Isotopic Evidence For Lateral Flow And Diffusive Transport, But Not Sublimation, In A Sloped Seasonal Snowpack, Idaho, Usa, Samantha L. Evans, Alejandro N. Flores, Achim Heilig, Matthew J. Kohn, Hans-Peter Marshall, James P. Mcnamara Apr 2016

Isotopic Evidence For Lateral Flow And Diffusive Transport, But Not Sublimation, In A Sloped Seasonal Snowpack, Idaho, Usa, Samantha L. Evans, Alejandro N. Flores, Achim Heilig, Matthew J. Kohn, Hans-Peter Marshall, James P. Mcnamara

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Oxygen and hydrogen isotopes in snow were measured in weekly profiles during the growth and decline of a sloped subalpine snowpack, southern Idaho, 2011–2012. Isotopic steps (10‰, δ18O; 80‰, δD) were preserved relative to physical markers throughout the season, albeit with some diffusive smoothing. Melting stripped off upper layers without shifting isotopes within the snowpack. Meltwater is in isotopic equilibrium with snow at the top but not with snow at each respective collection height. Transport of meltwater occurred primarily along pipes and lateral flow paths allowing the snowpack to melt initially in reverse stratigraphic order. Isotope diffusivities are …

Basal Characteristics Of The Main Sticky Spot On The Ice Plain Of Whillans Ice Stream, Antarctica, Tarun Luthra, Sridhar Anandakrishnan, J. Paul Winberry, Richard B. Alley, Nicholas Holschuh

Geological Sciences Faculty Scholarship

Understanding the processes that affect streaming ice flow and the mass balance of glaciers and ice sheets requires sound knowledge of their subglacial environments. Previous studies have shown that an extensive deformable subglacial sediment layer favors fast ice-stream flow. However, areas of high basal drag, termed sticky spots, are of particular interest because they inhibit the fast flow of the overriding ice. The stick-slip behavior of Whillans Ice Stream (WIS) is perhaps the most conspicuous manifestation of a subglacial sticky spot. We present new ice-thickness and seismic-reflection measurements collected over the main sticky spot in the ice plain of WIS, …

The Last Glacial Maximum In Central North Island, New Zealand: Palaeoclimate Inferences From Glacier Modelling, Shaun. R. Eaves, Andrew N. Mackintosh, Brian M. Anderson, Alice M. Doughty

Dartmouth Scholarship

Quantitative palaeoclimate reconstructions provide data for evaluating the mechanisms of past, natural climate variability. Geometries of former mountain glaciers constrained by moraine mapping afford the opportunity to reconstruct palaeoclimate, due to the close relationship between ice extent and local climate. In this study, we present results from a series of experiments using a 2D coupled energy-balance/ice-flow model that investigate the palaeoclimate significance of Last Glacial Maximum m

oraines within nine catchments in the central North Island, New Zealand. We find that the former ice limits can be simulated when present-day temperatures are reduced by between 4 and 7 ◦C, if …

Investigation Of Permanent Aerosol Source Regions Over Asia Using Multi-Year Modis Observations, Dashnyam Gerelmaa, Gin-Rong Liu, Tsung-Hua Kuo, Tang-Huang Lin

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This work examines the permanent aerosol source regions over Asia by analyzing 7-years data of aerosol optical thick-ness (AOT) product from MODerate Imaging Spectroradi-ometer (MODIS) onboard Aqua and Terra satellites. The analysis is carried out by taking the average AOT map during the years 2002-2008 over the region in different seasons, in which the permanent source regions will appear pronounced whereas the locations influenced by transport or any emissions that last for shorter time period will be smoothened. The results show four such main permanent source regions. Ang-strom Exponent (AE) aerosol product is used to infer about the possible type …

Magnetic Simulation For Possible Causes Of The Vanishing Of The High Magnetic Anomaly Belt In Central Taiwan, Yu-Ying Chen, Chengsung Wang, Yih-Min Wu, Shu-Kun Hsu Apr 2016

Magnetic Simulation For Possible Causes Of The Vanishing Of The High Magnetic Anomaly Belt In Central Taiwan, Yu-Ying Chen, Chengsung Wang, Yih-Min Wu, Shu-Kun Hsu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

