A Compact To Revitalise Large-Scale Irrigation Systems Using A Leadership-Partnership-Ownership 'Theory Of Change', Bruce Lankford, Ian Makin, Nathanial Matthews, Peter G. Mccornick, Andrew Noble, Tushaar Shah

Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute: Faculty Publications

In countries with transitional economies such as those found in South Asia, large-scale irrigation systems (LSIS) with a history of public ownership account for about 115 million ha (Mha) or approximately 45% of their total area under irrigation. In terms of the global area of irrigation (320 Mha) for all countries, LSIS are estimated at 130 Mha or 40% of irrigated land. These systems can potentially deliver significant local, regional, and global benefits in terms of food, water and energy security, employment, economic growth, and ecosystem services. For example, primary crop production is conservatively valued at about US$355 billion. However, …

Controlling Groundwater Exploitation Through Economic Instruments: Current Practices, Challenges And Innovative Approaches, Marielle Montginoul, Jean-Daniel Rinaudo, N. Brozovic, G. Donoso

Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute: Faculty Publications

Groundwater can be considered as a common-pool resource, is often overexploited and, as a result, there are growing management pressures. This chapter starts with a broad presentation of the range of economic instruments that can be used for groundwater management, considering current practices and innovative approaches inspired from the literature on Common Pool Resources management. It then goes on with a detailed presentation of groundwater allocation policies implemented in France, the High Plains aquifer in the USA, and Chile. The chapter concludes with a discussion of social and political difficulties associated with implementing economic instruments for groundwater management.

Hydrothermal Monitoring In Yellowstone National Park Using Airborne Thermal Infrared Remote Sensing, C. M. U. Neale, C. Jaworowski, H. Heasler, S. Sivarajan, A. Masih

Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute: Faculty Publications

This paper describes the image acquisition and processing methodology, including surface emissivity and atmospheric corrections, for generating surface temperatures of two active hydrothermal systems in Yellowstone National Park. Airborne thermal infrared (8–12 μm) images were obtained annually from 2007 to 2012 using a FLIR SC640 thermal infrared camera system. Thermal infrared image acquisitions occurred under clear-sky conditions after sunset to meet the objective of providing high-spatial resolution, georectified imagery for hydrothermal monitoring. Comparisons of corrected radiative temperature maps with measured ground and water kinetic temperatures at flight times provided an assessment of temperature accuracy. A repeatable, time-sequence of images for …

Anthropogenic Nitrogen And Phosphorus Emissions And Related Grey Water Footprints Caused By Eu-271s Crop Production And Consumption, Mesfin Mekonnen, Stephan Lutter, Aldo Martinez

Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute: Faculty Publications

Water is a prerequisite for life on our planet. Due to climate change and pollution, water availability for agricultural production, industry and households is increasingly put at risk. With agriculture being the largest water user as well as polluter worldwide, we estimate anthropogenic nitrogen and phosphorus emissions to fresh water related to global crop production at a spatial resolution level of 5 by 5 arc min and calculate the grey water footprints (GWF) related to EU-271s crop production. A multiregional input-output model is used to trace the the GWF embodied in the final consumption of crop products by the EU-27. …

Spatial Variation In Characterized Buried Soils And Legacy Sediments Of The Northeast Usa, Anna Marshall Jan 2016

Spatial Variation In Characterized Buried Soils And Legacy Sediments Of The Northeast Usa, Anna Marshall

Environmental Studies Honors Papers

The role of historical mill dams in transforming river systems, especially throughout New England and the mid-Atlantic Piedmont regions of the United States has recently emerged as a topic of debate amongst the scientific community. In both physiographic provinces, large postsettlement alluvium “legacy” deposits originating from colonial-era deforestation, agriculture, and ongoing hillslope land-use disturbances characterize the floodplains. Furthering land-use impacts, water-powered milling from the late 17th to early 20th century was historically intensive throughout Southeastern New England and Pennsylvania, aiding in the floodplain storage of legacy deposits behind mill dams. These geologically recent legacy sediments overlay comparatively organic-rich, pre-colonial buried …

Advancements In The Measurement Of The Cryosphere Using Geophysics — Introduction, Andrew D. Parsekian, John Bradford, Georgios Tsoflias, Steven Arcone, Bernd Kulessa

CGISS Publications and Presentations

Frozen regions of the earth are known as the cryosphere. The arctic, Antarctica, permafrost, ice sheets, and glaciers are some of the most challenging places to measure subsurface parameters, but they can also be some of the most important places to science and engineering research due to their susceptibility to environmental change. Ground-based, airborne, and space-borne geophysical methods are deployed to observe targets below the ground or in ice that may be difficult or impossible to measure using conventional direct observations and measurements. The papers in this special section address recent advances in instrumentation development and deployment and computational capabilities …

Revision Of Polycotylid Plesioaur Systematics (Sauropterygia Plesiosauria) And Description Of The Axial Osteology Of A Juvenile Polycotylid, Donald Joseph Morgan Iii Jan 2016

