Underground Burning Of Jharia Coal Mine (India) And Associated Surface Deformation Using Insar Data, Jungrack Kim, Shih-Yuan Lin, Ramesh P. Singh, Chen-Wei Lan, Hye-Won Yun

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

The underground burning in the Jharia coal mine (JCM) in India is a highly devastating environmental hazard inducing various adverse consequences. In the present study, we carried out time series analyses based on Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) and land surface temperature (LST) to study the environmental risk. First, a permanent scatterer (PS) time series analysis using Sentinel-1 images over three years was performed to detect the spatio-temporal distribution of ground deformation. Comparison of ground thermal anomaly clearly delineated the subsidence spots associated with the oxygen supply to combustion areas. On the contrary, few deformations were mapped showing pronounced uplift …

Sorption Of Metals At The Barite (001)-Water Interface, Inva Braha Sep 2021

Sorption Of Metals At The Barite (001)-Water Interface, Inva Braha

Student Theses

Abstract

Ion desorption processes control the retention of ions, such as Pb2+, at barite surfaces, whereas ion adsorption processes are a likely initial step in the incorporation of divalent cations, such as Sr2+ and Pb2+, into barite. Based on previous studies on samples dominated by flat terraces with relatively few defects, Sr2+ and Pb2+ adsorb and incorporate at the barite (001)-water interface (Bracco et al., 2019; Bracco et al., 2020). Here, I measured how susceptible lead (Pb) is to desorption and the role surface variability plays in its sorption behavior. First, I measured …

Cenomanian–Turonian Oceanic Anoxic Event (Oae2) Imprint On The Northwestern Part Of The Adriatic Carbonate Platform And A Coeval Intra-Platform Basin (Istria And Premuda Island, Croatia), Vlatko Brčić, Bosiljka Glumac, Mihovil Brlek, Ladislav Fuček, Martina Šparica Miko

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

The Cenomanian–Turonian boundary (CTB) on the intra-Tethyan Adriatic Carbonate Platform (AdCP) is generally characterised by a transition between microbially laminated and/or bioclastic limestones to calcisphere-rich massive limestone with bioturbated intervals, organic-rich interbeds, firmgrounds, as well as neptunian dikes, carbonate turbidites, tempestites and slumped structures. Compilation of the results from two study sites in the northwestern part of the AdCP and from previous research (on Istria Peninsula and islands in the Adriatic Sea in Croatia) provides a more complete overview of geological events and paleoenvironmental conditions that transformed the formerly contiguous shallow-marine environments during this time period. For the first time, …

Catastrophic Beach Sand Losses Due To Erosion From Predicted Future Sea Level Rise (0.5–1.0 M), Based On Increasing Submarine Accommodation Spaces In The High-Wave-Energy Coast Of The Pacific Northwest, Washington, Oregon, And Northern California, Usa, Curt D. Peterson, Don Joseph Pettit, Kara E. P. Kingen, Sandy Vanderburgh, Chuck Rosenfeld

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The U.S. Pacific Northwest (PNW) coastline (1000 km) has been analyzed for conditions that could impact beach erosion from potential near-future (100 year) sea level rise (SLR). Heavy mineral analysis of river, beach, and shelf samples (n = 105) establish the sources of the beach deposits. River bedload discharge and intervening estuarine sinks for river sand supplies (n = 31) were normalized to the one century time interval. Twenty-six subcell beaches (657 km in combined length) were surveyed (153 profiles) for beach sand widths (20–412 m) and sand cross-sectional areas (20–1810 m2 ) above wave-cut platforms and/or 0 m tidal …

Shale Softening Based On Pore Network And Laboratory Investigations, Di Zhang Aug 2021

Shale Softening Based On Pore Network And Laboratory Investigations, Di Zhang

Dissertations

This dissertation consists of two major parts: Firstly, experimental investigation of four major shale softening mechanisms and quantifications of structural parameters. Secondly, numerical simulations of nano-scale flow behaviors using the previous experiments determined parameters based on modified pore network modeling.

Hydraulic fracturing is widely applied to economical gas production from shale reservoirs. Still, the gradual swelling of the clay micro/nano-pores due to retained fluid from hydraulic fracturing causes a gradual reduction of gas production. Four different gas-bearing shale samples are investigated to quantify the expected shale swelling due to hydraulic fracturing. These shale samples are subject to heated deionized (DI) …

Mollusc Shells From Neolithic Contexts In The Lake Eyasi Basin, Northern Tanzania, Musa S. Mwitondi, Albert S. Mjandwa, Pastory M. Bushozi Aug 2021

Mollusc Shells From Neolithic Contexts In The Lake Eyasi Basin, Northern Tanzania, Musa S. Mwitondi, Albert S. Mjandwa, Pastory M. Bushozi

Tanzania Journal of Science

The study of the Neolithic period in the Lake Eyasi Basin was dominated by attempts to formulate the area’s chronology, mobility, settlement patterns, subsistence, and cultural capabilities of Neolithic people as attested by domesticated animals, pottery, and lithic artefacts. Occasionally, studies on molluscs were mentioned, but rarely described in detail. Neolithic sites across the Lake Eyasi Basin have yielded remains of both terrestrial (gastropods) and freshwater mollusc shells (mussels). The abundance of mollusc shell remains in the archaeological records of the Lake Eyasi Basin have played a great role in chronological settings, mobility and community integrations, studies of settlement patterns, …

