Karstification Of The Pennyroyal Plain Behind The Retreating Chester Escarpment: Warren, Simpson & Logan Counties, Kentucky, Anthony Able

Hydrogeologic investigations were conducted on the drainage systems of an area of the Pennyroyal sinkhole plain of south central Kentucky. The degree of karstification of five area streams was studied to develop an understanding of the evolution of drainage as the landscape changes from a sandstone caprock plateau to a limestone sinkhole plain. The Chester Upland, capped by the Big Clifty Sandstone, possesses predominantly surface drainage and the Pennyroyal Plain, formed on Mississippian limestones, possesses considerable subsurface drainage. As the Chester Upland Escarpment retreats and surface streams are onto the limestones, the streams evolve to become subsurface streams. The five …

The visual quality of a river basin and its associated properties can be identified, evaluated and integrated into the landscape planning process. The model developed provides a quantitative methodology for determining visual quality on the basis of available Geographic Information System factors. These factors are utilized to develop the preference attributes, COLOR, FORM, TEXTURE and LINE, which are associated with the assessment of visual quality. The preference attributes are then combined through a decision making process into a continuum of DISTINCTIVE, GOOD, AVERAGE and MINIMAL visual quality and is expressed digitally in map format. Impacts Of Abandoned Surface Coal-Mined Lands On The Local Population In Southwestern Indiana, Fenner O. Omolo

This study was involved with direct impact of abandoned surface coal-mined lands on the local population in southwestern Indiana. Five problem areas studied have a total of 237 acres of gob, 71 acres of slurry, 22 acres of spoil areas, 10 dangerous high walls, 13 acres of haul road, and 4 acres of tipple. Only three problem areas have postreclamation plans, while the rest do not. This thesis deals with a group of artifact collections gathered by local amateurs from a series of sites along the western shoreline of Cascade Reservoir. This study uses these artifacts as a basis to put together a preliminary view of Long Valley prehistory. Outlines of the basic artifact types are formulated and placed into a chronology based upon typological comparisons and obsidian hydration. Previous archaeological work, the ethnohistory, and local geology of the valley are discussed and related ot the sites, used in this study, in order to determine their patterns and characteristics. Geologists have used numerous tYPes of remote sensors for the interpretation of earth surface features. Two of the more recently developed remote sensors are SLAR (side-looking airborne radar) and LANDSAT (ERTS, Earth's Resources Technology Satellite, renamed L~~DSAT). The author undertook a straightforward qualitative research study to ascertain and compare the amount, types and reliability of the geologic information which can be derived separately from visually interpreted LANDSAT and SLAR imagery. Geography and Geology Faculty Publications

This report is an account of research progress on rock glaciers of Afghanistan, Colorado, and Utah. Because of the preliminary nature of this work, some speculation is present; nevertheless, we think there is evidence for each major, new point expressed. The main thesis of our work is that rock glaciers are polygenetic and appear to be part of a continuum of similar landforms grading morphologically and, presumably, mechanically from one type to another type.
