Examining Antarctica From A Geodynamic Perspective: Backstripping, Ice Thickness, Tectonics And Erosion, Travis Gary Hayden Jun 2013

Examining Antarctica From A Geodynamic Perspective: Backstripping, Ice Thickness, Tectonics And Erosion, Travis Gary Hayden

Dissertations

I have applied the principles of basin analysis and geodynamics to several cores recovered from on or near the Antarctic continent to answer 2 independent questions about the tectonic evolution of Antarctica; as well as estimate the thickness of the Antarctic Ice Sheet at the Last Glacial Maximum.

I developed, and applied a modification of the backstripping modeling technique to compensate for the loading and erosion of glacial ice at the AND-1B site by combining a backstripping driven inverse model, with a driven ice-load model. This modification allowed me to identify and constrain the timing of major pulses of subsidence …

Exploring Connections Between A Very Large Volume Ignimbrite And An Intracaldera Pluton: Intrusions Related To The Oligocene Wah Wah Springs Tuff, Western Us, Chloe Noelle Skidmore May 2013

Exploring Connections Between A Very Large Volume Ignimbrite And An Intracaldera Pluton: Intrusions Related To The Oligocene Wah Wah Springs Tuff, Western Us, Chloe Noelle Skidmore

Theses and Dissertations

The Wah Wah Springs Tuff and the Wah Wah Springs Intrusive Granodiorite Porphyry(Wah Wah Springs Intrusion) both originated from the Indian Peak caldera complex, which wasa major focus of explosive silicic activity in the middle Cenozoic Great Basin ignimbrite flareup. This caldera formed 30.0 Ma when an estimated 5,900 km3 of crystal-rich dacitic magma erupted to create the Wah Wah Springs Tuff. The Wah Wah Springs Intrusion later intruded the tuff, causing resurgence of the caldera. Field, modal, and geochemical evidence suggest the tuff and intrusion are cogenetic. The mineral assemblages of the two rocks are similar: both include similar …

Detrital Zircon U/Pb Age Determination: Understanding The Provenance Of The Upper Cretaceous Shumagin Formation, Alaska, Carly F. Roe May 2013

Detrital Zircon U/Pb Age Determination: Understanding The Provenance Of The Upper Cretaceous Shumagin Formation, Alaska, Carly F. Roe

Lawrence University Honors Projects

The tectonic evolution of the Chugach-Prince William Terrane (CPW), an accretionary complex along the southern Alaskan margin, has been the subject of much debate. There are two prevailing hypotheses for the location of the CPW at the time of its intrusion by the plutons of the Sanak-Baranof belt, and both require distinctly different source regions for the sediment of the CPW flysch. Therefore, a better understanding of the provenance of these sediments will help constrain the location of the CPW at the time of the deposition of its sediments. This study presents an analysis of new U/Pb detrital zircon, mineralogical …

An Evaluation Of The Source Area For The Former Norges Cleaners Tetrachloroethylene Plume Near Centennial Boulevard And Vine Street, Hays, Ks, Over A 20-Year Span Using Past Data To Estimate The Plume Concentration Reduction, Adam Staab May 2013

An Evaluation Of The Source Area For The Former Norges Cleaners Tetrachloroethylene Plume Near Centennial Boulevard And Vine Street, Hays, Ks, Over A 20-Year Span Using Past Data To Estimate The Plume Concentration Reduction, Adam Staab

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Analyses of monitoring well data from 2001 to 2009 of a perchlorethylene (PCE) pollution plume located in Hays, Kansas were used to assess the current PCE status and to project the plume rate of decline to when remediation will cease or no longer be required. Isoconcentration maps were used to calculate an average rate of concentration reduction. Based on these calculations, I believe the PCE concentration has the potential to be below the 5 μg/L Risk-based Standards for Kansas by 2020 for the study area.

