3d Seismic Analysis And Characterization Of A Stacked Turbidite Channel: Niger Delta Complex, Anthony Luna
3d Seismic Analysis And Characterization Of A Stacked Turbidite Channel: Niger Delta Complex, Anthony Luna
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
A stacked turbidite channel was interpreted from 3D seismic data acquired in the Niger Delta off the west coast of Africa. In offshore environments, such as the Niger Delta, submarine canyons provide a conduit for currents to transport large sediment loads to form stacked turbidites. Turbidite channels are typically convoluted deposits and contain sands that are potential reservoir targets of hydrocarbon exploration. The internal characteristics of these turbidites are often complex and difficult to interpret accurately. This study characterizes the morphology of a stacked turbidite deposit by describing key features that are commonly found in turbidite channels, including: channel sinuosity, …
Studying The Relationship Between Mud/Salt Flat Habitat And Shorebird Abundance At Two Wetland Areas Using Landsat, Dustin Reagan
Studying The Relationship Between Mud/Salt Flat Habitat And Shorebird Abundance At Two Wetland Areas Using Landsat, Dustin Reagan
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
The objective of this project was to determine the degree and direction of association between the amount of mud/salt flat area and shorebird abundance during spring and early summer. This study used Landsat 5 to indirectly measure mudflat and salt flat areas at two wetland complexes within Kansas over a period of several years (1991-2008). These measurements were compared to shorebird surveys conducted by several individuals at both Quivira National Wildlife Refuge and Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Area. A correlation analysis showed that significant relationships exist between mud/salt flat area and the abundance of certain shorebird species. Correlation coefficients for individual …
An Evaluation Of The Source Area For The Former Norges Cleaners Tetrachloroethylene Plume Near Centennial Boulevard And Vine Street, Hays, Ks, Over A 20-Year Span Using Past Data To Estimate The Plume Concentration Reduction, Adam Staab
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
Analyses of monitoring well data from 2001 to 2009 of a perchlorethylene (PCE) pollution plume located in Hays, Kansas were used to assess the current PCE status and to project the plume rate of decline to when remediation will cease or no longer be required. Isoconcentration maps were used to calculate an average rate of concentration reduction. Based on these calculations, I believe the PCE concentration has the potential to be below the 5 μg/L Risk-based Standards for Kansas by 2020 for the study area.
The Extent Of Wetland Vegetation And Wetness Change At Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge From 1984-2012 Examined Using Landsat Thematic Mapper And Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus Imagery, Jeremy M. Henning
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
Wetlands provide functions such as reducing flooding of surrounding areas and acting as a rest stop for migrating birds. Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge in Alabama has a natural wetland and six artificial wetlands that are differentiated by how they are drained. Remote sensing derived normalized difference vegetation index and normalized difference wetness indexes were used to obtain information about vegetation and wetness at the wetlands from 1984-2011. A correlation analysis was performed to assess the degree of association between vegetation and wetness as a function of management practices. An ANOVA and agglomerative hierarchical clustering were performed to assess the degree …
Utilizing A Magnometer To Locate Abandoned Oil Wells In Butler County, Kansas, Christopher D. Neeley
Utilizing A Magnometer To Locate Abandoned Oil Wells In Butler County, Kansas, Christopher D. Neeley
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
Two ground-based magnetometer surveys were conducted on the American Legion Brownfields Targeted Assessment site in El Dorado, Kansas during November 2011, in an attempt to locate two oil and gas wells that were abandoned prior to 1939. The search areas were delineated by Kansas Corporation Commission staff, and prior to the magnetometer surveys, investigated with ground penetrating radar and a metal detector in an unsuccessful attempt to locate casing material or backfilled drilling cellars. The magnetometer surveys yielded several anomalies that were dismissed as cultural noise after the results were compared with field observations. Two anomalies in survey area #1 …

