A Petrographic Analysis Of The Relationship Between Porosity And Organic Matter In The Permian Phosphoria Formation Of Northeastern Utah, Larry Tackett May 2014

A Petrographic Analysis Of The Relationship Between Porosity And Organic Matter In The Permian Phosphoria Formation Of Northeastern Utah, Larry Tackett

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The Permian Phosphoria Formation is a reservoir for oil and gas in the western United States, as well as a major source of phosphate. This study examined the relationship between phosphate richness and porosity exhibited in the formation. Petrographic analysis was carried out on rock samples collected from the Phosphoria (Park City) Formation located north of Vernal, Utah, on the southern flank of the Uinta Mountains.

The analysis demonstrated an inverse relationship between organic richness and porosity in the Phosphoria Formation. Porosity is controlled by lithology, amount of cementation, weathering, and amount of fecal pellets, which are the source of …

Ore Characterization Of The Estelle Property In The South-~Central Alaska Range, Ember Flagg May 2014

Ore Characterization Of The Estelle Property In The South-~Central Alaska Range, Ember Flagg

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The Estelle Property, located 170 km northwest of Anchorage, Alaska in the South Central Alaska Range, has been the focus of recent exploration activity for gold. Geological and geochemical investigations indicate that gold is spatially associated with felsic end-members of a series of zoned, Late Cretaceous intrusions that were emplaced into the Kahiltna terrane. A detailed study of outcrop and drill core samples was conducted to characterize host rock lithologies, intrusion compositions, and four main vein types including their mineralogy as well as their associated alteration mineral assemblages that are restricted to narrow selvages adjacent to veins. This study was …

Using Seismic Reflection To Locate A Tracer Testing Complex South Of Yucca Mountain, Nye County, Nevada, Levi Kryder

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Tracer testing in the fractured volcanic aquifer near Yucca Mountain, and in the alluvial aquifer south of Yucca Mountain, Nevada has been conducted in the past to determine the flow and transport properties of groundwater in those geologic units. However, no tracer testing has been conducted across the alluvium/volcanic interface. This thesis documents the investigative process and subsequent analysis and interpretations used to identify a location suitable for installation of a tracer testing complex, near existing Nye County wells south of Yucca Mountain.

The work involved evaluation of existing geologic data, collection of wellbore seismic data, and a detailed surface …

Modern To Late Pleistocene Stable Isotope Climatology Of Alaska, Alison Sloat May 2014

Modern To Late Pleistocene Stable Isotope Climatology Of Alaska, Alison Sloat

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Understanding modern controls on climate is necessary to interpret past climatic conditions. This project investigated the modern controls on δ18O and δD values in Alaskan surface waters to interpret the controls on Late Pleistocene climate variability. ArcGIS was used to develop an isoscape of modern δ18O and δD values of over 400 surface water samples collected across Alaska and the Yukon. It was found that winter temperature and precipitation have the greatest controls on δ18O and δD values in Alaska, resulting in high δ18O values along the coast of the Gulf of Alaska and low values inland toward Central Alaska. …

Finite Difference Modeling Of Surface-~Wave Scattering For Shallow Cavity Detection, Heston Travis Norcott May 2014

Finite Difference Modeling Of Surface-~Wave Scattering For Shallow Cavity Detection, Heston Travis Norcott

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Data collection and analysis of scattering of Rayleigh-type surface waves are investigated for locating shallowly buried cavities. Surface-based seismic experiments conducted by others at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Engineering Geophysics Test Site (EGTS) demonstrate scattering of Rayleigh waves caused by buried empty barrels (essentially air-filled cavities). The interpretation of the data is complicated by factors such as the presence of a high-velocity geologic layer just below the cavity.

