Earthquakes have become one of the leading causes of death from natural hazards in the last fifty years. Continuous efforts have been made to understand the physical characteristics of earthquakes and the interaction between the physical hazards and the environments so that appropriate warnings may be generated before earthquakes strike. However, earthquake forecasting is not trivial at all. Reliable forecastings should include the analysis and the signals indicating the coming of a significant quake. Unfortunately, these signals are rarely evident before earthquakes occur, and therefore it is challenging to detect such precursors in seismic analysis. Among the available technologies for …

Optimization Of The Distribution Of Drilling Boreholes In Methane Production From Coal Seams, Anna Wątor, Jarosław Chećko, Tomasz Urych Jan 2021

Optimization Of The Distribution Of Drilling Boreholes In Methane Production From Coal Seams, Anna Wątor, Jarosław Chećko, Tomasz Urych

Journal of Sustainable Mining

The paper presents an evaluation of methane production from coal seams. The Warszowice-PawłowicePółnoc deposit was selected for numerical modelling of methane production. The numerical model was made for a fragment of this deposit of about 2 km2. The numerical model was constructed for 6 seams. Three deposits were selected for simulation of methane production. Three horizontal boreholes were designed within the model area, referring to the existing Suszec-19 borehole. A number of simulations related to methane production from the selected deposits were performed. They included different variants of the number of boreholes and also took into account the …

Linking Genes To Traits In Fungi, A. L. Romero-Olivares, Eric W. Morrison, A. Pringle, Serita D. Frey

Faculty Publications

Fungi are mediators of the nitrogen and carbon cycles in terrestrial ecosystems. Examining how nitrogen uptake and organic matter decomposition potential differs in fungi can provide insight into the underlying mechanisms driving fungal ecological processes and ecosystem functioning. In this study, we assessed the frequency of genes encoding for specific enzymes that facilitate nitrogen uptake and organic matter decomposition in 879 fungal genomes with fungal taxa grouped into trait-based categories. Our linked gene-trait data approach revealed that gene frequencies vary across and within trait-based groups and that trait-based categories differ in trait space. We present two examples of how this …

The climate impacts of smoke from fires ignited by nuclear war would include global cooling and crop failure. Facing increased reliance on ocean-based food sources, it is critical to understand the physical and biological state of the post-war oceans. Here we use an Earth system model to simulate six nuclear war scenarios. We show that global cooling can generate a large, sustained response in the equatorial Pacific, resembling an El Niño but persisting for up to seven years. The El Niño following nuclear war, or Nuclear Niño, would be characterized by westerly trade wind anomalies and a shutdown of equatorial …

Meeting internationally agreed-upon climate targets requires carbon dioxide removal (CDR) strategies coupled with an urgent phase-down of fossil fuel emissions. However, the efficacy and wider impacts of CDR are poorly understood. Enhanced rock weathering (ERW) is a land-based CDR strategy requiring large-scale field trials. Here we show that a low 3.44 t ha−1 wollastonite treatment in an 11.8 ha acid-rain-impacted forested watershed in New Hampshire, USA, led to cumulative carbon capture by carbonic acid weathering of 0.025–0.13 t CO2 ha−1 over 15 years. Despite a 0.8–2.4 t CO2 ha−1 logistical carbon penalty from mining, grinding, transportation, and spreading, by 2015 …

Experimental Study Of Co2 Injection Into Carbonate Depleted Field: A Case Study From Central Luconia Field, Sarawak, East Malaysia, Nur Zafirah Mat Razali Jan 2021

Experimental Study Of Co2 Injection Into Carbonate Depleted Field: A Case Study From Central Luconia Field, Sarawak, East Malaysia, Nur Zafirah Mat Razali

Student Works (2020-2029)

This study aimed to address the challenges and strategies to determine the critical rate of CO2 injection into carbonate depleted gas fields. In this research, the critical rate is the maximum allowable injection rate before formation damage initiation. The cause of formation damage could be due to in-situ mobilization or trapping of migratory fines resulting in plugging of the flow path. This study performed a thorough investigation of a different rock-fluid system to evaluate the safe injection limit, as the critical rate is different for each rock-fluid system. The geochemical effect of CO2 injection toward carbonate formation was also investigated …
