The environmental mobility of antimony (Sb) is largely unexplored in geochemical environments. Iron oxide minerals are considered major sinks for Sb. Among the different oxidation states of Sb, (+) V is found more commonly in a wide redox range. Despite many adsorption studies of Sb (V) with various iron oxide minerals, detailed research on the adsorption mechanism of Sb (V) on hematite using macroscopic, spectroscopic, and surface complexation modeling is rare. Thus, the main objective of our study is to evaluate the surface complexation mechanism of Sb (V) on hematite under a range of solution properties using macroscopic, in situ …

Holocene Records Of Nebraska Mammals, Hugh H. Genoways Mar 2021

Holocene Records Of Nebraska Mammals, Hugh H. Genoways

Zea E-Books Collection

A survey of the archeological and paleontological literature allowed a compilation of Holocene records of mammals in Nebraska. This survey identified Holocene records from 338 sites in 62 of the 93 Nebraska counties. These counties were located throughout state, but there was a concentration of sites in southwestern Nebraska where there were 27 fossil sites in Frontier County and 22 in Harlan County. Fossils sites were underrepresented in the Sand Hills region. Records of fossil mammals covered the entire Holocene period from 13,000 years ago until AD 1850. A minimum of 57 species (with eight additional species potentially present) representing …

Seismic Attenuation, Time Delays And Raypath Bending Of Teleseisms Beneath Uturuncu Volcano, Bolivia, Alexandra K. Farrell Mar 2021

Seismic Attenuation, Time Delays And Raypath Bending Of Teleseisms Beneath Uturuncu Volcano, Bolivia, Alexandra K. Farrell

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A set of 14 teleseismic earthquakes was studied to determine how wave propagation was affected by a presumed magma body beneath Uturuncu volcano, Bolivia. Teleseisms are suitable for study because they are relatively long period, contain purely P waves, and have near-vertical incidence angles. The number of events is small but the events have good signal-to-noise ratios and very similar waveforms for each event so that reliable measurements could be made of arrival times and amplitudes. Attenuation of amplitudes occurs in a NW-SE trend beneath the volcano, 14 by 34 km (long axis NW-SE). Calculated values of the quality factor …

Geoscience Faculty Research

This white paper summarizes the scientific importance of studying igneous compositions in meteorites, surface samples, and through orbital analyses to better constrain the geology of Mars as a whole and better understand the geological processes that have shaped Mars in the past and present.

First Description Of Deep Benthic Habitats And Communities Of Oceanic Islands And Seamounts Of The Nazca Desventuradas Marine Park, Chile, Jan M. Tapia-Guerra, Ariadna Mecho, Erin E. Easton, María De Los Ángeles Gallardo, Matthias Gorny, Javier Sellanes Mar 2021

First Description Of Deep Benthic Habitats And Communities Of Oceanic Islands And Seamounts Of The Nazca Desventuradas Marine Park, Chile, Jan M. Tapia-Guerra, Ariadna Mecho, Erin E. Easton, María De Los Ángeles Gallardo, Matthias Gorny, Javier Sellanes

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Seamounts and oceanic islands of the Chilean Exclusive Economic Zone at the intersection of the Nazca and Salas y Gómez ridges lie within one of the least explored areas in the world. The sparse information available, mainly for seamounts outside Chilean jurisdiction and shallow-water fauna of the Desventuradas Islands, suggests that the area is a hotspot of endemism. This apparent uniqueness of the fauna motivated the creation of the large Nazca-Desventuradas Marine Park (NDMP, ~ 300,000 km2) around the small islands San Felix and San Ambrosio in 2015. We report for the first time a detailed description of benthic microhabitats …

Carbon Stock In Pulau Pintu Gedong Mangrove Forest, Malaysia, Mysha Farzana Peuny Mar 2021

Carbon Stock In Pulau Pintu Gedong Mangrove Forest, Malaysia, Mysha Farzana Peuny

Student Works (2020-2029)

Mangrove forests are regarded as the most significant carbon (C) sink in the tropics. They could play an important role in tackling climate change mitigation by reducing deforestation in the environmental, social, and economic sphere. The aims of the present study were to assess the species composition, phytosociological conditions and the ecosystem carbon stock in the tidal gradient of mangrove forest in Pulau Pintu Gedong in the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Blue Carbon stock was quantified in soil, downed wood and trees, saplings and seedlings components. The mean ecosystem carbon stock was about 783.58 ± 135.93 Mg /ha at …

Bayesian Seismic Refraction Inversion For Critical Zone Science And Near-Surface Applications, Mong-Han Huang, Berit Hudson-Rasmussen, Scott Burdick, Vedran Lekić, Mariel D. Nelson, Kristen E. Fauria, Nicholas Schmerr

Environmental Science and Geology Faculty Research Publications

The critical zone (CZ) is the region of the Earth’s surface that extends from the bottom of the weathered bedrock to the tree canopy and is important because of its ability to store water and support ecosystems. A growing number of studies use active source shallow seismic refraction to explore and define the size and structure of the CZ across landscapes. However, measurement uncertainty and model resolution at depth are generally not evaluated, which makes the identification and interpretation of CZ features inconclusive. To reliably resolve seismic velocity with depth, we implement a Transdimensional Hierarchical Bayesian (THB) framework with reversible-jump …

Assessment Of Water Availability In The Osage Nation Using An Integrated Hydrologic-Flow Model, Jonathan (Jp) Traylor, Shana L. Mashburn, Randall T. Hanson, Steven M. Peterson Mar 2021

Assessment Of Water Availability In The Osage Nation Using An Integrated Hydrologic-Flow Model, Jonathan (Jp) Traylor, Shana L. Mashburn, Randall T. Hanson, Steven M. Peterson

United States Geological Survey: Water Reports and Publications

Document abstract

The Osage Nation of northeastern Oklahoma, conterminous with Osage County, covers about 2,900 square miles. The area is primarily rural with 62 percent of the land being native prairie grass, and much of the area is used for cattle ranching and extraction of petroleum and natural gas. Protection of water rights are important to the Osage Nation because of its reliance on cattle ranching and the potential for impairment of water quality by petroleum extraction. Additionally, the potential for future population increases, demands for water from neighboring areas such as the Tulsa metropolitan area, and expansion of petroleum …

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Tropical ecosystems contribute significantly to global emissions of methane (CH4), and landscape topography influences the rate of CH4 emissions from wet tropical forest soils. However, extreme events such as drought can alter normal topographic patterns of emissions. Here we explain the dynamics of CH4 emissions during normal and drought conditions across a catena in the Luquillo Experimental Forest, Puerto Rico. Valley soils served as the major source of CH4 emissions in a normal precipitation year (2016), but drought recovery in 2015 resulted in dramatic pulses in CH4 emissions from all topographic positions. Geochemical parameters …