This research uses a finite-difference seismic wave propagation code to compute time histories for a model that represents the Engineering Geophysics Test Site. By adding cavities to a background …

The Effect Of Single Crystal Elastic And Plastic Anisotropy On Stress And Strain Heterogeneity: Comparison Of Olivine To Other Common Minerals, Christopher Joseph Cline Ii May 2014

The Effect Of Single Crystal Elastic And Plastic Anisotropy On Stress And Strain Heterogeneity: Comparison Of Olivine To Other Common Minerals, Christopher Joseph Cline Ii

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

In order to investigate the influence of single crystal elastic anisotropy on the heterogeneity of stress distributions during polycrystalline deformation multiple deformed crystalline materials were analyzed using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). Deformation experiments were conducted on samples of Solnhofen limestone using a modified Griggs piston cylinder apparatus at UNLV, and also on San Carlos olivine using the D-DIA multi-anvil press at the National Synchrotron Light Source beamline X17B2. Analysis of the mechanical twins in deformed calcite and kink bands in olivine help elucidate deviations in local stress directions away from that of the applied macroscopic stress. Combined calculated compression directions …

The Application Of Zircon (U-Th)/He Thermochronology To Determine The Timing And Slip Rate On The Willard Thrust, Sevier Fold And Thrust Belt, Northern Utah, Bryan Eleogram May 2014

The Application Of Zircon (U-Th)/He Thermochronology To Determine The Timing And Slip Rate On The Willard Thrust, Sevier Fold And Thrust Belt, Northern Utah, Bryan Eleogram

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Although the Sevier fold-thrust belt is one of the best-studied foreland systems in the world, timing of motion on the dominant western thrust sheets that carry thick Neoproterozoic to Paleozoic strata remains incompletely understood. Zircon (U-Th)/He thermochrometry (ZHe) studies of the hanging wall of the Willard thrust sheet (WTS) in northern Utah are used to constrain the timing and rate of thrust slip. Previous interpretations of the age of initial slip on the Willard thrust vary widely from 150 to 115 Ma, reflecting ambiguous relations with foreland basin strata and limited geochronologic data. The large displacement on the Willard thrust …

Cova Des Pas De Vallgornera, (Mallorca, Spain): History Of Exploration And Cave Description, Antoni Merino, Antoni Mulet, Guiem Mulet, Antoni Croix, Anders Kristofersson, Francesc Gràcia, Miquel A. Perelló

International Journal of Speleology

The Cova des Pas de Vallgornera lies in the Llucmajor municipality, in southern Mallorca, and is the longest cave in the Balearic Islands. Currently its surveyed length is over 74,000 metres, including more than 17,000 of underwater extensions. The cave was discovered accidentally in 1968, but it was in 2004 when a major breakthrough shed light on its real extension and importance. The cave roughly shows two tiers of passages, apart from the underwater extensions, the first one is between 7 and 11 m above the mean sea level, the second one is about at the water table level. The …

Geologic Constraints And Speleogenesis Of Cova Des Pas De Vallgornera, A Complex Coastal Cave From Mallorca Island (Western Mediterranean), Joaquín Ginés, Joan J. Fornós, Angel Ginés, Antoni Merino, Francesc Gràcia May 2014

Geologic Constraints And Speleogenesis Of Cova Des Pas De Vallgornera, A Complex Coastal Cave From Mallorca Island (Western Mediterranean), Joaquín Ginés, Joan J. Fornós, Angel Ginés, Antoni Merino, Francesc Gràcia

International Journal of Speleology

The flat areas of eastern and southern Mallorca host a remarkable coastal karst, where Cova des Pas de Vallgornera stands out due to its length (more than 74 km) and its special morphological suite. The pattern of the cave is quite heterogeneous showing sharp differences produced by the architecture of the Upper Miocene reef: spongework mazes and collapse chambers dominate in the reef front facies, whereas joint-guided conduits are the rule in the back reef carbonates. Regarding the speleogenesis of the system, a complex situation is envisaged involving three main agents: coastal mixing dissolution, drainage of meteoric diffuse recharge, and …