The Geothermal System Near Paisley Oregon: A Tectonomagmatic Framework For Understanding The Geothermal Resource Potential Of Southeastern Oregon, Kyle Aaron Makovsky May 2013

The Geothermal System Near Paisley Oregon: A Tectonomagmatic Framework For Understanding The Geothermal Resource Potential Of Southeastern Oregon, Kyle Aaron Makovsky

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

The tectonic and magmatic framework of southeast Oregon provides the conditions necessary for the existence of geothermal energy resources. However, few detailed studies of geothermal systems in this part of the Basin and Range have been conducted. Young bimodal magmatism and faulting associated with the High Lava Plains coupled with the encroachment of the Basin and Range tectonic province and potentially the Walker Lane have created the structural configuration, heat source, and secondary permeability necessary for geothermal systems in southeast Oregon. The relative contribution of these provinces to the overall tectonomagmatic framework is less well understood. In this study, the …

Age, Provenance, And Structure Of The Weatherby Formation, Eastern Izee Sub-Basin, Blue Mountains Province, Oregon And Idaho, Bryant Douglas Ware

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

The terranes of the Blue Mountains province of eastern Oregon and west-central Idaho provide an important link between the geology of the North American Cordillera exposed in Canada and Alaska in the north and Nevada and California in the south. The Izee basin is a volcanic-rich sedimentary sequence onlapping the volcanic arc and accretionary mélange terranes of the Blue Mountains, and comprises the marine flysch Weatherby Formation at its eastern extent. This study sought to establish the stratigraphic and structural relationships between the Weatherby Formation and the proximal Baker and Olds Ferry terranes. Small-scale mapping, structural measurements, and geochronological data …

Subsurface Stratigraphy And Characterization Of Mississippian (Osagean To Meramecian) Carbonate Reservoirs Of The Northern Anadarko Shelf, North-Central Oklahoma, Brett Robert Wittman May 2013

Subsurface Stratigraphy And Characterization Of Mississippian (Osagean To Meramecian) Carbonate Reservoirs Of The Northern Anadarko Shelf, North-Central Oklahoma, Brett Robert Wittman

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Mississippian carbonate strata of the midcontinent contain prolific oil and gas reservoirs. Production from these carbonates has been primarily from two reservoir types, the Mississippi "chat" and recently denser chert-rich mudstone intervals. The"chat" interval is a high porosity chert residuum associated with the both the Osagean and basal Pennsylvanian unconformity. The distribution of the "chat" reservoir is discontinuous and heterogeneous. Recent horizontal drilling successes have reinvigorated academic and industry interest in the Lower Mississippian. Much of the activity is now targeting lower porosity, cherty, mudstone intervals of the Reeds Spring and Cowley Formations, which were previously considered to be non-economic. …

The Extent Of Wetland Vegetation And Wetness Change At Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge From 1984-2012 Examined Using Landsat Thematic Mapper And Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus Imagery, Jeremy M. Henning May 2013

The Extent Of Wetland Vegetation And Wetness Change At Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge From 1984-2012 Examined Using Landsat Thematic Mapper And Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus Imagery, Jeremy M. Henning

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Wetlands provide functions such as reducing flooding of surrounding areas and acting as a rest stop for migrating birds. Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge in Alabama has a natural wetland and six artificial wetlands that are differentiated by how they are drained. Remote sensing derived normalized difference vegetation index and normalized difference wetness indexes were used to obtain information about vegetation and wetness at the wetlands from 1984-2011. A correlation analysis was performed to assess the degree of association between vegetation and wetness as a function of management practices. An ANOVA and agglomerative hierarchical clustering were performed to assess the degree …

Utilizing A Magnometer To Locate Abandoned Oil Wells In Butler County, Kansas, Christopher D. Neeley May 2013

Utilizing A Magnometer To Locate Abandoned Oil Wells In Butler County, Kansas, Christopher D. Neeley

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Two ground-based magnetometer surveys were conducted on the American Legion Brownfields Targeted Assessment site in El Dorado, Kansas during November 2011, in an attempt to locate two oil and gas wells that were abandoned prior to 1939. The search areas were delineated by Kansas Corporation Commission staff, and prior to the magnetometer surveys, investigated with ground penetrating radar and a metal detector in an unsuccessful attempt to locate casing material or backfilled drilling cellars. The magnetometer surveys yielded several anomalies that were dismissed as cultural noise after the results were compared with field observations. Two anomalies in survey area #1 …

