Effects Of Recycled Water On Landscape Plants, Casey R. Miranda Jun 2010

Effects Of Recycled Water On Landscape Plants, Casey R. Miranda

Master's Theses

ABSTRACT EFFECTS OF RECYCLED WATER ON LANDSCAPE PLANTS Casey Ray Miranda Recycled water is water that has been previously used, has suffered a loss of quality, and has been properly treated for redistribution (Wu et al. 2001). The use of recycled water as an alternative to fresh water in the landscape can have positive and negative effects. Experimentation on 40 different plant species during a 32 week period (2 phases of 16 weeks), was conducted to analyze the effects of recycled water irrigation on the appearance of landscape plants. Each species of plant was planted into 10 individual number 2 …

Global Irrigation Water Demand: Variability And Uncertainties Arising From Agricultural And Climate Data Sets, Dominik Wisser, Steve Frolking, Ellen M. Douglas, Balazs M. Fekete, Charles Vorosmarty, Andreas H. Schumann Dec 2008

Global Irrigation Water Demand: Variability And Uncertainties Arising From Agricultural And Climate Data Sets, Dominik Wisser, Steve Frolking, Ellen M. Douglas, Balazs M. Fekete, Charles Vorosmarty, Andreas H. Schumann

Earth Sciences

Agricultural water use accounts for around 70% of the total water that is withdrawn from surface water and groundwater. We use a new, gridded, global-scale water balance model to estimate interannual variability in global irrigation water demand arising from climate data sets and uncertainties arising from agricultural and climate data sets. We used contemporary maps of irrigation and crop distribution, and so do not account for variability or trends in irrigation area or cropping. We used two different global maps of irrigation and two different reconstructions of daily weather 1963–2002. Simulated global irrigation water demand varied by ∼30%, depending on …

Optimal Irrigation Management For Sloping, Blocked-End Borders, Jorge Jose Escurra Dec 2008

Optimal Irrigation Management For Sloping, Blocked-End Borders, Jorge Jose Escurra

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A robust mathematical model of one-dimensional flow for sloping, blocked-end border irrigation was developed using the four-point implicit method to solve the Saint-Venant equations, the volume-balance solution method, and the implementation of new algorithms to avoid numerical instability and solution divergence. The model has the capability of successfully simulating all surface irrigation phases in blocked-end borders for a range of inflow rates (0.01 - 0.05 m3/s per m), longitudinal slopes (up to 1.00%), and border lengths (100 - 500 m).

To achieve numerical stability over the specified parameter ranges, the model was divided into three parts: (1) advance-phase …

An Evaluation Of Selenium Concentrations In Water, Sediment, Invertebrates, And Fish From The Solomon River Basin, Thomas W. May, James F. Fairchild, Jim D. Petty, Michael J. Walther, Jeff Lucero, Mike Delvaux, Jill Manring, M. Armbruster Jan 2007

An Evaluation Of Selenium Concentrations In Water, Sediment, Invertebrates, And Fish From The Solomon River Basin, Thomas W. May, James F. Fairchild, Jim D. Petty, Michael J. Walther, Jeff Lucero, Mike Delvaux, Jill Manring, M. Armbruster

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The Solomon River Basin is located in north-central Kansas in an area underlain by marine geologic shales. Selenium is an indigenous constituent of these shales and is readily leached into the surrounding groundwater. Portions of the Basin are irrigated primarily through the pumping of selenium-contaminated groundwater from wells onto fields in agricultural production. Water, sediment, macro-invertebrates, and fish were collected from various sites in the Basin in 1998 and analyzed for selenium. Selenium concentrations were analyzed spatially and temporally and compared to reported selenium toxic effect thresholds for specific ecosystem components: water, sediments, food-chain organisms, and whole-body fish. A selenium …

Alstroemeria, Aileen Reid Oct 2006

Alstroemeria, Aileen Reid

Bulletins 4000 -

About 60 species of Alstroemeria grow wild in South America, in habitats ranging from the snowline of the Andes and high mountain plateaus down through the highland forests to the coastal deserts.

A member of the lily family, Alstroemeria grows from a rhizome that also develops tuberous storage outgrowths and fleshy roots. The aerial shoots can be either vegetative or reproductive. Normally shoots that have unfolded more than 30 leaves will not flower and remain vegetative.

The leaves of Alstroemeria are unusual in that they rotate through 180 degrees as they unfold, so that the upper surface becomes the lower …

Generalized Geologic Map For Land-Use Planning: Crittenden County, Kentucky, E. Glynn Beck, David A. Williams, Daniel I. Carey Jan 2005

Generalized Geologic Map For Land-Use Planning: Crittenden County, Kentucky, E. Glynn Beck, David A. Williams, Daniel I. Carey

Map and Chart--KGS

This map is not intended to be used for selecting individual sites. Its purpose is to inform land-use planners, government officials, and the public in a general way about geologic bedrock conditions that affect the selection of sites for various purposes. The properties of thick soils may supercede those of the underlying bedrock and should be considered on a site-to-site basis. At any site, it is important to understand the characteristics of both the soils and the underlying rock.

Wheatbelt Waterwise = Saltwise : Gardening Guide, John Colwill, Juana Roe Jan 2004

Wheatbelt Waterwise = Saltwise : Gardening Guide, John Colwill, Juana Roe

Bulletins 4000 -

As a result of agricultural clearing, many country towns are now feeling the effects of rising groundwater and the salt that it carries. Salinity has been identified as Australia’s number one environmental problem. While most people think that salinity means land lost to agriculture, it also poses a serious threat to many country towns. A report for the Department of Agriculture in 2001 highlighted the need for simple and cost-effective salinity management strategies to be adopted in wheatbelt towns. These included water recycling, revegetation and more efficient water use.

Fertigation Of Vegetables In Western Australia, J Burt Jan 2002

Fertigation Of Vegetables In Western Australia, J Burt

Bulletins 4000 -

Fertigation is the technique of using soluble fertilisers to supply essential nutrients to vegetables through sprinkler or trickle irrigation systems, or by means of a boom spray. It is ideally suited to most horticultural areas in Western Australia, especially the sandy soils of the Swan Coastal Plain that have a poor capacity to retain nutrients.

Before and after planting, nutrients are often applied to vegetables on soils of the Swan Coastal Plain by applications of poultry manure* or solid fertilisers. After planting, fertigation is a safe and effective method of applying top-dressings of nutrients to crops, especially after the rows …

Agricultural Water Management In The Missippi Delta Region Of Arkansas, H. Don Scott, James A. Ferguson, Linda Hanson, Todd Fugitt, Earl Smith

AAES Research Reports and Research Bulletins

Agriculture is the largest use of soil and water resources in eastern Arkansas. This bulletin summarized the recent historical use of soil and water by agriculture and the impact of irrigation on yields of rice, soybeans and cotton. The experiments conducted in the field to quantitatively schedule irrigations of crops are summarized. The results show the close relationship between the irrigation of crops and the extraction of water from the Alluvial Aquifer. The implications of this relationaship for the future are discussed.