Speleothems In Cova Des Pas De Vallgornera: Their Distribution And Characteristics Within An Extensive Coastal Cave From The Eogenetic Karst Of Southern Mallorca (Western Mediterranean), Antoni Merino, Joaquín Ginés, Paola Tuccimei, Michele Soligo, Joan J. Fornós May 2014

Fornós

International Journal of Speleology

The abundance and variety of speleothems are undoubtedly among the remarkable features of Cova des Pas de Vallgornera, the longest cave system in Mallorca Island developed in the eogenetic karst of its southern coast. Due to the monotonous carbonate lithology of the area, most of the speleothems are composed of calcite and in a few cases aragonite, although other minerals are also represented (e.g., gypsum, celestine, barite.). However, in spite of the rather common mineralogy of the speleothems, its distribution results strongly mediated by the lithologic and textural variability linked to the architecture of the Upper Miocene reefal rocks. Apart …

Cave Deposits And Sedimentary Processes In Cova Des Pas De Vallgornera (Mallorca, Western Mediterranean), Joan J. Fornós, Joaquin Ginés, Francesc Gràcia, Antoni Merino Juncadella, Lluís Gómez-Pujol, Pere Bover May 2014

Cave Deposits And Sedimentary Processes In Cova Des Pas De Vallgornera (Mallorca, Western Mediterranean), Joan J. Fornós, Joaquin Ginés, Francesc Gràcia, Antoni Merino Juncadella, Lluís Gómez-Pujol, Pere Bover

International Journal of Speleology

The Cova des Pas de Vallgornera is an important and protected coastal cave, located in the southern part of the island of Mallorca, that outstands due to its length and the complex processes involved in its speleogenesis. Although sediments are not the main topic of interest, their presence as well as their paleontological contents are valuable evidence for paleoclimatic and chronological reconstructions of the cave morphogenesis. The sedimentary infilling is characterized by a scarce presence of clastic sedimentation, mainly composed of silts and clays, which can only be found at some minor passages in the innermost parts of the cave. …

International Journal of Speleology

The Cova des Pas de Vallgornera is the longest cave of Mallorca (Balearic Islands, Western Mediterranean) and one of the 30 longest caves in the world. The exploration of one of the galleries allowed the discovery of a fossiliferous deposit of vertebrate remains in a remarkable preservation state. The fossil faunal complex found in this gallery is composed of up to 5 mammalian species (Myotragus aff. kopperi, Hypnomys onicensis, Nesiotites aff. ponsi, Rhinolophus aff. mehelyi and Pipistrellus sp.), at least 14 bird species (among them two Mallorcan endemic taxa: Pica mourerae and Athene vallgornerensis), one …

Groundwater Geochemistry Observations In Littoral Caves Of Mallorca (Western Mediterranean): Implications For Deposition Of Phreatic Overgrowths On Speleothems, Liana M. Boop, Bogdan P. Onac, Jonathan G. Wynn, Joan J. Fornós, Marta Rodríguez-Homar, Antoni Merino

International Journal of Speleology

Phreatic overgrowths on speleothems (POS) precipitate at the air-water interface in the littoral caves of Mallorca, Spain. Mainly composed of calcite, aragonite POS are also observed in specific locations. To characterize the geochemical environment of the brackish upper water column, water samples and salinity values were collected from water profiles (0-2.9 m) in April 2012 and March 2013 near aragonite POS in Cova des Pas de Vallgornera and calcite POS in Coves del Drac (hereafter, Vallgornera and Drac). Degassing of CO2 from the water was evidenced by the existence of lower dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentration and enriched δ …

Late Pliocene Ice-Rafted Debris Mass Accumulation Rates From Iodp Site U1359, Wilkes Land Continental Rise, Antarctica, Jessica Rosenberg

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

An assessment of sediments taken from the IODP (Integrated Ocean Drilling Program) Expedition 318, Core U1359A from the Wilkes Continental Land Rise, has been conducted at a high resolution to determine the response of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet to climate during the Late Pliocene. The section of core being studied dates back to ~3.7 to 2.7 million years ago (Ma). Studies can lead to an understanding of climate change in the future, from knowledge on how ice sheets have transformed in the past with similar atmospheric conditions to the present. Samples from this record were analyzed based on the …

Organic Geochemical Investigations Of Urban Sediments By Pyrolysis-Gas Chromatography / Mass Spectroscopy, Kevin Olsen May 2014

Organic Geochemical Investigations Of Urban Sediments By Pyrolysis-Gas Chromatography / Mass Spectroscopy, Kevin Olsen

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Pyrolysis-Gas Chromatography / Mass Spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) can be used to study the organic matter in sedimentary environments.

