Grassy Flat Canyon, a south tributary of Logan Canyon 4.4 miles from Logan, exhibits several geomorphic features related to the geology of Logan Canyon. Because of its extensive use and close association with Logan …

The Lower Devonian Water Canyon Formation Of Northeastern Utah, Michael E. Taylor May 1963

The Lower Devonian Water Canyon Formation Of Northeastern Utah, Michael E. Taylor

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In 1948 Williams subdivided the Jefferson Formation of northeastern Utah into two formations. The upper formation was referred to as the Late Devonian Jefferson Formation and the lower formation the Early Devonian Water Canyon Formation (Williams, 1948, p. 1138). Since that time detailed study of the Water Canyon Formation has not been made. It is the purpose of this investigation to describe in detail the lithology and paleontology of the formation and their implication as to the environment of deposition of Early Devonian time in northeastern Utah.

The Salt Lake Group In Cache Valley, Utah And Idaho, Robert D. Adamson May 1955

The Salt Lake Group In Cache Valley, Utah And Idaho, Robert D. Adamson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Fluvial and lacustrine sediments of great thickness accumulated in the intermountain basins of the western United States during Tertiary time. The Salt Lake group in northern Utah and parts of surrounding states is a conspicuous stratigraphic unit of these basins. The "beds of light color" in Morgan Valley in the Wasatch Mountains of northern Utah were named the "Salt Lake group" by Hayden (1869) because of similar occurrences in Salt Lake Valley and because he reasoned that the succession could be divided into formations. Similar rocks crop out in Ogden Valley, north of Morgan Valley, and in Cache Valley, Utah …

Laboratory Tests On Gravelly Material For Use In The Pervious Zones Of Newton Dam, Newton Project, Utah, W.G. Holtz Nov 1943

Laboratory Tests On Gravelly Material For Use In The Pervious Zones Of Newton Dam, Newton Project, Utah, W.G. Holtz

Elusive Documents

A compaction test was performed on the soil (-1/2") material, and mechanical analysis, specific gravity, and percolation-consolidation test was made in a large (19&1/2" diameter) percolator, cylinder and the material was well compacted into the cylinder. A consolidating load equivalent to a 20-foot fill was applied. Because it was believed that some of the fine sand might be transported through the gravel and rock by the percolating water, a 14-mesh screen and a 2-inch later of clear fine gravel (3/16" - 3/8") was placed over the gravelly material being tested. After the percolation-consolidation test was completed, the screen and fine …

The Dry Lake Section Of The Brazer Foundation, James S. Yolton May 1943

The Dry Lake Section Of The Brazer Foundation, James S. Yolton

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Dry Lake section of the Brazer formation, totalling 3100 feet in thickness, is an excellent exposure containing an abundance of fossils many of which are well preserved. The fauna indicates that the formation is to be correlated with the Upper Iowan and Chester series of the type Mississippian system in the Mississippi Valley section. Substantial fossil evidence indicates the following correlation for the Brazer formation members. The C unit represents the western equivalent of the Middle Meramec group, i.e., the Salem and St. Louis limestones. The D member is decidedly Ste. Genevieve in general faunal aspects but, because of …

Phosphate Deposits In Western Summit, Wasatch, Salt Lake, Morgan, And Weber Counties, Utah, Alvin M. Hanson May 1942

Phosphate Deposits In Western Summit, Wasatch, Salt Lake, Morgan, And Weber Counties, Utah, Alvin M. Hanson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Phosphate deposits in the western United States have been the subject of considerable discussion in the last decade, and during the last few years much interest has been aroused in them. Phosphate was first discovered in this area in 1889, but it was not until 1906 that the United States Government took active interest in the study of these deposits. The investigation by the government of the occurrence of western phosphate was begun by Weeks and Ferrier (10), and later carried on by others. On December 9, 1908 the western phosphate reserve was created and many acres of land were …

Cambrian Stratigraphy In The Northern Wasatch Region, George Burke Maxey May 1941