Revision Of Polycotylid Plesioaur Systematics (Sauropterygia Plesiosauria) And Description Of The Axial Osteology Of A Juvenile Polycotylid, Donald Joseph Morgan Iii

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The polycotylids were a clade of plesiosaurs that proliferated during the Cretaceous period. Despite recent research efforts, evolutionary relationships among polycotylid species remain unresolved. In this study, a phylogenetic analysis incorporating a large taxon sampling from the Polycotylidae was used to parse out the evolutionary relationships among the taxa. The main focus was to assign two polycotylid specimens from the Wallace Ranch to a formal species. A study on the axial osteology of the juvenile Wallace Ranch polycotylid was also performed, as the development of the axial column of a polycotylid plesiosaur has been poorly understood and may have phylogenetic …

Analyzing Pterosaur Ontogeny And Sexual Dimorphism With Multivariate Allometry, Erick Charles Anderson Jan 2016

Analyzing Pterosaur Ontogeny And Sexual Dimorphism With Multivariate Allometry, Erick Charles Anderson

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The relationships of pterosaurs have been previously inferred from observed traits, depositional environments, and phylogenetic associations. A great deal of research has begun to analyze pterosaur ontogeny, mass estimates, wing dynamics, and sexual dimorphism in the last two decades. The latter has received the least attention because of the large data set required for statistical analyses. Analyzing pterosaurs using osteological measurements will reveal different aspects of size and shape variation in Pterosauria (in place of character states) and sexual dimorphism when present. Some of these variations, not easily recognized visually, will be observed using multivariate allometry methods including Principle Component …

Stratigraphy, Sedimentology And Reservoir Modeling Of The Late Devonian Berea Sandstone/Siltstone In Northeastern Kentucky And Southeastern Ohio, Forrest Christopher Mattox Jan 2016

Stratigraphy, Sedimentology And Reservoir Modeling Of The Late Devonian Berea Sandstone/Siltstone In Northeastern Kentucky And Southeastern Ohio, Forrest Christopher Mattox

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The Berea Sandstone is a Late Devonian unit that interfingers with and overlies the Bedford Shale. In the study area, the Bedford-Berea sequence averages 120 feet thick based on geophysical logs. The Bedford Shale makes up roughly 45 feet of the interval and the Berea Sandstone makes up the remaining 75 feet. Horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing have caused the Berea to become one of the largest oil producing formations in Kentucky to date. Depositional models proposed for the Bedford-Berea sequence fail to explain the vertical successions of sedimentary structures observed in outcrop and thickness patterns within the subsurface. Thus, …

A Rapid Physical Habitat Assessment Of Wadeable Streams For Mixed-Land-Use Watersheds, Lynne Hooper, Jason A. Hubbart Jan 2016

A Rapid Physical Habitat Assessment Of Wadeable Streams For Mixed-Land-Use Watersheds, Lynne Hooper, Jason A. Hubbart

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Mitigating stream and river impairment is complex, particularly in mixed-land-use watersheds given the likelihood of integrated responses of stream restoration to coupled and ongoing terrestrial ecosystem disturbance and the need for periodic reassessment and maintenance. Traditional biological sampling (e.g., macroinvertebrate sampling or other biological indices) alone seldom identifies the cause of biological community impairment and large fiscal investments are often made with no apparent improvement to aquatic ecosystem health. A stream physical habitat assessment (PHA) can yield information that, when paired with land-use data may reveal causal patterns in aquatic physical habitat degradation and help to identify sites for rehabilitation …

Castillo, John Humphreys, Jihoon Jung, Shoumik Rahman, Amanda Richard, Thomas H. Jagger, Tachanat Bhatrasataponkul, Christian Gredzens, Paul Grady Dixon Ph.D.

Geosciences Faculty Publications

The statistical relationship between elevation roughness and tornado activity is quantified using a spatial model that controls for the effect of population on the availability of reports. Across a large portion of the central Great Plains the model shows that areas with uniform elevation tend to have more tornadoes on average than areas with variable elevation. The effect amounts to a 2.3% [(1.6%, 3.0%) = 95% credible interval] increase in the rate of a tornado occurrence per meter of decrease in elevation roughness, defined as the highest minus the lowest elevation locally. The effect remains unchanged if the model is …

Geostatistical And Statistical Classification Of Sea-Ice Properties And Provinces From Sar Data, Ute C. Herzfeld, Scott Williams, John Heinrichs, James Maslanik, Steven Sucht Jan 2016

Geostatistical And Statistical Classification Of Sea-Ice Properties And Provinces From Sar Data, Ute C. Herzfeld, Scott Williams, John Heinrichs, James Maslanik, Steven Sucht

Geosciences Faculty Publications

Recent drastic reductions in the Arctic sea-ice cover have raised an interest in understanding the role of sea ice in the global system as well as pointed out a need to understand the physical processes that lead to such changes. Satellite remote-sensing data provide important information about remote ice areas, and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data have the advantages of penetration of the omnipresent cloud cover and of high spatial resolution. A challenge addressed in this paper is how to extract information on sea-ice types and sea-ice processes from SAR data. We introduce, validate and apply geostatistical and statistical approaches …

