic Price Modeling (HPM), which uses regression techniques to identify the impacts that individual attributes have on the cost of a good in a heterogenous market outside of mere utility. The benefit of this research is to produce a tool that automates the RFR process such …

Natural Fracture Evolution: Investigations Into The Middle Devonian Marcellus Shale, Appalachian Basin, Usa, Natalie Abigail Mitchell
Natural Fracture Evolution: Investigations Into The Middle Devonian Marcellus Shale, Appalachian Basin, Usa, Natalie Abigail Mitchell
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Optimizing recovery from unconventional shale reservoirs has generated considerable research into optimal recovery methods through hydraulic fracturing design and shale reservoir characterization in the development of long-term hydrocarbon producers. Permeability at multiple scales from nanometer-scale pore sizes and nano-darcy permeability to completion-induced fractures defining a 100’s of meter stimulated reservoir volume plays a significant role in hydrocarbon flow during production in shale reservoirs. Preexisting cemented fractures in unconventional shale reservoirs are abundant and preferentially reactivate during induced hydraulic fracturing treatment to create necessary large-scale permeability. While previous investigations have significantly improved our knowledge of shale reservoirs, it has also highlighted …
Use Of Carbonation For Treatment Of Coal Mine Drainage To Increase Limestone Dissolution And Generate Alkalinity, Dietrich Henry Kuhlmann Iv
Use Of Carbonation For Treatment Of Coal Mine Drainage To Increase Limestone Dissolution And Generate Alkalinity, Dietrich Henry Kuhlmann Iv
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Abstract
Use of Carbonation for Treatment of Coal Mine Drainage to Increase Limestone Dissolution and Generate Alkalinity
Dietrich Kuhlmann IV
Anoxic limestone drains (ALDs) are a common component used within passive treatment systems for coal mine drainage (CMD). Contact between limestone aggregate and CMD results in limestone dissolution, producing carbonate alkalinity. Though ALDs are one of the least expensive CMD treatment technologies, alkalinity generation is limited by limestone solubility. This necessitates a long retention time (>12 hours) and sometimes results in net acidic effluent which requires additional alkalinity generation steps downstream. One way to increase calcite dissolution and alkalinity …

Evaluating The Use Of Environmental Tracers To Reduce Conceptual Model Uncertainty Of Hydrogeologic Models, Andrew Nordberg, Jon Graham, W. Payton Gardner
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Environmental tracer concentrations for CFC12, SF6, and tritium are used in groundwater simulations to assess the ability of these tracers to reduce conceptual model uncertainty due to uncertainty of a site’s geologic and recharge characterization. The resulting groundwater simulations are characterized by site-specific hydrologic and geologic data, and with coordination from a field team with years of knowledge about the site. First-order (conceptual) uncertainty is directly addressed by using a stochastic modeling approach for spatial variability of the proposed subsurface configurations. Simulations of environmental tracer concentrations and water levels are used to assess six alternate conceptual models that are based …

Synthetic Aperture Radar Observations At Salar De Pajonales, Chile, Michael A. A. Mcinenly
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Remotely sensed microwave radars provide the spatial and temporal coverage needed to improve our understanding of the relationship between moisture content and salt pan mineralogy and, ultimately, climate variability. Moisture content in the surface and near-surface crusts found in salt pan environments, such as salt pan, has a significant impact on the backscatter values recorded by synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems. This is because moisture affects the dielectric constant and surface roughness of the saline surface, which in turn influences the amount of electromagnetic energy reflected back to the SAR sensor. Changes in backscatter values are attributed to seasonal and …

Salt marshes occur globally across climatic and coastal settings, providing key linkages between terrestrial and marine ecosystems. However, salt marsh science lacks a unifying conceptual framework; consequently, historically well-studied locations have been used as normative benchmarks. To allow for more effective comparisons across the diversity of salt marshes, we developed an integrative salt marsh conceptual framework. We review ecosystem-relevant drivers from global to local spatial scales, integrate these multi-scale settings into a framework, and provide guidance on applying the framework using specific variables on 11 global examples. Overall, this framework allows for appropriate comparison of study sites by accounting for …

Using Soil And Forest Type To Map Bedrock In Nemo, South Dakota, Madison R. Isaac
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Bedrock mapping can be used to locate economic deposits, assess natural disaster (e.g., mass wasting) risk, and decipher the geologic history of a region. This study examines a site at Nemo, South Dakota to assess whether two contrasting types of bedrock produce different soil that result in different types of forest cover. Although bedrock varied, other soil forming factors were uniform. Within an approximately 1 km2 area, quartzite and metagabbro bedrock, ponderosa pine and quaking aspen forests were mapped. The soil above the quartzite bedrock is thinner and sandier and is dominated by ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa). …

Textural And Mineral Analysis Of Pegmatites From The Pala And Mesa Grande Districts In San Diego, California, Gabrielle Potter
Textural And Mineral Analysis Of Pegmatites From The Pala And Mesa Grande Districts In San Diego, California, Gabrielle Potter
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
San Diego pegmatites of the Pala and Mesa Grande mining districts are world renowned for their gem-quality minerals and their Li-bearing mineral phases. Pegmatite genesis, especially in San Diego mines, has been a debated topic since the 1900’s (Morgan and London, 2012). Pegmatite genesis is caused by partial melting processes and fractional crystallization that form granitic melts with high concentrations of rare earth elements (REE), such as lithium. Assessing the exact mineralogy and determining the overall textures can provide insight into the crystallization history of pegmatites. In the San Diego pegmatites, lithium-bearing phases, such as lepidolite and pink elbaite (a …