Cambrian Stratigraphy In The Northern Wasatch Region, George Burke Maxey

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

An exhaustive field study of the Cambrian stratigraphy of the northern Wasatch region indicates that in addition to the Blacksmith Fork section there are two complete and better exposed middle and upper sections. Several other good exposures of the lower Middle Cambrian section have been studied in detail. The Spence shale is found to be a member low in the Langston, not the basal member of the Ute. Relative ages of the Spence shale and Ptarmigania faunas have been determined. Other Cambrian faunal zones have been discovered and are discussed. Paleontologic evidence suggests that the Nounan formation is of Upper …

Glaciation In The Logan Quadrangle, Utah, J. Llewellyn Young May 1939

Glaciation In The Logan Quadrangle, Utah, J. Llewellyn Young

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

That the higher valleys of the Wasatch Mountains were occupied by Pleistocene glaciers has long been known. King, Hague, and Emmons, geologists of the Fortieth Parallel Survey, the first to undertake a systematic study of any part of the Wasatch Mountains, recognized this fact and their report includes a map which shows in a rough way the extent of the glaciated areas in the Central Wasatch (11 ). In 1909 Atwood (1) made a detailed study of the glacial features of the Central Wasatch in connection with his study of glaciation in the Uinta Mountains. He mapped the deposits of …

The Geology Of A Part Of The Bear River Range And Some Relationships That It Bears With The Rest Of The Range, Vic E. Peterson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The structure of the western three or four miles of the Bear River range east of Logan, Utah, has many times been alluded to in papers written locally on Cache Valley and the related ranges. There has not however, ever been, to the author's knowledge, an investigation made of this portion of the range for the express purpose of determining its exact structure. Although the area specifically covered by this present investigation is greatly inadequate to base the whole west range structure on, the author believes that the facts brought to light by the specific study of this area, added …

The Devonian Of The Bear River Range, Utah, I. Lavell Cooley May 1928

The Devonian Of The Bear River Range, Utah, I. Lavell Cooley

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The geological column in northern Utah has had very little detailed study. Those who have made reports on this section have done so only in a very general way, making no detailed sections of any part of the column, excepting that of the Cambrian made by Walcott.1 Other work has been done by Mansfield2 in southeastern Idaho and a general section of the Devonian made in Green Canyon, Bear River Range, Utah by Kindle.3

Due to the lack of any detailed work of this nature being done in the Bear River Range, suggested the matter of making …

Bulletin No. 134 - The Nitric Nitrogen Content In The Country Rock, Robert Stewart, William Peterson Jun 1914

Bulletin No. 134 - The Nitric Nitrogen Content In The Country Rock, Robert Stewart, William Peterson

UAES Bulletins

In many arid sections of Western America there have been reported marked accumulations of nitrates in the cultivated soil. Hilgard,(1) who was the first to observe these accumulations, believed that the nitrates are being formed at the present time by the rapid nitrification of the organic matter contained in the soil. In Colorado there has been considerable trouble with orchards dying; the death of the trees in some cases has been attributed to the excessive accumulations of nitrates in the cultivated soil. These accumulations are due, according to Dr. Headden,(2) to the fixation of atmospheric nitrogen by bacteria now at …

Bulletin No. 38 - Preliminary Report On Seepage Water And The Underflow Of Rivers, Samuel Fortier Feb 1895

Bulletin No. 38 - Preliminary Report On Seepage Water And The Underflow Of Rivers, Samuel Fortier

UAES Bulletins

Into a box holding one cubic foot, or seven and one-half gallons of dry sand, one can usually pour from two to three gallons of water without causing any overflow. If the particles of sand were of the same size and cubical in form, they could be packed into a solid mass; and a cubic foot, instead of weighing about 100 pounds--the average weight of dry quartz sand--would then weigh about 165 pounds. But sand grains are irregular in form, and come in contact with adjacent grains only at particular points, thus enclosing spaces or voids, which in dry sand …
