Soil Response To Cropping Sequences And Grazing Under Integrated Crop-Livestock System, Hanxiao Feng
Soil Response To Cropping Sequences And Grazing Under Integrated Crop-Livestock System, Hanxiao Feng
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Integrated crop-livestock system (ICLS) is helpful in diversifying a farm for improving its long-term sustainability and economic benefits. In the United States, the ICLS has been increasing in recent years because of its economic and environmental benefits. However, the impacts of ICLS on soil quality is not well documented in North Dakota. The objective of our study is to assess the impacts of cropping sequences and cattle grazing on the selected soil properties in the crop diversity and livestock integration practice. This study site was established in 2010 at the Dickinson Research Extension Center, Dickinson, North Dakota. The study design …

Impacts Of Integrated Crop-Livestock System On Soil Surface Greenhouse Gas Fluxes At A Farm Scale In South Dakota, Brant Douville
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Grazing and cover crops (CC) can impact soil nutrient cycling but may increase the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from soils. However, little is known about their impacts on soil properties and soil surface GHG emissions in an integrated crop-livestock system (ICLS) in South Dakota, USA. The present study was conducted at a farm scale at the Research Farm of South Dakota State University, Brookings, South Dakota, to assess the impact of cover crops and grazing on soil pH, electrical conductivity (EC), and bulk density (BD), and soil surface carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide …

Interactive Effects Of Cover Crops, Invertebrate Communities And Soil Health In Corn Production Systems, Claire Lacanne
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The adoption of regenerative farming practices is gaining traction, but the costs and benefits are not often considered on a systems level. Encouraging biodiversity and soil health is the goal of many agricultural practices used in regenerative farming; regenerative systems employ practices which abide by the two main principles of increasing biodiversity and decreasing disturbance, with the goal of encouraging ecosystem functioning to minimize inputs and maximize the productivity of a farm. I examined the management of corn (Zea mays) fields across four states in the Upper Midwest region of the United States. Regenerative systems in this study …

Constraining Boundaries And Extent Of The Charleston Uplift, Northeast New Madrid Seismic Zone, Using Shallow Seismic Reflection Methods, Clara Rose Rucker
Theses and Dissertations--Earth and Environmental Sciences
A recently identified 30 km by 7.2 km subsurface stratigraphic uplift, called the Charleston uplift, exhibits 36 m offset of Paleogene-Quaternary unconformity based on shallow borehole data. Two seismic soundings demonstrated relief in Paleozoic and Cretaceous reflectors across the northern boundary of the uplift, suggesting a structural origin rather than an erosional origin. This study collected and analyzed 18 additional shallow seismic soundings to confirm Paleozoic and Cretaceous offset across the boundaries of the uplift, to better constrain the surface trace of the uplift, and to examine potential extension into western Kentucky. One ground penetrating radar profile was taken in …

Grain Size And Organic Geochemistry Of Kattegat Sediment To Determine Paleoenvironments Of The Last Interglacial-Glacial Cycle, Taylor Ann Krolik
Grain Size And Organic Geochemistry Of Kattegat Sediment To Determine Paleoenvironments Of The Last Interglacial-Glacial Cycle, Taylor Ann Krolik
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Periods of glaciation followed by deglaciation are a result of the complex processes that drive climate on Earth. To understand these processes and the types of climate that they induce, sediment cores can be analyzed to extract data to determine depositional environment and relative sea level in an area. This project will investigate the particle size and organic geochemistry from a sediment core (IODP Expedition 347, Hole M0060A) taken outside the Baltic Sea, at Anholt Loch which is located in the southern Kattegat. The objective of this study is to better understand the depositional environment and relative sea level changes …
A Zooarchaeological And Geochemical Analysis Of The Faunal Remains From The Tripolye Site Verteba Cave, Ukraine, Sarah Heins Ledogar
A Zooarchaeological And Geochemical Analysis Of The Faunal Remains From The Tripolye Site Verteba Cave, Ukraine, Sarah Heins Ledogar
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This study combines zooarchaeological and geochemical analyses to examine the use of animals excavated from Verteba Cave (Ukraine), a unique archaeological site associated with the Eneolithic Tripolye culture (4900 – 2900 BC). Verteba Cave is atypical among Tripolye sites because it is located within a cave, and contains a large amount of human skeletal remains. Although research has been focused on understanding Tripolye subsistence economy, the strategies engaged for procuring domestic animals and the role of animal products in Tripolye life has been underexplored. The role of animals in social behaviors (i.e., mortuary practices, feasting) has not yet been thoroughly …
Depositional Stages Of The Eğribucak Inner Basin (Terrestrial To Marine Evaporite And Carbonate) From The Sivas Basin (Central Anatolia, Turkey), Özgen Kangal, Nazi̇re Erdem, Baki̇ Erdoğan Varol
Depositional Stages Of The Eğribucak Inner Basin (Terrestrial To Marine Evaporite And Carbonate) From The Sivas Basin (Central Anatolia, Turkey), Özgen Kangal, Nazi̇re Erdem, Baki̇ Erdoğan Varol
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Sivas Cenozoic Basin and coeval Central Anatolian basins such as Çankırı and Tuz Gölü are characterized by both marine and terrestrial sediments ranging in age from the Eocene to early Miocene. The evaporite regime here generally appeared during the late stage of Eocene transgression and persisted through the Oligocene time. However, marine-induced Oligocene evaporites are less known because of less paleontological evidence and regional tectonics and salt diapirism that mostly caused the destruction of their original stratigraphic positions. The Eğribucak area studied here, located about 25 km southeast of Sivas, provides a well-stratified key section to shed light on …