Dendrochronology In Northern Utah: Modeling Sensitivity And Reconstructing Logan River Flows, Eric B. Allen May 2013

Dendrochronology In Northern Utah: Modeling Sensitivity And Reconstructing Logan River Flows, Eric B. Allen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The population centers in northern Utah are highly dependent upon snowpack for drinking water, irrigation, and hydropower. When the snowpack melts in the spring and early summer, it feeds streams draining the Wasatch, Bear River, and Uinta Mountains. The rivers are diverted and dammed to deliver water to the greater Salt Lake metropolitan area. In order to properly allocate this water, managers need to know how much water normally flows in the rivers and the frequency and magnitude of wet and dry periods to expect. However, climate patterns in the region are not well understood and records of streamflows are …

Dissolution Rates Of Amorphous Al- And Fe-Phosphates And Their Relevance To Phosphate Mobility On Mars, Valerie Tu May 2013

Dissolution Rates Of Amorphous Al- And Fe-Phosphates And Their Relevance To Phosphate Mobility On Mars, Valerie Tu

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Phosphate is an essential element for life on Earth, and therefore if life exists or ever existed on Mars it may have required phosphate. Amorphous Al- and Fe-phosphates rapidly precipitate from acidic solutions and amorphous Al-phosphates likely control phosphate concentrations in some natural waters on Earth. Amorphous phases may be even more important on Mars than on Earth, and amorphous phosphates are therefore likely important in the phosphate cycle on Mars. Despite this importance, however, few dissolution rates exist for amorphous Al- and Fe- phosphates. In this study, dissolution rates of amorphous Al- and Fe-phosphates were measured in flow-through reactors …

A Middle To Late Holocene Record Of Arroyo Cut-Fill Events In Kitchen Corral Wash, Southern Utah, William M. Huff May 2013

A Middle To Late Holocene Record Of Arroyo Cut-Fill Events In Kitchen Corral Wash, Southern Utah, William M. Huff

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Arroyos are steeply entrenched channels that form by incision into weakly consolidated valley-fill alluvium. This study attempts to offers clues into the processes behind their formation by dating arroyo sediments using luminescence and radiocarbon techniques. The importance of understanding arroyo formation is due to a possible linkage with decadal to centennial-scale climate fluctuations. In the 1800s and early 1900s, many of the shallow, perennial streams throughout southern Utah that used for a variety of agricultural and domestic uses were incised up to ~30 m into their alluvium by frequent and high-magnitude flood events. The economical and ecological effects of these …

Constraining Ice Advance And Linkages To Paleoclimate Of Two Glacial Systems In The Olympic Mountains, Washington And The Southern Alps, New Zealand, Cianna E. Wyshnytzky

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This thesis investigates glacial sediments in the South Fork Hoh River Valley, Washington and the Lake Hawea Valley, New Zealand that were deposited during the last glacial period. Research objectives were to reconstruct the style and timing of glacier advance and retreat in both areas and to assess the viability of luminescence dating of sediments in glacial environments.

Glaciers are influenced primarily by temperature and precipitation. Valley glaciers, like those in the Olympics Mountains and Southern Alps, are thought to respond relatively rapidly to climate fluctuations in comparison to continental ice sheets. Understanding how these glacial systems responded to past …

Fault Seal Analysis For Co2 Storage: Fault Zone Architecture, Fault Permeability, And Fluid Migration Pathways In Exposed Analogs In Southeastern Utah, David J. Richey May 2013

Fault Seal Analysis For Co2 Storage: Fault Zone Architecture, Fault Permeability, And Fluid Migration Pathways In Exposed Analogs In Southeastern Utah, David J. Richey

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) primarily resulting from the combustion of fossil fuels can be captured and stored by injection into underground porous sandstone reservoirs. This process has been proposed as a method for reducing greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming. Two of the major risks associated with this technology include: 1) upwards migration and leakage of injected fluids along natural fault and fracture networks, and 2) possible induced seismicity (earthquakes) resulting from increasing the pressure in reservoirs and along existing faults.

