Planetary habitability is in part governed by nutrient availability, including the availability of the element phosphorus. The nutrient phosphorus plays roles in various necessary biochemical functions, and its biogeochemical cycling has been proposed to be extremely slow due to a strong coupling to the rock cycle via mineral weathering. Here we show a route to P liberation from water-rock reactions that are thought to be common throughout the Solar System. We report the speciation of phosphorus in serpentinite rocks to include the ion phosphite (HPO32- with P3+) and show that reduction of phosphate to phosphite is predicted from thermodynamic models …

A decade (2007–2016) of hourly 6‐km‐resolution maps of the surface currents across the Mid‐Atlantic Bight (MAB) generated by a regional‐scale High Frequency Radar network are used to reveal new insights into the spatial patterns of the annual and seasonal mean surface flows. Across the 10‐year time series, temporal means and interannual and intra‐annual variability are used to quantify the variability of spatial surface current patterns. The 10‐year annual mean surface flows are weaker and mostly cross‐shelf near the coast, increasing in speed and rotating to more alongshore directions near the shelfbreak, and increasing in speed and rotating to flow off‐shelf …
Analysis Of Clastic Cave Sediment In A Fluviokarst System, Russell Cave, Northeast Alabama, Jonathan Camelo
Analysis Of Clastic Cave Sediment In A Fluviokarst System, Russell Cave, Northeast Alabama, Jonathan Camelo
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
Russell Cave is part of a fluviokarst system located along the edge of the Cumberland Plateau in northeast Alabama. The cave system acts as a surface-subsurface drainage system transporting, depositing, and accumulating large influxes of terrestrial-derived materials (sediments, organic material, and magnetic minerals) into the subsurface system forming sediment traps. Five core sites along various discontinuous sediment banks were collected and sampled in 2 cm intervals. Data collection involved Red-Green-Blue (RGB) color, loss on ignition (LOI), magnetic susceptibility (MS) grain-size analysis, end member mixing analysis (EMMA), and 14C radiocarbon dating. The goals for this research were to identify the …

Weighing The Impacts Of Airbnb In Iceland: Multivariate Perspectives, Alexa Gorlick
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
This research sought to evaluate if the sharing economy leader, Airbnb, creates impacts that residents of Iceland feel they experience. The study also aimed to discover if rural and urban inhabitants have similar perspectives on Airbnb impacts. Airbnb’s entrepreneurial encroachment into the accommodation sector has caused a multitude of localities to manage an assortment of complex affairs. These matters are difficult to solve due to their changing, contradictory, and incomplete premise. The purpose of this research is to determine if Airbnb activity is prominent in Iceland and therefore causing the country to experience similar issues that officials are struggling to …
An Assessment Of Convergence In The Feeding Morphology Of Xiphactinus Audax And Megalops Atlanticus Using Landmark-Based Geometric Morphometrics, Edward Chase Shelburne
An Assessment Of Convergence In The Feeding Morphology Of Xiphactinus Audax And Megalops Atlanticus Using Landmark-Based Geometric Morphometrics, Edward Chase Shelburne
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
Convergence is an evolutionary phenomenon wherein distantly related organisms independently develop features or functional adaptations to overcome similar environmental constraints. Historically, convergence among organisms has been speculated or asserted with little rigorous or quantitative investigation. More recent advancements in systematics has allowed for the detection and study of convergence in a phylogenetic context, but this does little to elucidate convergent anatomical features in extinct taxa with poorly understood evolutionary histories. The purpose of this study is to investigate one potentially convergent system—the feeding structure of Xiphactinus audax (Teleostei: Ichthyodectiformes) and Megalops atlanticus (Teleostei: Elopiformes)—using a comparative anatomical approach to assess …
Community Structure Has Greater Effect On Water Column Ammonium Cycling Than Nutrients And Temperature In Shallow Lake Mesocosms, Shannon Marie Collins
Community Structure Has Greater Effect On Water Column Ammonium Cycling Than Nutrients And Temperature In Shallow Lake Mesocosms, Shannon Marie Collins
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Harmful algal blooms (HABs) impact lakes worldwide and are caused by excess nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) loading from watersheds. Climate warming and nutrient loading effects on N cycling were examined in shallow lake mesocosms in Denmark. N loading to some mesocosms ceased in June 2018 and resumed in June 2019. Ammonium (NH4+) uptake, regeneration, and nitrification and nitrate uptake rates were evaluated. High nutrient, ambient temperature mesocosms exhibited the highest NH4+ cycling rates. Before resumption of N loading in high nutrient mesocosms, NH4+ regeneration supported 46 % of potential microbial NH4+ demand, versus 24 % with N loading. Nutrient …

