Evolution Of The Southern Kenya Rift From Miocene To Present With A Focus On The Magadi Area, Alexandria L. Guth
Evolution Of The Southern Kenya Rift From Miocene To Present With A Focus On The Magadi Area, Alexandria L. Guth
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
The Kenya (a.k.a., Gregory) Rift is a geologically active area located within the eastern branch of the larger East African Rift System (EARS). The study area is located in the southern Kenya Rift between 1° South and the Kenya-Tanzania border (covering approximately 1.5 square degrees, semi-centered on Lake Magadi) and is predominantly filled with extrusive igneous rocks (mostly basalts, phonolites and trachytes) of Miocene age or younger. Sediments are thin, less than 1.5Ma, and are confined to small grabens. The EARS can serve both as an analogue for ancient continental rifting and as a modern laboratory to observe the geologic …

Paleoenvironmental Reconstructions From Cave Sediments Of The Moravian Karst, Czech Republic / By Pavel Sroubek., Pavel Sroubek
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
This thesis presents a paleoclimatic/paleoenvironmental study conducted on clastic cave sediments of the Moravian Karst, Czech Republic. The study is based on environmental magnetic techniques, yet a wide range of other scientific methods was used to obtain a clearer picture of the Quaternary climate. My thesis also presents an overview of the significance of cave deposits for paleoclimatic reconstructions, explains basic environmental magnetic techniques and offers background information on the study area – a famous karst region in Central Europe with a rich history.
In Kulna Cave magnetic susceptibility variations and in particular variations in pedogenic susceptibility yield a detailed …

The Non-Synchronous Response To Rabots Glaciar And Storglaciaren, Northern Sweden, To Recent Climate Change: A Comparative Study, Keith A. Brugger
Geology Publications
Rabots Glaciar and Storglaciaren, two small valley glaciers in the Swedish Arctic, have not behaved synchronously in response to recent climate change. Both glaciers advanced late in the 19th century and then began to retreat in response to an approximately 1 degree C warming that occurred around 1910. By the mid-1980s the terminus and volume of Storglaciaren had essentially stabilized, so it may have completed its response to the earlier warming. In contrast, ongoing thinning and retreat of Rabots Glaciar are substantial and suggest its response time is considerably longer. A time-dependent numerical model was used to investigate each glacier’s …

We measured thalli diameters of the lichen Rhizocarpon subgenus Rhizocarpon on 48 individual lobes of 18 rock glaciers and rock glacier complexes in the Elk Mountains and Sawatch Range of central Colorado. Cumulative probability distribution and K-means clustering analyses were used to separate lichen thalli measurements into statistically-distinct groups, each interpreted as representing a discrete episode of rock glacier activity driven by an interval of cooler climate. Lichen ages for these episodes were assigned using a growth curve developed for Rhizocarpon geographicum in the nearby Front Range. An early Neoglacial episode, ca. 3080 yr BP, is correlative to other glacial …
1991: Pinatubo Eruption, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee
1991: Pinatubo Eruption, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Date: June 12-16, 1991
Place: Luzon, Philippines
Result: About 350 dead (mostly from collapsed roofs); extensive damage to homes, bridges, irrigation-canal dikes, and cropland; 20 million tons of sulfur dioxide spewed into the stratosphere up to an elevation of 15.5 miles
Prior to the 1991 eruption, Pinatubo had the appearance of a steep, domelike spheroid that rose about 2,297 feet (700 meters) above a gently sloping apron made of pyroclastic and epiclastic materials. Such a volcano belongs to the class of stratocones, of which such 803 well-known exemplars as Fuji and Mayon are considerably larger than Pinatubo. The extensive pyroclastic …

I Sinkholes Nella Letteratura Scientifica Internazionale: Una Breve Rassegna, Con Particulare Riferimento Agli Stati Uniti D'America, Lee J. Florea, Mario Parise
Earth, Environmental, and Atmospheric Sciences Faculty Publications

Loess Deposits, Origins And Properties, Daniel R. Muhs
Loess Deposits, Origins And Properties, Daniel R. Muhs
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Loess is an eolian (windblown) sediment that is an important archive of Quaternary climate changes. It may provide one of the most complete terrestrial records of interglacial–glacial cycles. Loess is unusual as a record of Quaternary climate change because it is one of the few sediments that is deposited directly from the atmosphere. Thus, it is a geologic deposit that contains a record of atmospheric circulation and can be used to reconstruct synoptic-scale paleoclimatology. Loess is also unusual in that it can be dated directly using ‘trapped electron’ or luminescence methods that require only the sediment itself. Commonly, loess deposits …
Groundwater Quality In Kentucky: Atrazine, Bart Davidson, R. Stephen Fisher
Groundwater Quality In Kentucky: Atrazine, Bart Davidson, R. Stephen Fisher
Information Circular--KGS
Atrazine is an organic herbicide used for selective control of broadleaf and grassy weeds in crops such as corn, soybeans, sorghum, sugarcane, macadamia nuts, pineapples, pine trees, grasslands, and roses. Atrazine does not harm the crops, which can absorb and metabolize the herbicide, thereby removing the toxins. It controls targeted plants by inhibiting photosynthesis (Wilkes University Center for Environmental Quality, 2003). Atrazine is a white, odorless, crystalline powder that dissolves readily in water and does not occur naturally. It is widely used because of its low cost and ability to reduce crop losses from weed interference.