We use geologic field mapping, petrographic analysis, characterization of the fault zone, analysis of altered …

Southward Continuation Of The San Jacinto Fault Zone Through And Beneath The Extra And Elmore Ranch Left-Lateral Fault Arrays, Southern California, Steven Jesse Thornock May 2013

Southward Continuation Of The San Jacinto Fault Zone Through And Beneath The Extra And Elmore Ranch Left-Lateral Fault Arrays, Southern California, Steven Jesse Thornock

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Clark fault is a significant fault within the southern San Andreas fault system. The Clark fault abruptly ends where it intersects a second, smaller fault that crosses it called the Extra fault zone. In this study we investigate the possibility of the Clark fault continuing beneath and beyond the Extra fault zone. Based on field mapping and other geological data that we present, we determine that the Clark fault continues below the Extra fault and is not evident on the surface. Over time, earthquake slip along the Clark fault has caused the Extra fault zone to rotate in a …

Evaluation Of The Geothermal Potential Of The Snake River Plain, Idaho, Based On Three Exploration Holes, Thomas G. Freeman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The work in this thesis was based on analyzing water samples collected from three exploratory boreholes drilled during Project Hotspot. The water samples were analyzed for their chemical properties. The chemical properties of the water samples were used as a basis for further analysis.

Geophysical logs, mainly temperature logs, were also analyzed for this project. Temperature logs measure temperature in relation to depth within a borehole.

All the analyses were made in order to estimate the geothermal potential of the project areas. The exploratory boreholes were all drilled in different areas and each had unique characteristics. The Mountain Home borehole …

Earthquake Petrology: Linking Fault-Related Deformation To The Earthquake Cycle, Mitchell R. Prante May 2013

Earthquake Petrology: Linking Fault-Related Deformation To The Earthquake Cycle, Mitchell R. Prante

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Faults have a controlling influence on a variety of geologic processes including fluid flow, the mechanical behavior of the crust, and seismicity. The geologic sciences have long recognized that faults generate earthquakes; however, few indicators of ancient earthquakes exist in fault-zones. This dissertation documents several indicators for the preservation of ancient earthquakes in fault-zones including frictional melt (pseudotachylyte), highly-polished fault slip surfaces, and hydrothermal alteration.

These deformation products result from rapid generation of frictional heat during earthquakes. This dissertation also focuses on the seismic potential of continental low-angle normal faults (LANF). We document the preservation of voluminous pseudotachylyte along a …

Cretaceous And Eocene U-Pb Zircon Migmatite Ages From The East Humboldt Range Metamorphic Core Complex, Nevada, Jordan Drew May 2013

Cretaceous And Eocene U-Pb Zircon Migmatite Ages From The East Humboldt Range Metamorphic Core Complex, Nevada, Jordan Drew

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Zircon separates from migmatite samples from the East Humboldt Range (EHR), northern Nevada were U-Pb dated using secondary ionization mass spectrometry. Cathodoluminescence images of zircons show bright anhedral cores with abundant euhedral overgrowths surrounding them.

The overgrowths give U-Pb dates indicating two periods of zircon growth. Inner rims have a Cretaceous age population at 70.6 ± 2.6 Ma. Outer rims give Eocene ages that either fall in to a single-age population at 45 ± 1.3 Ma or are part of a range from 41-31 Ma. Discordant zircon cores have upper intercepts between 1.8 -1.0 Ga.