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications
A laboratory emission spectrum of TiO in the visible and near-infrared regions (476–1176 nm) has been calibrated and corrected. High-resolution experimental absorption cross sections for TiO with natural isotopic abundance are provided at a temperature of about 2300 K. These cross sections have been compared with those derived from the ExoMol line list. The experimental cross sections can be used directly as a template for cross correlation TiO detection in hot Jupiter exoplanets.
The Geometry Of The Orthological Triangles, Florentin Smarandache, Ion Patrascu
The Geometry Of The Orthological Triangles, Florentin Smarandache, Ion Patrascu
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
Plants and trees grow perpendicular to the plane tangent to the soil surface, at the point of penetration into the soil; in vacuum, the bodies fall perpendicular to the surface of the Earth - in both cases, if the surface is horizontal. Starting from the property of two triangles to be orthological, the two authors have designed this work that seeks to provide an integrative image of elementary geometry by the prism of this "filter". Basically, the property of orthology is the skeleton of the present work, which establishes many connections of some theorems and geometric properties with it. The …
Physical Modeling Of The Krauklis Waves: Insights From Two Experimental Apparatuses, Haitao Cao
Physical Modeling Of The Krauklis Waves: Insights From Two Experimental Apparatuses, Haitao Cao
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Fractures play an important role in the geological related processes such as hydraulic fracturing, water-water disposal, and volcanic earthquake. Seismic waves can provide useful information from fractures at a relatively low cost. In particular, the acoustic property of fractures containing magmatic or hydrothermal fluids can provide useful information about the fracture size and the fluid composition within the fracture. For instance, in volcanology, the resonant frequency of long-period events that are linked to crack interface waves is used to obtain fluid properties of cracks in magmatic systems. However, in order to rely on seismic data, they should be precisely characterized …

The Devonian-Carboniferous boundary in the type area of the Mississippian subsystem (tri-state area of Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri) has been historically difficult to identify. Many of the localities contain similar lithologies and stratigraphic successions, but chronostratigraphic correlation of seemingly identical lithologies can vary greatly in this interval and frequently this has led to miscorrelation. In particular, the similar lithofacies that comprise the McCraney Formation and Louisiana Formation have been a source of stratigraphic confusion for over 100 years. To investigate the Devonian-Carboniferous boundary interval in the Mississippian type area we selected two localities in southeastern Iowa, the H-28 core from …
Exploring Effects Of Gps Processing On Atmospheric And Hydrologic Pressure-Induced Crustal Responses, Cody T. Norberg
Exploring Effects Of Gps Processing On Atmospheric And Hydrologic Pressure-Induced Crustal Responses, Cody T. Norberg
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
The Earth’s crust is in continuous motion from changes in fluid pressures associated with the redistribution of mass at the surface. These forces, known as surface mass loading, make up a significant amount of signal within GPS time series. This thesis is broken up into two projects exploring atmospheric and hydrologic pressure-induced crustal responses. The first project focuses on effects of GPS processing on corrections of atmospheric loading. We use data from over 1100 GPS stations within the Western US to investigate crustal displacements from atmospheric surface pressure variations. We find that modeling and removing atmospheric mass loading reduces root …
A Multi-Method Investigation Of The Modern Sedimentation And Late Holocene Paleolimnology Of June Lake (Mono County, Ca), And A Survey-Based Analysis Of Ninth Graders’ Attitudes Towards Geology, Eva Lyon
Theses and Dissertations--Earth and Environmental Sciences
Three distinct manuscripts comprise this dissertation. The first analyzes the modern sedimentary basin of June Lake, a small glacial lake in the eastern Sierra Nevada of California (USA) using a number of data sets, including bathymetry, surface sediment composition, and seismic stratigraphy. The seismic survey revealed sublacustrine morphological features that suggest the basin originated due to ice scour, as well as four acoustically distinct stratigraphic units that reflect the history of sedimentation following glacial scouring. Corroborating the seismic record, sediment cores from the youngest unit are composed of hemipelagically deposited, organic-rich, laminated diatomaceous oozes alternating with coarse tephra beds. The …
Identification Of The Causes And Extent Of Elevated Methane Concentrations In The Groundwater Of Eastern Kentucky, Cristopher Alvarez Villa
Identification Of The Causes And Extent Of Elevated Methane Concentrations In The Groundwater Of Eastern Kentucky, Cristopher Alvarez Villa
Theses and Dissertations--Earth and Environmental Sciences
Recent development of unconventional oil and gas (UOG) resources has prompted concerns about its potential impact on public health and the quality of water and air resources. Elevated dissolved methane concentrations (> 1 mg/L) have been associated with proximity to UOG development and stray gas, but also with natural microbial activity. Baseline gas data, local hydrogeology and geochemistry context can aid assessment of methane sources and interactions. Methane concentrations in eastern Kentucky groundwater are above the “immediate action” level in some private/domestic water wells, show wide variations over small distances, and have been hypothesized to have different relationships to mining. …
Tracing Source Contributions To Assess Spatial Patterns Of Erosion In A Mixed Land Use Environment: Otter Creek Catchment, Fort Knox, Kentucky, Cara Peterman
Theses and Dissertations--Earth and Environmental Sciences
There is an inherent difficulty in predicting source contributions of fine-grained fluvial sediment in mixed land-use watersheds. Over a 56-week period, the spatial and temporal variability in sediment-source contributions and water quality was monitored at three sites along Otter Creek in Hardin and Meade counties, Kentucky (USA). The 203-km2 study area drains rural and agricultural lands and includes Fort Knox Army Post’s tracked-vehicle training areas. The main objectives for sediment source apportionment were to 1) identify and differentiate characteristics of civilian and military source soils to Otter Creek and 2) to apportion sediment at locations along Otter Creek to …
Biogeomorphology Of Bedrock Fluvial Systems: Example From Shawnee Run, Kentucky, Usa, Tasnuba Jerin
Biogeomorphology Of Bedrock Fluvial Systems: Example From Shawnee Run, Kentucky, Usa, Tasnuba Jerin
Theses and Dissertations--Geography
The dynamic interactions between fluvial processes and vegetation vary in different environments and are uncertain in bedrock settings. Bedrock streams are much less studied than alluvial in all aspects, and in many respects act in qualitatively different ways. This research seeks to fill this lacuna by studying bedrock streams from a biogeomorphic perspective. The first part of this research aims to identify the impacts of woody vegetation that may be common to fluvial systems and rocky hillslopes in general, or that may be unique to bedrock channels. A review of the existing literature on biogeomorphology — mostly fluvial and rocky …