An urban sediment is not simply defined by proximity to a city. Because cities have anthropogenic contamination, one important urban sediment characteristic is ongoing recontamination. Another is legacy contamination from industrial activity and a third is the alteration of natural bio-geochemical systems.

Two case studies are presented. The surface sediments of the Gateway National Recreation Area were sampled during the summer of 2007. The ratio of two pyrolysis products, Vinylguiacol, from terrestrial plant lignins, and Indole, from proteins, (VGI Index) is moderately well …

Characterization Of Eocene-Oligocene Depocenters In Prydz Bay, East Antarctica : A Lithostratigraphic Correlation Of Odp Sites 739, 742, And 1166, Daniel James Ciarletta May 2014

Characterization Of Eocene-Oligocene Depocenters In Prydz Bay, East Antarctica : A Lithostratigraphic Correlation Of Odp Sites 739, 742, And 1166, Daniel James Ciarletta

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

The Eocene-Oligocene transition (EOT) marked a profound shift in the Earth’s climate, as the global greenhouse o f the early Cenozoic gave way to ‘icehouse’ conditions, or a climatic regime influenced by the waxing and waning o f glacial ice. Antarctica was dramatically altered during this time; its formerly cool temperate ecosystems nearly obliterated by the first major episode o f continental glaciation. A record o f this transition appears to be partly preserved in approximately half a kilometer o f sediments recovered from three holes (at ODP Sites 739, 742, and 1166) bored in the continental margin at Prydz …

Summer River Water Temperature Changes In The Musconetcong River And Their Potential Impact On Aquatic Habitat, Joseph Anthony Kowalski May 2014

Summer River Water Temperature Changes In The Musconetcong River And Their Potential Impact On Aquatic Habitat, Joseph Anthony Kowalski

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Water temperature changes in rivers can happen quickly for multiple reasons, and can drastically impact the river in many ways. The potential for temperature shifts to impact rivers is especially important in the summer, for aquatic habitats, as the warm temperatures can stress populations. This is especially true for trout populations, a temperature-sensitive fish. Since temperature is the most important factor in the growth of trout, these temperature changes can be life threatening. Therefore it is important to monitor temperatures in the Musconetcong River, classified as trout maintenance waters (Musconetcong Advisory Committee et al., 2003), because of the potential negative …

The Effects Of Changes In Population Density On Discharges For The Midwestern United States, Catherine Konieczny May 2014

The Effects Of Changes In Population Density On Discharges For The Midwestern United States, Catherine Konieczny

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

River baseflow is the river discharge supported predominantly by groundwater, and can be greatly impacted by changes in land. Intuitively, the baseflow of a river would decrease with increased urbanization, as urbanization increases the amount of impervious surfaces, limiting the ability of precipitation to infiltrate into the ground and recharge the local groundwater. However, evidence suggests that the baseflow of rivers in urbanized areas can increase as a result of leaky subsurface water infrastructures that add water to groundwater and replenish baseflow. Another reason for the baseflow increase in urbanized watersheds is that water supply systems are over-pressurized by design …

Estimating Nitrogen Fixation Rates, Importance, And Short-Term Efficiency In Small, Temperate Reservoirs Using Delta15n Techniques, Bryant Christopher Baker May 2014

Estimating Nitrogen Fixation Rates, Importance, And Short-Term Efficiency In Small, Temperate Reservoirs Using Delta15n Techniques, Bryant Christopher Baker