A Model For Estimating Parameters Of Rotational Landslideusing A First-Order Differential Equation, Cahi̇t Taği Çeli̇k
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
A first-order differential equation was developed and proposed as a search tool in the detection and determination of rotational landslides from two epochs of light detection and ranging (LiDAR) system data in the form of 3D points. To test the proposed method two epochs of LiDAR data were used: one before and one after a rotational landslide occurred. The first epoch of LiDAR data was real, while the second epoch of LiDAR data was simulated based on the first epoch to ensure one or more rotational landslides were included. From the last returns of LiDAR data of both epochs, two …

Petrogenesis Of Plio-Quaternary Basanites In The Gandom Beryan Area, Kerman,Iran: Geochemical Evidence For The Low-Degree Partial Melting Of Enriched Mantle, Seyed Javad Yousefi, Abbas Moradian, Hamid Ahmadipour
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
In the Gandom Beryan area, basanitic lava flows erupted from fractures in the Nayband fault zone and formed an area of about 300 km2 of basanitic rocks in the western part of the Lut Block. Olivine and clinopyroxene are the major phenocrysts in a microlitic groundmass for these basanitic rocks. The geochemical data show that Gandom Beryan rocks are basanite in composition and belong to intercontinental rifts related to alkali basanites. These rocks have low Fe/Mg ratios (Fe2O3t/MgO = 1.07-1.43) with low silica content (SiO2 = 44.89-48.26 wt.%) and are high-Ti basanites. The investigated rocks are characterized by a significant …

Estimation Of The Crustal Structure In Central Anatolia (Turkey) Using Receiver Functions, Begüm Çivgin, Bülent Kaypak
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The receiver function analysis method was used to determine the crustal structure in Central Anatolia, Turkey, by using teleseismic earthquake records. The method is based on the conversion of incident P waves into S waves reaching an interface in the crust or upper mantle and arrival of the converted wave to the station just after the direct P waves. A temporary seismic network, the Ankara Earthquake Monitoring Network (AnkNET), consisting of six broadband seismograph stations, has been deployed in order to monitor the seismicity in Ankara and its surroundings during the period of 2007?2010. In this study, the crustal structures …

Villeneuve, Judy Wu-Smart, Rebecca Y. Milsk, Keith Sappington, Kristina V. Garber, Justin Housenger, Gerald T. Ankley
United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
Ongoing honey bee (Apis mellifera) colony losses are of significant international concern because of the essential role these insects play in pollinating crops. Both chemical and non-chemical stressors have been implicated as possible contributors to colony failure; however, the potential role(s) of commonly-used neonicotinoid insecticides has emerged as particularly concerning. Neonicotinoids act on the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) in the central nervous system to eliminate pest insects. However, mounting evidence indicates that neonicotinoids also may adversely affect beneficial pollinators, such as the honey bee, via impairments on learning and memory, and ultimately foraging success. The specificmechanisms linking activation …

Atp Binding Cassette Sub-Family Member 2 (Abcg2) And Xenobiotic Exposure During Early Mouse Embryonic Stem Cell Differentiation, Mitchell B. Rosen, Susan C. Jeffay, Harriette P. Nichols, Maria R. Hoopes, E. Sidney Hunter Iii
United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
Background: ATP binding cassette sub-family member 2 (ABCG2) is a welldefined efflux transporter found in a variety of tissues. The role of ABCG2 during early embryonic development, however, is not established. Previous work which compared data from the ToxCast screening program with that from in-house studies suggested an association exists between exposure to xenobiotics that regulate Abcg2 transcription and differentiation of mouse embryonic stem cells (mESC), a relationship potentially related to redox homeostasis.
Methods: mESC were grown for up to 9 days. Pharmacological inhibitors were used to assess transporter function with and without xenobiotic exposure. Proliferation and differentiation were …