Adaptive Data-Driven Models For Estimating Carbon Fluxes In The Northern Great Plains, Bruce K. Wylie, Eugene A. Fosnight, Tagir G. Gilmanov, Albert B. Frank, Jack A. Morgan, Marshall R. Haferkamp, Tilden P. Meyers
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Rangeland carbon fluxes are highly variable in both space and time. Given the expansive areas of rangelands, how rangelands respond to climatic variation, management, and soil potential is important to understanding carbon dynamics. Rangeland carbon fluxes associated with Net Ecosystem Exchange (NEE) were measured from multiple year data sets at five flux tower locations in the Northern Great Plains. These flux tower measurements were combined with 1-km2 spatial data sets of Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), temperature, precipitation, seasonal NDVI metrics, and soil characteristics. Flux tower measurements were used to train and select variables for …
Trace Element Distribution In Agate: Open Versus Closed System Formation, Michelle Leanna Tebbe
Trace Element Distribution In Agate: Open Versus Closed System Formation, Michelle Leanna Tebbe
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Agate is a silica-rich rock that preserves a record of ancient hydrology and water/rock interaction. However, there is little consensus on how agate forms. Two endmember formation models exist for agate hosted by basalt and are tested here by trace element investigation of agate samples from Brazil, Germany, and Washington, USA. Trace element abundances were analyzed by laser ablation ICP-MS and the data indicate crystallization in a closed system, at least on the scale of analysis in thin-section. Field data, X-ray diffraction data, and stable isotope analyses indicate that ~50 Ma agate from central Washington formed from heated meteoric water. …
Ichnofacies, Ichnocoenoses, And Ichnofabrics Of Quaternary Shallow-Marine To Dunal Tropical Carbonates: A Model And Implications, H. Allen Curran
Ichnofacies, Ichnocoenoses, And Ichnofabrics Of Quaternary Shallow-Marine To Dunal Tropical Carbonates: A Model And Implications, H. Allen Curran
Geosciences: Faculty Publications
A model of five ichnocoenoses within the Skolithos and Psilonichnus ichnofacies characterizes the modern, Holocene, and Pleistocene coastal-carbonate depositional environments and limestones of the Bahamas, as well as the Miami Limestone of south Florida. The subtidal to intertidal ichnocosnoses of the Skolithos ichnofacies are dominated by trace-making activities and trace fossils of callianassid shrimp, which can create distinctive and maximum ichnofabrics. Fossil Upogebia vasquezi burrows found in intertidal calcarenites and burrows of the trace fossil Psilonichnus upsilon, most common in beach backshore beds, have excellent potential as stratigraphic markers and can be used as indicators of past sea-level positions. …

Paleoenvironmental Reconstruction Of The Middle Eocene Trieste-Pazin Basin (Croatia) From Benthic Foraminiferal Assemblages, Sanja ŽIvkovic, Bosiljka Glumac
Geosciences: Faculty Publications
Foraminiferal assemblages from four stratigraphic sections of the Trieste-Pazin basin in central Istria, Croatia (southwestern Tethyan realm) were investigated to reconstruct paleoenvironmental conditions and to determine the age of these deposits. The following five Middle Eocene planktonic foraminiferal zones were identified from the range and frequency of foraminiferal species: Globigerinatheka kugleri/Morozovella aragonensis Zone (E9), Acarinina topilensis Zone (E10), Morozovelloides lehneri Zone (E11), Orbulinoides beckmanni Zone (E12), and Morozovelloides crassatus Zone (E13). A data set of benthic foraminifera relative frequency has been subjected to R- and Q-mode cluster analyses to demonstrate the linkage between taxa distribution and paleoenvironmental gradients. Benthic foraminiferal …

Sedimentation Patterns In A Stabilized Migratory Inlet, Blind Pass, Florida, Ping Wang, David K. Tidwell, Tanya Beck, Nicholas C. Kraus
Geology Faculty Publications
The shoaling rate in Blind Pass entrance channel approximately equals the net southward longshore sediment transport rate. Most of the shoaling occurs along the northern side of the channel. Flow measurements and numerical modeling reveal that the ebb current is approximately twice as strong in the thalweg along the south side as compared to the rest of the channel. In contrast, the flood current is mainly uniform across the inlet and is stronger than the ebb flow over the northern portion. This flow-velocity distribution induced by a nearly 90-deg bend of the channel contributes to the shoaling pattern. Two years …

Data Report: Laboratory Testing Of Longshore Sand Transport By Waves And Currents; Morphology Change Behind Headland Structures, Mark B. Gravens, Ping Wang
Geology Faculty Publications
Data from five series of movable bed laboratory experiments are presented herein. These experiments were conducted in the Largescale Sediment Transport Facility at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center, Vicksburg, MS. The data collected from these experiments are being used to improve longshore sand transport relationships under the combined influence of waves and currents and the enhancement of predictive numerical models of beach morphology evolution, in particular, with respect to modeling of tombolo development at detached breakwates and T-groins. These data were instrumental in the development and validation of GENESIS-T (Hanson et al. 2006) an enhanced version of …

Kentucky Structural Contours From Digitally Vectorized Geologic Quadrangles, Kentucky Geological Survey
Research Data--KGS
This dataset includes geologic stuctural contours of varying datums across Kentucky in shapefile format. These structural contours are compiled from structural contour layers published as a part of the individual Digitally Vectorized Geologic Quadrangles (DVGQ) datasets (by the Kentucky Geologic Survey: https://kgs.uky.edu/kygeode/services/pubs/?pubtype=DVGQ&searchtype=pubcategory). The original structural contours were mapped on the 7.5-minute (1:24,000 scale) series geologic maps published during the Kentucky geologic mapping program (Kentucky Geological Survey - U.S. Geological Survey from 1960 to 1989: https://kgs.uky.edu/kygeode/services/pubs/?pubtype=GQ&searchtype=pubcategory). The digital contours were subsequently digitized as a part of the DVGQ datasets during the geologic digital mapping program at KGS (1996 – 2007). Contoured …