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Nitrogen (N2) fixation can give certain species of cyanobacteria a competitive advantage in lake and reservoir phytoplankton. These species of cyanobacteria, along with others that cannot fix N2, can form toxic compounds that impair water quality when present in high concentrations. N2 fixation rates may be substantial in small (< 1.0 km2), temperate reservoirs since these systems experience thermal stratification and often nitrogen (N) limitation throughout a substantial proportion of the year. However, the effects of N2 fixation on N cycling, alleviation of short-term N limitation, and water quality are not well-understood. A mesocosm experiment and ecosystem-scale observational study were conducted to 1) determine the efficiency of N2 fixation under varying N relative to phosphorus (P) supply, 2) examine the effects of N2 fixation on autotrophic biomass accumulation and microcystin production, and 3) measure N2 fixation rates and importance to autotrophic N demand and zooplankton N assimilation. Results of the mesocosm experiment indicated that N2 fixation was increased at low N:P supply under high P. However, N2 fixation was inefficient at alleviating N limitation when fixed N was the primary source of N. Additionally, microcystin production occurred only at high N:P supply when N2 fixation was low, indicating that reducing external N inputs may have a positive effect on water quality. Results of whole-reservoir determination of N2 fixation using seston δ15N natural abundances indicated that N2 fixation rates throughout the warm season were substantial and influenced by water temperature. Annual N2 fixation rates ranged from 2.2 - 6.6 g N m-2 yr-1, and contributed up to 19% of the annual autotrophic N demand. Zooplankton were assimilating fixed N in most of the study reservoirs, representing a possible mechanism of ecosystem fixed N retention. Collectively, these results suggest that N2 fixation plays a substantial role in N cycling in small, temperate reservoirs, but likely cannot alleviate short-term N limitation.

Continuous Tracking Of Lava Effusion Rate In A Lava Tube At Kilauea Volcano Using Very Low Frequency (Vlf) Monitoring, Richard A. Freeman May 2014

Continuous Tracking Of Lava Effusion Rate In A Lava Tube At Kilauea Volcano Using Very Low Frequency (Vlf) Monitoring, Richard A. Freeman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Measurement of lava effusion rates is a key objective for monitoring basaltic eruptions because it helps constrain geophysical models of magma dynamics, conduit geometry, and both deep and shallow volcano processes. During these eruptions, lava frequently travels through a single "master" lava tube. A new method and instrument for continuously monitoring the crosssectional area of lava streams in tubes and estimating the instantaneous effusion rate (IER) is described. The method uses 2 stationary very low frequency (VLF) radio receivers to measure an unperturbed VLF signal and the influence of highly conductive molten lava on that signal. The difference between these …

Depositional History And Stratigraphic Framework Of Upper Cretaceous (Campanian To Maastrichtian) Strata In The Minerva-Rockdale Oil Field Of Milam County And Adjacent Counties, Texas., Adam Thomas Martin May 2014

Depositional History And Stratigraphic Framework Of Upper Cretaceous (Campanian To Maastrichtian) Strata In The Minerva-Rockdale Oil Field Of Milam County And Adjacent Counties, Texas., Adam Thomas Martin

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

First discovered in 1921, the Minerva-Rockdale Oil Field (MROF) has experienced a recent resurgence of drilling. The targeted Navarro Group is Upper Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) in age and ranges in depth from approximately 100 to 3000+ ft. (subsea). Several thin elongated sandy zones within the Kemp clay of the Corsicana (Navarro) Formation, are the current targets for oil production. These sandy zones are informally divided into the Navarro `A' and `B' and their depositional morphology is described by the shelf plume model, as proposed by Patterson (1983).