The Spatial Sensitivity Analysis Of Evapotranspiration Using Penman-Monteith Method At Grid Scale, Sivarajah Mylevaganam, Chittaranjan Ray Jan 2016

The Spatial Sensitivity Analysis Of Evapotranspiration Using Penman-Monteith Method At Grid Scale, Sivarajah Mylevaganam, Chittaranjan Ray

Nebraska Water Center: Faculty Publications

The need to allocate the existing water in a sustainable manner, even with the projected population growth, has made to assess the consumptive use or evapotranspiration (ET), which determines the irrigation demand. As underscored in the literature, Penman-Monteith method which is a combination of aerodynamic and energy balance method is widely used and accepted as the method of estimation of ET. However, the application of Penman-Monteith relies on many climate parameters such as relative humidity, solar radiation, temperature, and wind speed. Therefore, there exists a need to determine the parameters that are most sensitive and correlated with dependent variable ( …

A Spatial Evapotranspiration Tool At Grid Scale, Sivarajah Mylevaganam, Chittaranjan Ray Jan 2016

A Spatial Evapotranspiration Tool At Grid Scale, Sivarajah Mylevaganam, Chittaranjan Ray

Nebraska Water Center: Faculty Publications

The drastic decline in groundwater table and many other detrimental effects in meeting irrigation demand, and the projected population growth have force to evaluate consumptive use or evapotranspiration (ET), the rate of liquid water transformation to vapor from open water, bare soil, and vegetation, which determines the irrigation demand. As underscored in the literature, Penman- Monteith method which is based on aerodynamic and energy balance method is widely used and accepted as the method of estimation of ET. However, the estimation of ET is oftentimes carried out using meteorological data from climate stations. Therefore, such estimation of ET may vary …

Overview Of The Endangered Species Program, Glen Smart Jan 2016

Overview Of The Endangered Species Program, Glen Smart

United States Geological Survey: Publications

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, we became increasingly aware, as a Nation, of declining populations of birds and mammals. Rates of extinction appeared to be skyrocketing and the situation was becoming critical. The country needed to take action to reverse this trend. The Federal government began to show interest in the problem and acknowledged that it needed to intervene on a hands-on basis. The Washington, D.C., office of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) began to promote a program, championed by Dr. Ray Erickson, senior scientist at headquarters, to initiate captive research and propagation of birds and …

CERCOM Reports

In 2016 the Center for Environmental Research and Coastal Oceans Monitoring (CERCOM) visited 9 locations in Great South Bay to monitor for dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, salinity, clarity, depth and temperature. This monitoring program has been conducted for the past 14 years. These parameters are critical in determining long-term water quality conditions in Long Island estuaries. Methodologies for monitoring parameters are provided by the Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater 20th Edition (1998). Criteria for determining water quality conditions in marine eco-systems are based on the type of contact (uses) people have with the water system. The …

A New Radiometric Date And Assessment Of The Last Glacial Megafauna Of Dream Cave, Derbyshire, Uk, Donald A. Mcfarlane, Joyce Lundberg, Guy Van Rentergem, Eliza Howlett, Chris Stimpson

KGI Faculty Publications and Research

The extinct fauna of Dream Cave, Derbyshire, has played a significant role in the history of British cave paleontology, a near-complete woolly rhinoceros from the cave having been famously illustrated in 1823. The fauna was not subsequently re-studied until 2000, with the publication of an indirect radiometric date by uranium-series disequilibrium dating of a presumed-overlying flowstone. Here we present a direct radiocarbon date of 43,330 +/- 1800 rcyBP, 45083 - 48613 calBP (1 σ) on a representative Bos/Bison bone, with additional comments on the fauna and the taphonomy of the site.

Rangeland Responses To Predicted Increases In Drought Extremity, David D. Breshears, Alan K. Knapp, Darin J. Law, Melinda D. Smith, Dirac L. Twidwell, Carissa L. Wonkka

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

Rangeland managers actively focus on the potential to induce a shift in a site to an alternative state, but predicted changes in climate, particularly the likelihood of more extreme drought, necessitate reevaluating risks for alternative states. • Rangelands will differ in their susceptibility to undergo state changes due to climate change in general and for droughts of the future, in particular, which may be hotter. • Trees, shrubs, and grasses are expected to differ in their sensitivity to drought, with trees likely being most sensitive; this affects the likelihood for state changes in grasslands, shrublands, woodlands, and savannas. • Considering …

Disruptive selection is a process that can result in multiple sub-groups within a population, referred to as diversification. Foraging related divergence has been described in many taxa, but many questions remain about the contribution of such divergence to reproductive isolation and potentially sympatric speciation. Here we use stable isotope analysis of diet and morphological analysis of body shape to examine phenotypic divergence between littoral and pelagic foraging ecomorphs in a population of pumpkinseed sunfish (Lepomis gibbosus). We then examine reproductive isolation between ecomorphs by comparing the isotopic compositions of nesting males to eggs from their nests (a proxy for maternal …