The researched area covers the extent of the Keller 3D seismic survey [2 mi2 (5.2 km2)] and is located approximately 12 miles northeast of the city of Hays, Kansas and NW of Ellis and SW of Rooks counties, Kansas. Eight producing oil wells along with one dry hole are located within the research area. This study is focused on the Cambrian-Ordovician Arbuckle Group which is the principal oil bearing reservoir within the research area and in the region. Interpretation of the Keller 3-D seismic data, well-log correlation and a study and description of the drilling samples suggest that the Arbuckle …
Remote Sensing Analysis Of Hydrological Functionality Of Playa Wetlands Using Landsat Tm/Etm+ Data, Benjamin F. Grover
Remote Sensing Analysis Of Hydrological Functionality Of Playa Wetlands Using Landsat Tm/Etm+ Data, Benjamin F. Grover
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
A playa wetland’s ability to retain moisture and water has the greatest influence on the ecological and hydrological functionality of the playa. In this project, Landsat TM/ETM+ satellite imagery was analyzed to determine whether it could be used to detect hydrological functionality of playa wetlands based on their temporal ability to retain soil moisture and water. The project consisted of a ground truth study in which soil moisture, water content, and vegetation data was gathered from the area and related to the satellite imagery pixel values. With this data, a maximum likelihood classifier was created using the mean pixel values …
Using Landsat Thematic Mapper Satellite Imagery Assessing And Mapping Trophic State In Cheney Reservoir, Kansas, Dingnan Lu
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
Eutrophication is a major inland water problem that is researched by many environmentalists and hydrologists. A eutrophic inland water body can cause many negative water problems, such as taste and odor, biotoxin, and low dissolved oxygen. Many previous studies were effective based on using remote sensing to evaluate water body trophic state. In this study, the Cheney Reservoir is selected as an object to test the performance of using remote sensing, specifically the Landsat Thematic Mapper sensor, to evaluate the trophic state of a reservoir. Based on Landsat TM imagery, the chlorophyll a concentration is estimated to be used to …
Mammalian Fauna From The Fullerton Gravel Pit (Ogallala Group, Late Miocene), Morton County, Kansas, Michael Anthony Calvello
Mammalian Fauna From The Fullerton Gravel Pit (Ogallala Group, Late Miocene), Morton County, Kansas, Michael Anthony Calvello
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
The Fullerton Gravel Pit, Morton County, Kansas is one of many sites in western Kansas at which the Ogallala Group crops out. The Ogallala Group was deposited primarily by streams flowing from the Rocky Mountains. Evidence of water transport is observable at the Fullerton Gravel Pit through the presence of allochthonous clasts, cross-bedding, pebble alignment, and fossil breakage and subsequent rounding. Fluvial mechanisms also played an important role in the distribution of fossil material. When the fossils from the Fullerton Gravel Pit are placed in Voorhies Groups, it appears that a majority of them were removed from suspension gradually and …
Spatial Analysis Of A Bioterrorist Attack On Four Major United States Cities Using An Aerosolized Hemorrhagic Fever Virus, Kathryn Prinslow
Spatial Analysis Of A Bioterrorist Attack On Four Major United States Cities Using An Aerosolized Hemorrhagic Fever Virus, Kathryn Prinslow
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
Before the attack on September 11,2001, the United States was very vulnerable to a biological attack. Since then, those responsible for the security of the United States Homeland Security have become more aware of the country's vulnerability. Biological agents have the potential to give small groups of people unprecedented power to terrorize, as indicate by the "Amerithrax" attack in 2001, and of all of these agents, none have more potential for destruction than Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever (EHF). This research uses one of the deadliest viruses that have not been eradicated to identify the number of fatalities in an outbreak affecting …

The Mammals And Paleoindian Artifact From The Feaster Sand Pit, Late Pleistocene (Wisconsin)-Early Holocene, Of Cowley County (Southeastern), Kansas, Miranda L. Lucas
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
Over 100 fossil remains of late Pleistocene (Wisconsin)-early Holocene mammals, including one modified by Paleoindians into an arrow shaft straightener were recovered from the Feaster sand pit in the southwestern part of Cowley County, Kansas. Taxa identified to species include Procyon lotor (Linnaeus), Mammut Americanum (Kerr), Mammuthus columbi (Falconer), Mammuthus jeffersonii (Osborn), Equus scotti (Gidley), Equus conversidens (Owen), Camelops hesternus (Leidy), Antilocapra americana (Ord), and Bison antiquus (Ledy). The Feaster sand pit is thought to be late Pleistocene (Wisconsin) to early Holocene in age due to the high co-occurrence of mammals that are similar to the taxa of known late …
An Allosaurus From The Morrison Formation (Late Jurassic) Of Converse County, Wyoming, Dennis D. Roth
An Allosaurus From The Morrison Formation (Late Jurassic) Of Converse County, Wyoming, Dennis D. Roth
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
I describe a partial skeleton of a theropod from the Later Jurassic Morrison Formation of Converse County, Wyoming. Collected material included 17 vertebrae, three ribs, two associated left metatarsals and an incomplete ilium of an Allosaurus in a gray silty-mudstone containing conchostraca. Several vertebrae are deformed with transverse processes broken and pressed against the neural spine, or twisted transverse processes from lateral or dorso-venteral compression. The material has evidence of erosion prior to deposition, as well as during postfossilization. I propose the deformation of the vertebrae is due to a demineralization of the bones. The flattened surfaces appear to have …
Spatial Similarities And Differences Of Attributes Of Three Subwatersheds Within The Middle Smoky Hill River Watershed And Their Relationship To Instream Total Suspended Solids, Dustin Fross
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
The objective of this study was to spatially analyze the attributes of three subwatersheds, Hydrological Unit Code 12 (HUC 12), of the Middle Smoky Hill River Watershed in west-central Kansas and relate the variances of the attributes to the concentrations of total suspended solids (TSS) entering the Smoky Hill River during storm events. This was accomplished by comparing land cover, including cropland, grassland, and urban factors; agricultural practices, such as tillage methods, condition of terraces, and the presence of grass waterways; geomorphology, including soil types, topography, and visible erosion; and lastly, precipitation variance. The three HUC 12s that were studied …