Despite the mature nature of the MROF and surrounding area, only a small number …

Analysis Of Environmental Influences On Dressed Stone Decay: A Case Study Of Tafoni Development On A Hewn Djinn Block In Petra, Jordan, Kaelin M. Groom

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Petra, Jordan captivates tourists and researchers with its dramatic sandstone cliffs, Nabatean, Roman, Byzantine and Roman architecture, and rich cultural heritage. However, increasing tourism in the valley is exacerbating stone degradation and complicating heritage management. This research analyzed environmental influences on dressed stone decay via tafoni development and evaluating cell evolution on an isolated hewn feature, known as Djinn Block X. Resembling other sandstone blocks found in the area, this irregular sandstone monument exhibits faces ranging in size from 2.5m by 3.5m to 3.9m to 4.2m (29m perimeter). Protruding features, incisions along the top, and a large platform attached to …

Fertilizer Nitrogen Uptake Efficiency In Soft Red Winter Wheat And The Ability Of N-Star To Detect Alkaline Hydrolyzable Nitrogen In Crop Residues, Lana Aubrey Clark May 2014

Fertilizer Nitrogen Uptake Efficiency In Soft Red Winter Wheat And The Ability Of N-Star To Detect Alkaline Hydrolyzable Nitrogen In Crop Residues, Lana Aubrey Clark

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Soil testing methods such as the Illinois Soil Nitrogen Test (ISNT) and Direct Steam Distillation (DSD) have been developed which measure alkaline hydrolyzable-N (AH-N) as a means of estimating potentially mineralizable-N. Crop residues play an important role in N cycling. However, the ability of the ISNT and DSD methods to determine AH-N within crop residues is unknown. Therefore, the first objective of this study was to determine the ability of the ISNT and DSD to quantify potentially mineralizable-N within five different crop residues common to Arkansas. Corn (Zea mays L.), soybean (Glycine max, L.), wheat, rice (Oryza sativa, L.), and …

Structure And Stratigraphy Of A Complex Anticlinal Feature, Backbone Anticline, Arkoma Basin, Arkansas, Shailyn Marie Abbott May 2014

Structure And Stratigraphy Of A Complex Anticlinal Feature, Backbone Anticline, Arkoma Basin, Arkansas, Shailyn Marie Abbott

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Arkoma Basin of Arkansas and Oklahoma formed in the Ouachita foreland during the late Mississippian and Pennsylvanian periods (about 290-to 330 million years ago). The basin developed in response to convergent tectonic boundaries that closed obliquely from west to east associated with Ouachita orogenic event. The Backbone anticline in the northern Arkoma Basin is a prominent product of this convergence, and represents the first major component of this study. The structure is asymmetric with beds on the southern limb dipping steeply to the south. It is also expressed topographically as a prominent ridge that trends eastward from the Oklahoma-Arkansas …

Mechanical Stratigraphy Of The Mississippian In Osage County, Oklahoma, Caleb James Jennings May 2014

Mechanical Stratigraphy Of The Mississippian In Osage County, Oklahoma, Caleb James Jennings

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Mississippian formation of Oklahoma and Kansas has recently developed as a world class unconventional reservoir with wells producing up to 800 bbl/day. The Mississippian is composed of multiple distinct lithologic zones including limestone, hard chert, and soft tripolitic chert. These zones are difficult to discern with traditional log correlation, but mechanical stratigraphy has the potential to improve previous correlations of the Mississippian.

This study uses full wave sonic logs from Osage County, OK to analyze the elastic properties of the Mississippian. Our work computes isotropic elastic parameters in an effort to partition the Mississippian section into units that may …

Methane Emissions And Ammonia Volatilization From Drill-Seeded, Delayed-Flood Rice On A Silt-Loam Soil In Arkansas, Christopher Wade Rogers May 2014

Methane Emissions And Ammonia Volatilization From Drill-Seeded, Delayed-Flood Rice On A Silt-Loam Soil In Arkansas, Christopher Wade Rogers

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) currently uses a single methane (CH4) emissions factor of 160 kg CH4-C ha-1 for a primary rice (Oryza sativa L.) crop. The emissions factor is based on studies that do not adequately represent current management practices in Arkansas. Another concern is pre-flood fertilizer nitrogen (N) management, as the common N source, urea, is prone to loss via ammonia (NH3) volatilization. Thus, the objective of this research was to investigate trace gas emissions from rice on a silt-loam soil, including CH4 emissions as influenced by nitrogen (N) fertilization (i.e., optimal N and no N) in 2011, …