Mineral Liberation: A Case Study For Buzwagi Gold Mine, Alphonce Wikedzi, Thomas Leißner Aug 2021

Mineral Liberation: A Case Study For Buzwagi Gold Mine, Alphonce Wikedzi, Thomas Leißner

Tanzania Journal of Science

Buzwagi Gold Mine (BGM) process plant was designed such that, after secondary grinding, gold and copper are recovered by flotation. However, the flotation circuit had been inefficient, and as a result, cyanidation of flotation tailings is currently conducted to improve gold recovery. The inefficient flotation is suspected to be due to mineralogical variations of ores treated. Hence, mineral liberation characteristics of three ore blends treated by BGM were investigated by automated Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) whereby five fractions (i.e.  -1 +0.5 mm, -0.5 +0.25 mm, -0.25 +0.125 mm, -0.125 +0.063 mm and -0.063 mm) were used. It was found that …

Maintenance Automation Architecture And Electrical Equipment Fault Prediction Method In Tanzania Secondary Distribution Networks, Hadija Mbembati, Kwame Ibwe, Baraka Maiseli Aug 2021

Maintenance Automation Architecture And Electrical Equipment Fault Prediction Method In Tanzania Secondary Distribution Networks, Hadija Mbembati, Kwame Ibwe, Baraka Maiseli

Tanzania Journal of Science

Distribution networks remain the most maintenance-intensive parts of power systems. The implementation of maintenance automation and prediction of equipment fault can enhance system reliability while reducing the overall costs. In Tanzania, however, maintenance automation has not been deployed in secondary distribution networks (SDNs). Instead, traditional methods are used for condition prediction and fault identification of power assets (transformers and power lines). These (manual) methods are costly and time-consuming, and may introduce human-related errors. Motivated by these challenges, this work introduces maintenance automation into the network architecture by implementing effective maintenance and fault identification methods. The proposed method adopts machine learning …

Potency Of Dioscorea Sansibarensis (Dioscoreaceae) Leaf Eluates On Callosobruchus Chinensis, Linnaeus 1758 (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) In The Protection Of Phaseolus Vulgaris (Fabaceae), Godfrey O. Mauti

Tanzania Journal of Science

Post-harvest losses of stored Phaseolus vulgaris to the bean weevil Callosobruchus chinensis have reached levels of significant concern. Governments and health organisations propose the discovery of reliable,  healthy and biodegradable pesticides with higher selectivity and a broad spectrum. This study presents investigations on the activities of Dioscorea sansibarensis leaf extracts on the mortality of C. chinensis and reduction of their egg-laying ability. Laboratory experiments under Completely Randomized Design (CRD) were carried out to determine the mortality and anti-oviposition activity of the vacuum liquid chromatography (VLC) eluates of n-hexane (HE), chloroform (CE), ethyl acetate (EE), n-butanol (BE) and methanol (BE) at …

Investigations Of Trace Element Titanium In Silica Minerals, Zachary Robert Osborne Aug 2021

Investigations Of Trace Element Titanium In Silica Minerals, Zachary Robert Osborne

Dissertations - ALL

Quartz is a common mineral in many igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks because it is stable over a wide range of pressure (P) and temperature (T) conditions; therefore, quartz is an excellent mineral to target for thermobarometric uses. Thermobarometry is the quantitative determination of the pressure (baro-) and temperature (thermo-) conditions at which a natural rock sample reached chemical equilibrium. This dissertation contains three chapters describing mineral synthesis experiments that quantify and define the trace-element solubility behavior of titanium (Ti) in the silica minerals quartz and coesite, to advance the understanding and application of trace-element thermobarometry.Chapter 1 details the experiments …

Evaluating The Controls Of Neogene Exhumation In The Tropical Northern Andes (Colombia), Nicolas Perez Consuegra Aug 2021

Evaluating The Controls Of Neogene Exhumation In The Tropical Northern Andes (Colombia), Nicolas Perez Consuegra

Dissertations - ALL

Understanding how tectonic and climatic forces influence erosion and shape mountains is important to understand the evolution of the landscapes through earth's history. This dissertation aims to determine how do tectonic processes and climate variability interact to shape Earth's tropical mountains. In chapter 1, I studied the Eastern Cordillera of the Northern Andes, a mountain range located in Colombia in the tropics of South America. To obtain exhumation rates, I used thermochronology, which is a method that records—over timescales of millions of years—the rate at which rocks located at great depths within the Earth cool as they are transported to …

Analysis Of Rock Varnish From The Mojave Desert By Handheld Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy, Russell S. Harmon, Daria Khashchevskaya, Michelle Morency, Lewis A. Owen, Morgan Jennings, Jeffrey R. Knott, Jason M. Dortch

Faculty, Staff, and Affiliated Publications--KGS

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a form of optical emission spectroscopy that can be used for the rapid analysis of geological materials in the field under ambient environmental conditions. We describe here the innovative use of handheld LIBS for the in situ analysis of rock varnish. This thinly laminated and compositionally complex veneer forms slowly over time on rock surfaces in dryland regions and is particularly abundant across the Mojave Desert climatic region of east-central California (USA). Following the depth profiling examination of a varnished clast from colluvial gravel in Death Valley in the laboratory, our in situ analysis of …