Cretaceous and Eocene ages are …

Understanding The Middle Miocene Climatic Optimum: Evaluation Of Deuterium Values (Δd) Related To Precipitation And Temperature, Colin Gannon Apr 2013

Understanding The Middle Miocene Climatic Optimum: Evaluation Of Deuterium Values (Δd) Related To Precipitation And Temperature, Colin Gannon

Honors Projects in Science and Technology

The Middle Miocene Climate Optimum was a unique warming period in the Earth’s geologic history, when a high global mean annual temperature was accompanied by a relatively low global CO2 concentration. Hydrogen isotopic signals (specifically molecular δD, the ratio of deuterium to hydrogen) from lipids of fossils and sediments offer intrinsic insights into precipitation of ancient climates. Using samples collected from known Middle Miocene deposits, we measured δD of n-alkanes extracted from well-preserved plant and sediment samples from varying latitudes across the Northern Hemisphere, and then analyzed the data through a zonally averaged precipitation and evaporation climate model. The reduced …

Co And Cr Adsorption On Maghemite, Quartz, And Maghemite-Quartz Mixtures, Amy Troy Apr 2013

Co And Cr Adsorption On Maghemite, Quartz, And Maghemite-Quartz Mixtures, Amy Troy

Honors Theses

In aquifers and other natural systems, single mineral systems are rare. Solids are commonly heterogeneous, containing multiple minerals, and mineral interactions are expected. Mineral interactions such as formation of coatings and physical blocking of adsorption sites have the potential to significantly change the adsorption of ions onto solids. To investigate such interactions, batch experiments using Co(II) or Cr(VI) were conducted to compare adsorption edges of these sorbates on pure and mixed mineral systems. Specifically, sorption of 10-5 or 10-6 M Co(II) and Cr(VI) was measured as a function of pH, with a background electrolyte concentration of 0.01 M …

Facies And Reservoir Characterization Of The Permian White Rim Sandstone, Black Box Dolomite, And Black Dragon Member Of The Triassic Moenkopi Formation For Co2 Storage And Sequestration At Woodside Field, East-Central Utah, Walter Andrew Harston Apr 2013

Facies And Reservoir Characterization Of The Permian White Rim Sandstone, Black Box Dolomite, And Black Dragon Member Of The Triassic Moenkopi Formation For Co2 Storage And Sequestration At Woodside Field, East-Central Utah, Walter Andrew Harston

Theses and Dissertations

Geologic sequestration of anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) greenhouse gas emissions is an engineering solution that potentially reduces CO2 emissions released into the atmosphere thereby limiting their effect on climate change. This study focuses on Woodside field as a potential storage and sequestration site for CO2 emissions. The Woodside field is positioned on a doubly plunging, asymmetrical anticline on the northeast flank of the San Rafael Swell. Particular focus will be placed on the Permian White Rim Sandstone, Black Box Dolomite and Black Dragon Member of the Triassic Moenkopi Formation as the reservoir/seal system to store and sequester CO2 at Woodside …

Paleoecology Of Nebraska’S Ungulates During The Eocene–Oligocene Climate Transition, Grant S. Boardman Apr 2013

Paleoecology Of Nebraska’S Ungulates During The Eocene–Oligocene Climate Transition, Grant S. Boardman

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The White River Group (WRG) preserves the Eocene-Oligocene climate transition (EOCT), an interval of global cooling and drying during the onset of Antarctic glaciation. In the Great Plains, a shift from forested conditions to drier woodland-savanna biomes is hypothesized to have occurred at this time. I test this hypothesis through the analyses of several paleoenvironmental proxies on the teeth of 12 WRG ungulate species: stable carbon and oxygen isotopes from tooth enamel, and mesowear and microwear texture. The EOCT shift toward more open habitats and lower vegetation density under drying climates should have resulted in an increase in mean carbon …

Cave Taphonomy, Amberly Rounds Apr 2013

Cave Taphonomy, Amberly Rounds

The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research

In lieu of an abstract, below is the first paragraph of the paper.

Savrda and Lewis Gastaldo define taphonomy as the paleontological subdiscipline which is concerned with the process responsible for any organism becoming part of the fossil record, and how these processes influence information in the fossil record (Gastaldo 1996, 1). Lee Lyman goes on to state that even more so it is the science dealing with the laws of burial or embedding (Lyman l). In this paper taphonomy will be discussed along with its use in cave settings mainly during the Pleistocene era. Mary C. Steiner makes it …