Nebraska Water Center: Faculty Publications
Agriculturally-dominated waterways such as those found throughout the Midwestern United States often experience seasonal pulses of agrichemical contaminants which pose a potential hazard to aquatic organisms at varying life stages. The objective of this study was to characterize the developmental plasticity of fathead minnow larvae in a natural environment subject to a seasonal episodic perturbation in the form of a complex mixture of agricultural stressors. Fathead minnow larvae were maintained at the Elkhorn River Research Station for a 28-d in situ exposure to an agrichemical pulse event.Minnow larvae were sampled after 14 and 28 days to characterize developmental plasticity through …
Co2 Adsorption On Volcanic Ash: Net Contribution Of Volcanic Eruptions To The Global Carbon Cycle, Lee New
Co2 Adsorption On Volcanic Ash: Net Contribution Of Volcanic Eruptions To The Global Carbon Cycle, Lee New
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Adsorption of co2 on mineral surfaces accounts for a small percentage of the terrestrial co2 sink. Volcanic ash is virtually free of co2 when erupted and has a high surface area resulting in a high capacity for co2 adsorption. Volcanism is commonly assumed to be only a source of co2, but pyroclastic eruptions can also potentially serve as a sink. Adsorption was investigated for 6 volcanic ash samples of andesitic composition from four volcanoes: Okmok, Redoubt, Spurr, and Tungurahua. The eruption of volcano redoubt released 0.75 x 109 metric tons of co2 and 55 x 109 kg of ash throughout …
Detection Of Sedimentary Depositional Cycles In The Salado Formation, Southeastern New Mexico, Scott Paul Milo
Detection Of Sedimentary Depositional Cycles In The Salado Formation, Southeastern New Mexico, Scott Paul Milo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
An abundance of evaporitic features is preserved throughout the approximately 2,000-foot-thick Salado formation that is present across west Texas and southeastern New Mexico. The formation and preservation of evaporitic features are largely influenced by hydrology, and so those found in the Salado represent an uninterrupted record of hydrogeologic conditions in what is now the southwestern United States during the late Permian. Because it is home to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) repository chamber, the salado has been the subject of countless studies ranging from areas of sedimentology, to geochemistry, to geotechnical engineering, to hydrology. However, until now there have …

A Comparison Of Pesticide Monitoring Programs, State Vs. Federal, Justin Marshall
Theses and Dissertations
Exposure to pesticide residues continues to be a threat to both human and environmental health despite increased efforts in the agricultural industry to control end-product levels. Multiple government agencies routinely sample and screen common agricultural commodities (fruits and vegetables) for pesticide residues, albeit to do so they use different commodity sampling methods and satisfy different program objectives. Often, results of such screening programs are used in a supplementary fashion in human and environmental health studies, but rarely are the results studied against one another. Six years of archived data (narrowed down from 14) of two separate pesticide monitoring programs were …
Subsurface Transport In A North Inlet, South Carolina Salt Marsh: A Porewater Salinity Model, Carolyn Ryan
Subsurface Transport In A North Inlet, South Carolina Salt Marsh: A Porewater Salinity Model, Carolyn Ryan
Theses and Dissertations
Subsurface transport in coastal salt marshes influences the nutrient budget of coastal environments, but is not fully understood. To expand our understanding of this transport, a simple numerical model was developed. The model simulated vertical transport of salt through the surficial muds at a North Inlet marsh on the coastal plain of South Carolina. To improve the model, a tracer study was utilized to calculate the average velocity of groundwater flow through the system. The model was compared with porewater salinity measured using tension samplers and passive diffusion samplers. Each method produced different, uncorrelated results. However, accounting for macro-pores in …
Characterizing Mineral Crystallographic Preferred Orientations (Cpos) Along The Eastern North American Margin In The Southern Appalachians: Implications For Middle And Lower Crustal Seismic Anisotropy, Laura Robles
Wayne State University Theses
The Southern Appalachians Mountains have a complex and distinctive tectonic history, characterized by structural deformation extending from late Precambrian throughout the Paleozoic. The Southern Appalachians, known as the Blue Ridge of western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee, is mainly composed of schists and gneisses, granitic and ultramafic intrusives, as well as a sedimentary portion. The main tool for understanding the composition and structure of the deeper parts of the crust that cannot be directly sampled by seismology. Seismic anisotropy is the directional dependence of seismic velocity, and it is an invaluable tool for interpreting the development of sub-surficial dynamics. Seismic …