Characterization Of Rare Earth Elements In The Illinois Basin Coals, Alireza Valian
Theses and Dissertations--Mining Engineering
The purpose of this study is to characterize the distribution and occurrence of rare earth elements (REEs) in the coal and coal-related material from the Illinois Basin. For characterizing the distribution of REEs, 17 core samples were investigated from various parts in the basin. Also, several individual samples from coal preparation plants and isolated geological occurrences were included in the study. In result, the average REE concentrations were calculated on a bed-to-bed basis, although the distribution of REEs in the coal beds was found laterally and vertically heterogeneous. A number of trends were found that describe the variations. Most importantly, …
Assessing The Climate Water Balance Model’S Ability To Predict Soil Moisture Variability And Species Distribution Of A Forested Watershed In The Northern Cumberland Plateau, Katherine J. Love
Theses and Dissertations--Forestry and Natural Resources
Spatial patterns of moisture and tree species have been studied using environmental gradients, often represented by terrain attributes in GIS. With climate change, GIS terrain variables, which are static as long as the elevation remains unchanged, will not reflect alterations in temperature, water cycle, and atmospheric conditions. In this thesis, the commonly used terrain variables and climate water balance variables were evaluated and compared for their ability to explain soil moisture and tree species distributions in a forested watershed in the Northern Cumberland Plateau. The results suggest that GIS terrain variables generally perform better than climate water balance variables, however, …

Recent technological advances allow us to utilize remote monitoring systems or real-time access of data. While the use of remote monitoring systems is not new, there are still numerous applications that can be explored and improved on, one such is groundwater level and quality monitoring. In the Philippines, the extraction of groundwater for both domestic use and industrial use are manually monitored by the government’s concerned agency and is done at least once per year. With this current setup, the real and significant state of the groundwater is not reflected in a way that is most valuable to the government …