A striking high magnetic anomaly belt (HMAB) trending almost SW-NE is situated along the continental shelf edge off the southeastern Chinese continent. It extends northeastward to central Taiwan and gradually vanishes there. In this paper, magnetic simulation is performed and compared with other geological and geophysical data to establish a better understanding of the nature of the magnetic source of HMAB and how it makes HMAB vanish. The magnetic simulation was performed with a geometrical constraint from the seismic velocity structure published in literature. Our simulation shows that there is a layer of material with high magnetic susceptibility (which should …

Mineral Physics Modeling Of The Effect Of Water On Crustal Seismic Velocity Ratios, Eric Lyman, Anthony Lowry Phd Apr 2016

Mineral Physics Modeling Of The Effect Of Water On Crustal Seismic Velocity Ratios, Eric Lyman, Anthony Lowry Phd

Student Research Symposium

This poster presents the relationship between the presence of water (H2O) in the make up of rocks at different levels in the crust. The relationships were calculated using Perple_x software to adjust the level of the different chemical and mineral make up of the rock. The densities were calculated using the velocity of primary waves and shear waves as collected by Tony Lowry. This study focuses primarily on quartz content. There seems to be at least a casual link between water content and quartz content.

Stable Isotope And Radiocarbon Analysis Of Modern Lacustrine Stromatolites Near Great Salt Lake, Utah, Jordan L. Jensen, Dennis L. Newell, W. David Liddell Apr 2016

Stable Isotope And Radiocarbon Analysis Of Modern Lacustrine Stromatolites Near Great Salt Lake, Utah, Jordan L. Jensen, Dennis L. Newell, W. David Liddell

Student Research Symposium

Stromatolites are accretionary structures that form mainly from bacteria colonization in subaqueous environments and comprise mostly calcium carbonate (CaCO3). They can be found throughout the rock record (Archean-present day) and modern stromatolites are now restricted to areas that have few or no grazing animals. The hypersaline Great Salt Lake in Utah is host to numerous modern stromatolites, which are currently exposed to the air because of low lake levels. Here, we present C and O isotopic data and radiocarbon dates from a transect of a stromatolite dome (SD-1-01). Carbon and oxygen isotopic values covary strongly along the transect and range …

The Importance Of Geologic Study For The Application Of Carbon Capture And Storage (Ccs) In Otsego County, Michigan, Matthew Rine Apr 2016

The Importance Of Geologic Study For The Application Of Carbon Capture And Storage (Ccs) In Otsego County, Michigan, Matthew Rine

Research and Creative Activities Poster Day

The most recent Paris climate talks emphasized the importance of reducing carbon dioxide pollution associated with burning fossil fuels. In an attempt to mitigate CO2 emissions, carbon capture and storage (CCS), which is a process by which CO2 is pulled from a smokestack before it is released into our atmosphere and buried deep underground, is currently underway in Otsego County, Michigan. In order to safely and effectively store CO2 into deep geologic formations, it is critical to gain a better understanding for the geologic “storage tank” in which these fluids will be stored. As part of this …

Morphodynamics Of Egmont Key At The Mouth Of Tampa Bay: West-Central Florida, Zachary James Tyler

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Egmont Key, located at the mouth of Tampa Bay, is part of a dynamic system with many interrelated natural and anthropogenic factors influencing its morphodynamics. This study started in August 2012. During the 3-year period until August 2015, 28 beach profile transects were established and surveyed 10 times. Seventeen historical aerial images from 1942 to 2013 were geo-rectified and analyzed. Three hundred and fourteen sediment samples were procured from the navigation channel dredge area and the beach nourishment area and analyzed for grain size. A numerical wave model was established to simulate the nearshore wave field. The overall goals of …

Monitoring The Alteration And Natural Recovery Of A Monsoon-Dominated Stream System After A Wild Fire Disturbs Its Watershed, Stout Canyon, Utah, Peter D. Christensen, Jennifer E. Hargrave

The Compass: Earth Science Journal of Sigma Gamma Epsilon

The alteration of a stream’s morphology and recovery following a watershed fire is well documented in streams where high flow events occur during spring runoff. However, there are very little data regarding the alteration and natural recovery of streams that have high flow events during the late summer monsoon rains. Stout Canyon, a tributary to the East Fork of the Virgin River, is located approximately 30 miles southeast of Cedar City, Utah, and is a monsoon-dominated stream system whose watershed was burned by the Shingle Fire of 2012. Employees of the Dixie National Forest have monitored Stout Canyon since 2002, …