C-Band Sar Backscatter Characteristics Of Arctic Sea And Land Ice During Winter, Konrad Steffen, John Heinrichs
C-Band Sar Backscatter Characteristics Of Arctic Sea And Land Ice During Winter, Konrad Steffen, John Heinrichs
Geosciences Faculty Publications
Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data has become an important tool for studies of polar regions, due to high spatial resolution even during the polar night and under cloudy skies. We have studied the temporal variation of sea and land ice backscatter of twenty-four SAR images from the European Remote Sensing satellite (ERS-1) covering an area in Lady Ann Strait and Jones Sound, Nunavut, from January to March 1992. The presence of fast ice in Jones Sound and glaciers and ice caps on the surrounding islands provides an ideal setting for temporal backscatter studies of ice surfaces. Sample regions for eight …

Reflections Of A Naturalist: Papers Honoring Professor Eugene D. Fleharty, Jerry R. Choate
Fort Hays Studies Series
Science and academia tend to be dominated by persons who are utterly brilliant, or who are proficient at self-promotion, or who are willing to sacrifice their personal lives and work twice as hard as their peers, or who exhibit some combination of these attributes. Occasionally, however, someone comes along who is just "ordinary" compared with academic overachievers but whose accomplishments far exceed reasonable expectations. Eugene D. Fleharty is such a person. Although he is extraordinarily bright, few would describe him as utterly brilliant. He has never been inclined to "toot his own horn" or otherwise promote himself. And, although he …

Stratigraphy, Paleontology And Paleobiogeography Of Lower Vertebrates From The Cedar Mountain Formation (Lower Cretaceous), Emery County, Utah, Michael L. Pomes
Stratigraphy, Paleontology And Paleobiogeography Of Lower Vertebrates From The Cedar Mountain Formation (Lower Cretaceous), Emery County, Utah, Michael L. Pomes
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
Where present, the basal Buckhorn Member of the Cedar Mountain Formation (Aptian-Albian) separates the overlying main member from the mudrocks of the Tithonian Brushy Basin Member of the Morrison Formation. Without the Buckhorn, the mudrocks of the Cedar Mountain Formation appear to grade into those of the Morrison, so one is apt to call the entire sequence Morrison. Where the Cedar Mountain Formation appears to grade in to the Morrison, use of lower vertebrate teeth can provide an additional means to separate the Morrison from the Cedar Mountain Formation. Lower vertebrate teeth and associated microvertebrate remains (eggshell and bone fragments) …
Fluorescence Of Oil Well Cuttings Under The Action Of Ultraviolet Light As Pertaining To Depth Of Wells Investigated, Linus S. Drees
Fluorescence Of Oil Well Cuttings Under The Action Of Ultraviolet Light As Pertaining To Depth Of Wells Investigated, Linus S. Drees
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
In 1937, Lippert (6) published a survey of the radioactive properties of subterranean waters of Ellis County, Kansas. In 1940, Bell, Goodman, and Whitehead (1) reported a survey on the radioactivity of sedimentary rocks and associated petroleum. In 1944, w. L. Russell (10) reported on the total gamma ray activity of sedimentary rocks as indicated by Geiger-Mueller Counter determination. Lastly, in 1949, M. W. Johnston (5) made a survey of radioactivity of oilwell drilling fluid with depth of wells. Since Johnston's work cited above included only producing wells it was thought worthwhile to continue this investigation to include wells both …

An Investigation Of The Radioactivity Of Oilwell Drilling Fluid, With Depth, Of Wells In The Berland Field Of Rooks County, Milford W. Johnston
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
In reviewing the foregoing literature and in consideration of the very important place of the state of Kansas in the nation's production of petroleum, it was thought that possibly a contribution might be made to the general subject of geophysical prospecting for oil by the adoption and execution of the problem proposed by the title of this thesis. Since a similar but more scattered study of this problem had been previously made by Lippert with the use of an electroscope, it was considered worth-while to repeat the electroscopic observations together with Geiger-Mueller Counter observations on a new series of wells …
The Magnesium Content Of The Rocks Of The Upper Cretaceous System Of Ellis And Osborne Counties, Kansas, Robert Funston
The Magnesium Content Of The Rocks Of The Upper Cretaceous System Of Ellis And Osborne Counties, Kansas, Robert Funston
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
The recent impetus given industry by the national defense emergency has made everyone more or less conscious of the great importance of minerals. During the past few years some of the industrial leaders of Kansas have been attempting to promote the natural resources of the state. Some minerals once considered of little or no value are now being developed. For many years the limestone rocks of Western Kansas have been used for building purposes. Until recently little work has been done on the chemical composition of these rocks. The author has decided to continue the study by analyzing the rocks …
Chemical Analyses Of Some Oil-Well Waters Of Russell, Ellis And Trego Counties, H. Everett Runyon
Chemical Analyses Of Some Oil-Well Waters Of Russell, Ellis And Trego Counties, H. Everett Runyon
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
Considerable work dealing with analysis of oil-well waters of other areas has been published, but to the knowledge of the author, none has been published dealing specifically with the waters of this area. While the waters dealt with in this paper are not far different from the waters of the Midcontinent area as a whole, there are certain differences which are noticeable. For instance strontium is found in the top waters of the Eldorado, Kansas field. None has been found in this area. The sulphate content of the top water here is very high. Both apparently cause trouble at times. …
