Application Of Mineral-Solution Equilibria To The Search For Sanstone-Type Uranium Deposits In The Beaver Basin, Utah, W. R. Miller, J. B. Mchugh, U.S. Geological Survey
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
An improved computer modeling program was used to calculate the saturation indexes of 50 waters from the Beaver basin in west-central Utah with respect to uraninite and coffinite. The mineral-solution study showed that the chemical environment of parts of the Beaver basin is favorable for the occurrence of sandstone-type uranium deposits. The ground waters from several areas are supersaturated with respect to uraninite and coffinite. Two areas, in particular, an area west of the town of Beaver and an area near the settlement of Manderfield, have been identified as most favorable for exploration. The methods described in this study can …

Shallow Electromagnetic Data From Three Known Fault Zones In The Paradox Basin, Utah, Raymond D. Watts, U.S. Geological Survey
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
This report describes a preliminary investigation of the effectiveness of two electromagnetic exploration methods as means of finding unmapped faults in the Paradox Basin environment. Results indicate that the Very Low Frequency (VLF method is useful. VLF profiles were measured across three known fault traces near Gibson Dome, San Juan County, Utah. Each fault or set of faults generated a significant anomaly. In some cases, the anomaly due to the fault was superimposed on a larger scale anomaly caused by the transition from unaltered rocks away from the fault to altered rocks in or on one side of the fault …

Rock, stream-sediment, and hydrogeochemical surveys were conducted in the Mount Belknap caldera area, south-central Utah, during the summer of 1979. The presence of leucocratic rocks and relatively high concentrations of the elements Nb, Be, Ga, Y, Pb, Sn, Mo, and F with corresponding low concentrations of the elements Ba, Mg, Ca, Fe, Sr, and Cu suggests that late phase highly differentiated felsic magmas were intruded and (or) erupted in the caldera vicinity. The presence of Mo and Sn in the rocks and F in the water samples suggest that the ore elements were concentrated, first in residual fluids in the …

Coal in the Ferron Sandstone Member of the Mancos Shale of Cretaceous age has traditionally been mined by underground techniques in the Emery Coal Field in the southern end of Castle Valley in east-central Utah. However, approximately 99 million tons are recoverable by surface mining. Ground water in the Ferron is the sole source of supply for the town of Emery, but the aquifer is essentially untapped outside the Emery area. The Ferron Sandstone Member crops out along the eastern edge of Castle Valley and generally dips 2" to 10" to the northwest beneath the surface. Sandstones in the Ferron …

A severe rain storm on August 11 and 18, 1979, caused major flood damage in urban areas of east Ogden, Utah. At least 3.85 cm of rain fell in a 7 hour-period. The severity of damage was dramatically increased by water diverted from the Brigham-Ogden Canal, when it was clogged by a debris flow in the vicinity or Third, Taylor, and Polk Streets (Fig. 1). The purpose or this investigation is to ascertain the sequence of events that followed the storm, and to quantify the processes insofar as possible. An inspection of the area on September 21-25, 1979 , and …

Structure And Petrology Of Tertiary Volcanic Rocks Near Etna, Utah, Kent W. Smith
Structure And Petrology Of Tertiary Volcanic Rocks Near Etna, Utah, Kent W. Smith
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Three volcanic domes and related volcanic rocks of Tertiary age are located near Etna, Utah, in Box Elder County. The domes follow a north-south trend and are fault controlled. Flow structure indicates a change from a less viscous, flow-forming lava which produced an exogenous dome to a more viscous lava which formed endogenous domes. Associated pyroclastic deposits are negligible. The volcanic rocks are composed of porphyritic rhyolite and rhyolitic vitrophyre having phenocrysts of quartz, sanidine, plagioclase and biotite with minor amounts of Fe-Ti oxides, hypersthene, allanite and calcic amphibole. Quartz and sanidine phenocrysts are generally embayed whereas plagioclase phenocrysts are …

Geology, Characteristics, And Resource Potential Of The Low Temperature Geothermal System Near Midway, Wasatch County, Utah, James F. Kohler
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Recent awareness of the finite nature of fossil-fuel resources has resulted in an increased interest in alternate sources of energy such as geothermal. To evaluate the geothermal energy potential of the hot-springs system near Midway, Wasatch Co., Utah, consideration was given to heat flow, water chemistry, and structural controls.
Abnormal heat flow was indicated qualitatively by snow-melt patterns and quantitatively by heat-flow measurements that were obtained from two of four temperature-gradient wells drilled in the area. These measurements indicated that the area north of the town of Midway is characterized by heat flow equal to 321.75 mW/m2, which …

Sucker Regeneration In A Utah Aspen Clone After Clearcutting, Partial Cutting, Scarification, And Girdling, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service
Forestry
Clearcutting, partial cutting, scarification, and girdling were used to stimulate root suckering in a Utah aspen clone. Regeneration was inventoried yearly during the first 4 years after treatment and again after 12 years. Clearcutting resulted in the greatest number of suckers. In most years, partial cuts (cuts that removed 67 percent of the basal area) had less than 50 percent as much regeneration as the clearcut plots. Girdling stimulated suckering to a lesser degree than cutting. Mortality was high on girdled plots and by the 12th year after treatment few suckers had survived. Scarification had no apparent effect on sucker …

Progress On Rock Glacier Research, John F. Shroder Jr., John R. Giardino
Geography and Geology Faculty Publications
This report is an account of research progress on rock glaciers of Afghanistan, Colorado, and Utah. Because of the preliminary nature of this work, some speculation is present; nevertheless, we think there is evidence for each major, new point expressed. The main thesis of our work is that rock glaciers are polygenetic and appear to be part of a continuum of similar landforms grading morphologically and, presumably, mechanically from one type to another type.

A suite of silicic volcanic rocks is associated with the Roosevelt Hot Springs geothermal area in southwestern Utah. The volcanic sequence includes Tertiary rhyolite 8 m.y. old and obsidian, ash and rhyolite of Quaternary age. The Quaternary lavas are characterized by high silica content (76.5% SiO2) and total alkalies in excess of 9 percent. Obsidians commonly contain greater amounts of flourine than water. Two older flows (0.8 m.y.) can be distinguished from younger dome and pyroclastic material (approximately 0.5 m.y.) by subtle differences in their chemistry. The mineralogy of the rhyolites consists of alkali feldspar, plagioclase, and small amounts of …

Certain Edaphic And Biotic Factors Affecting Vegetation In The Shadscale Community Of The Kaiparowits Area, Vane Orlan Campbell
Theses and Dissertations
A study area on the southern extensions of the Great Basin cold desert (Kaiparowits Basin, Utah) was selected which has had varying amounts of disturbance. Areas with similar slope and exposure in the Shadscale community were sampled. At each site, soil samples were collected and percent sand, percent clay, percent silt, soluble salts, and hydrogen ion concentrations were measured. Cluster analysis based on percent frequency of the perennial species showed that eight groups or sub-communities were definable within the area sampled. Patterns within the vegetation were shown to be independent with the use of cluster analysis. Discriminant analysis on soil …