Structural And Stratigraphic Transition From The Arkoma Shelf Into The Arkoma Basin During Basin Subsidence; Arkoma Basin, Northwest Arkansas, Elizabeth Whitney Studebaker May 2014

Structural And Stratigraphic Transition From The Arkoma Shelf Into The Arkoma Basin During Basin Subsidence; Arkoma Basin, Northwest Arkansas, Elizabeth Whitney Studebaker

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Arkoma basin is an arcuate Paleozoic structural feature in the Ouachita foreland that extends from central Arkansas and westward into southeastern Oklahoma. The Arkoma shelf lies immediately north of the basin and is comprised of Cambrian to Pennsylvanian age sedimentary rocks. In northwestern Arkansas, the stratigraphic and structural transition from the shelf into the northern portion of the Arkoma basin is poorly defined.

Wireline logs were used to construct a series of three north to south cross sections, as well as two along-strike west to east cross sections to examine Morrowan and lower Atokan age strata. In addition to …

Porosity Development Within Lobes To Downslope Ramp Deposits On A Prograding Carbonate Shelf Of The Kinderhookian To Osagean Series In Northwest Arkansas, Elizabeth Marchese May 2014

Porosity Development Within Lobes To Downslope Ramp Deposits On A Prograding Carbonate Shelf Of The Kinderhookian To Osagean Series In Northwest Arkansas, Elizabeth Marchese

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Carbonate bodies with lobate geometries form a substantial part of the Osagean (early Mississippian) section in northwest Arkansas. The purpose of this study is to isolate and describe a single lobe from three-dimensional exposures in quarry walls to provide criteria by which lobe and lobe porosity can be recognized in the subsurface. Carbonate sediment generated on the Mississippian Burlington shelf moved southward by gravity flows from the shelf margin to positions on a prograding ramp in Arkansas where overlapping deposits with lobate geometries accumulated. These deposits are recognized in outcrops of the Boone Formation. Stratigraphic units within the Boone are …

Application Of Detrital Zircon Geochronology To Determine The Sedimentary Provenance Of The Middle Bloyd Sandstone, Arkoma Shelf, Northern Arkansas, Greg Michael Buratowski

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The sedimentary provenance of the middle Bloyd sandstone and subsequent sediment transport and dispersal patterns of the Early Pennsylvanian were interpreted by utilizing U-Pb detrital zircon geochronology. Eight middle Bloyd sandstone samples were analyzed. A total of 855 concordant analyses resulted. Peaks occurred at 350-500 Ma, 950-1200 Ma, 1300-1500 Ma, 1800-2300 Ma, and >2500 Ma. These peaks were determined to represent crystalline source rocks on the Laurentian craton from Acadian-Taconic, Grenville, Midcontinent Granite-Rhyolite, Yavapai-Mazatzal, Paleoproterozoic, and Archean Superior Provinces respectively. Grenville age zircons were the most common zircons identified in the middle Bloyd sandstone samples. The Appalachian Mountain region is …

3d Seismic Mapping Of Probable Tripolitic Chert Bodies In Osage County, Oklahoma, Richard Craddock Benson

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Mississippi Lime play is an important recent oil and gas development in the mid-continent of the United States. In April of 2007, Chesapeake Energy Corporation used horizontal drilling and tracing to bring the Howell 1-33H well online. This well revitalized the Mississippi Lime play, expanding exploration with potential Mississippian reservoirs.

The Mississippian section is a complex carbonate reservoir containing several distinct lithologies. An important Mississippian lithology known from outcrops in Arkansas and Missouri is tripolitic chert, or tripolite; a bleach, highly diagenetically altered, silica rock with high porosity, low density, and high permeability. Tripolite is an important reservoir target …