A Karst Feature Predictability Model Within Barber County, Kansas, Gary M. Kelner
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
This research consisted of two topics: 1) geographic predictive models of karst features and 2), a petrographic study examining the lithology of the study area. The study area is a privately owned ranch in the Gypsum Hills of Barber County, Kansas and is known to have karst features. Two predictive models for karst features were utilized. Previously identified features, Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), and Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) imagery aided in the creation of these predictive models. These predictability models also used the ESRI ArcMap software platform. The data for these models consists of slope, …
Resource Estimation For Alpagut-Dodurga Coal Field And Determination Of Spatial Distribution Of Coal Quality Parameters, Yavuz Gül, Oğuzhan Küçükkarasu
Resource Estimation For Alpagut-Dodurga Coal Field And Determination Of Spatial Distribution Of Coal Quality Parameters, Yavuz Gül, Oğuzhan Küçükkarasu
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
In this study, coal seams of the Alpagut-Dodurga coal field, located in one of Anatolia's most important Tertiary-aged basins of the Çankırı-Çorum Basin, were modeled in 3 dimensions by using Netpro/Mine software and geostatistical methods for the estimation of resource amount. Additionally, the spatial distributions of coal quality parameters (lower calorific value, ash content, and moisture content) were determined using the same software and mapped thematically. Mining activities with inaccurate methods and planning lead to unacceptable reserve losses. The selection and planning of effective and economic production methods could be possible with three-dimensional modeling, accurate determination of spatial distributions of …
Coseismic Surface Deformation And Fault Model Of The 27 May 2017 Mw 5.2 Saruhanlı-Manisa (Western Turkey) Earthquake From Insar, Ahmet Murat Akoğlu
Coseismic Surface Deformation And Fault Model Of The 27 May 2017 Mw 5.2 Saruhanlı-Manisa (Western Turkey) Earthquake From Insar, Ahmet Murat Akoğlu
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The shortened revisit times and accurate orbits of the new generation of radar satellites like Sentinel-1 improved the applicability of the synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR) technique to investigate more moderate size events. Here the technique is used to characterize the 27 May 2017 Mw 5.2 Saruhanlı (Manisa) earthquake that took place in western Turkey in the Gediz Graben. Though seismological focal mechanism solutions of the earthquake clearly indicated that the event is due to normal faulting, the nodal plane ambiguity and the presence of two closely located faults in the epicentral region prevented the assessment of the causative fault. …

Zircon U-Pb Age And Hf Isotopic Composition Of The Carboniferous Gönen Granitoid Inthe Western Sakarya Zone Of Turkey, Firat Şengün, Osman Ersi̇n Koralay, Magnus Kristoffersen
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Gönen granitoid is exposed in the western Sakarya Zone and is overlain unconformably by a Jurassic succession. The medium to coarse-grained Gönen granitoid has mineral assemblage of K-feldspar, plagioclase, quartz, muscovite, and biotite. Accessory phases are apatite and zircon. In this study, zircon U-Pb age is combined with Lu-Hf isotopes, which are presented to reveal the magma source and possible petrogenetic processes that took place during the formation of the parental magma for the Gönen granitoid. U-Pb dating of magmatic zircons yielded a concordia age of 336.3 ± 2.9 Ma referring to the early Carboniferous crystallization age of the …
Fluvio-Karstic Evolution Of The Taşeli Plateau (Central Taurus, Turkey), Muhammed Zeynel Öztürk
Fluvio-Karstic Evolution Of The Taşeli Plateau (Central Taurus, Turkey), Muhammed Zeynel Öztürk
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Uplift history is an important factor in the structural patterns and karstification of the Taşeli Plateau. The morphological development of the study area consists of five stages according to its sedimentation, rotation, uplift, and climatic properties. (1) Shallow carbonates accumulated during the Early Miocene. (2) An emersion and drainage network developed as a result of the compressional neotectonic regime in the Late Miocene. (3) Dense joint systems were formed due to the ~40° clockwise rotation of the eastern limb of the Isparta Angle. (4) The climate of the study area changed as a result of rapid uplift from Late Pliocene …

Determination Of Deformations By Using The Psi Technique At A Common Dump Site Ofthree Different Open-Pit Marble Mines In Turkey, Fati̇h Poyraz, Yavuz Gül, Burakhan Duymaz
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Slopes are formed to carry out mining activities such as stripping, ore production, transportation, and waste management in open-pit mines. The instability of slopes is a potential source of risks for mine safety. An unexpected slope failure may damage people, buildings, and equipment in the immediate area. Moreover, it leads to the disruption of mining production and an increase in production cost. For this reason, the regular examination and systematic monitoring of slopes should be performed to determine the early warning signs of failure. Thus, it may be possible to reach acceptable risk levels and to plan and implement the …

Controls On Deep-Water Slope Channel Complex Fill, Propagation, Stacking, Andorientation In The Middle Eocene-Oligocene Kırkgeçit Formation, Elazığ, Eastern Turkey, Hasan Çeli̇k, Bryan Cronin
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Deep-water channels are well-exposed along the northern margin of the east-west oriented Late Paleocene to Oligocene Elazığ Basin of eastern Turkey. The deep-water slope channel complexes are characterised by their association with prominent normal faults, where they seem to have controlled their geometries at the northern margin. The channels were fed by coarse-grained sediment shed by subaqueous gravity flows such as high and low-density turbidity currents, and both cohesive and noncohesive debris flows, from elevated hinterland across narrow shelves and through canyons and gullies into the channels. The faulting and subsequent folding along the northern basin margin created a significantly …
