Geology Faculty Research and Scholarship

Core HU97048-007PC was recovered from the continental Labrador Sea slope at a water depth of 945m, 250km seaward from the mouth of Cumberland Sound, and 400km north of Hudson Strait. Cumberland Sound is a structural trough partly floored by Cretaceous mudstones and Paleozoic carbonates. The record extends from ~ 10 to 58k cal a BP. On-board logging revealed a complex series of lithofacies, including buff-colored detrital carbonate-rich sediments [Heinrich (H)-events] frequently bracketed by black facies. We investigate the provenance of these facies using quantitative X-ray diffraction on drill-core samples from Paleozoic and Cretaceous bedrock from the SE Baffin Island Shelf, …

Fine Scale Sediment Structure And Geochemical Signature Between Eastern And Western North Atlantic During Heinrich Events 1 And 2, H. Rashid, F. Saint-Ange, Donald C. Barber, M. E. Smith, N. Devalia

Geology Faculty Research and Scholarship

Heinrich iceberg-rafting events 1 and 2 (H1 and H2) in the Labrador Sea are identified by their typical nepheloid-flow deposit sedimentary structure, high bulk carbonate, increase in iceberg-rafted detritus (IRD), and depletion of δ18O in the surface-dwelling foraminifer, Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (s). H-layers in this region have sedimentological characteristics different than those in the North Atlantic, and consist of IRD interspersed in pelagic sediments. High resolution 14C-AMS dates allowed us to delineate the leads and lags in instability between different ice-streams of the former Laurentide ice-sheet (LIS). Our data suggest that the discharge from the Hudson Strait ice-stream …

Sh-Wave Refraction And Reflection Investigation Of Quaternary Geology―Central United States Seismic Observatory, Carrington L. Wright Jan 2012

Sh-Wave Refraction And Reflection Investigation Of Quaternary Geology―Central United States Seismic Observatory, Carrington L. Wright

Theses and Dissertations--Earth and Environmental Sciences

The Central United States Seismic Observatory (CUSSO) consists of an array of vertical strong motion accelerometers and medium period seismometers that penetrate 585 m into the Mississippi Embayment sediments and terminates into Paleozoic bedrock. The array is located in the New Madrid Seismic Zone within the upper embayment. The thick unconsolidated Quaternary sediments have the potential to influence strong motions; understanding how these sediments affect ground motion is the goal of the CUSSO array. Nine SH-wave refraction and five P-wave common midpoint reflection surveys were collected within a 1 km radius around the CUSSO borehole in order to characterize the …

Geothermobarometric Analysis And Tectonic Evolution Of The Liverpool Land Eclogites, East Greenland Caledonides, Gabriel E. Richarde

Theses and Dissertations--Earth and Environmental Sciences

Mineral chemistry and thermobarometry of mafic pods in the Liverpool Land Eclogite Terrane (LLET) provide insight into potential relationships with regional high-pressure (HP) and ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) terranes such as the North East Greenland Eclogite Province (NEGEP), the Western Gneiss Region (WGR), and HP granulites in the East Greenland Caledonides at Payer Land. Grt-cpx thermometry and jadeite barometry performed on garnet and omphacite cores in a sequence of retrogressed eclogites give minimum and average P-T values across six samples for eclogite at 18.4 ± 3.7 kbar at 764 ± 156 °C. Granulite facies conditions based on early retrograde Opx-Plag symplectites, garnet …

Limnoarchaeology Using Commercially Available Side Scan Sonar: The Locks Of The Muscle Shoals Canal, Alabama, Robert Kavanaugh Jan 2012

Limnoarchaeology Using Commercially Available Side Scan Sonar: The Locks Of The Muscle Shoals Canal, Alabama, Robert Kavanaugh

Geography

This research aims to introduce, utilize and analyze commercially available side-scan sonar units as a viable scientific research tool in the interest of historic preservation and archaeological inventory of submerged structures and landscapes using a case study of the Muscle Shoals Canal in Alabama. Opened in November 1890, the nine locks of the Muscle Shoals Canal allowed traffic on the Tennessee River to circumvent the treacherous "Muscle Shoals", an achievement that replaced an abandoned attempt from over a half century earlier. The canal would continue operations until April 1918, when construction of Wilson Dam blocked river traffic through the canal. …

Assessing Delta Oxygen-18 In The Coral Genus Isopora For Reconstructing Indo-Pacific Regional And Seasonal Climate, Gavin Lemley Jan 2012

Assessing Delta Oxygen-18 In The Coral Genus Isopora For Reconstructing Indo-Pacific Regional And Seasonal Climate, Gavin Lemley

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Paleoclimate reconstructions often utilize coral reefs with very long time spans such as the genus Porites and Diploastrea, because of their potential to provide centuries of continuous climate records via geochemical signatures. Smaller corals, such as the genus Isopora, have been essentially unexplored as climate archives because their small skeletons (<1 m) and short lifespans (years to decades) do not provide such continuous geochemical records. There has not been a practical application for such corals until recently. In early 2010, the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Leg 325 (IODP-325) cored drowned fossil reefs off the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) with the objectives of reconstructing sea level and surface ocean conditions since the Last Glacial Maximum. Out of 213 massive fossil corals that were recovered, most were massive Isoporan colonies. A 30-specimen subset of these fossils range in age from ~32,000 to ~11,500 years before present with even temporal spacing, based on preliminary U/Th dating of core catcher samples. This age distribution is excellent for meeting IODP-325 objectives, but the suitability of Isopora for paleoclimate analyses remains unknown.

Assessing The Reproducibility Of Coral Oxygen And Carbon Isotope Time Series From Fiji And Tonga And Their Application To The Reconstruction Of South Pacific Convergence Zone Movements Since The Mid-1800s, Emilie Pauline Dassie

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

A major feature affecting the hydrology of the southern hemisphere is the South Pacific Convergence Zone (SPCZ); a band of high rainfall extending southeastward from the Western Pacific Warm Pool (WPWP). It is a key source of atmospheric water vapor and latent heating. While it is clear that the SPCZ plays a fundamental role in Earth's climate, little is known about the patterns and mechanisms responsible for interannual to century-scale changes in its position and how it may respond to global climate change.

Geochemical And Isotopic Constraints On Petrogenesis Of The Beypazarı Granitoid, Nw Ankara, Western Central Anatolia, Turkey, Yeşi̇m Yücel Öztürk, Cahi̇t Helvaci, Muharrem Satir

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Upper Cretaceous Beypazarı granitoid of the western Ankara, Turkey, is composed of two different units, on the basis of petrography and geochemical composition; these are granodiorite and diorite. The granitoid is subalkaline, belonging to the high-K calc-alkaline I-type granite series, which have relatively low initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.7053-0.7070). All these characteristics, combined with major, trace element geochemical data as well as mineralogical and textural evidence, reveal that the Beypazarı granitoid formed in a volcanic arc setting and was derived from a subduction-modified and metasomatized mantle-sourced magma, with its crustal and mantle components contaminated by interaction with the upper crust. …

Archaean Zircon U-Pb Age Paradox In Juvenile Neoproterozoic Granitoids, Central North Sudan, Saharan Metacraton, Shang Cosmas, Morteani Giulio, Muharrem Satir Jan 2012

Archaean Zircon U-Pb Age Paradox In Juvenile Neoproterozoic Granitoids, Central North Sudan, Saharan Metacraton, Shang Cosmas, Morteani Giulio, Muharrem Satir

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

It has long been shown that central North Sudan with its heterogeneous isotopic composition, unlike neighbouring Archaean cratons and the Neoproterozoic Arabian-Nubian Shield, is part of the Saharan metacratonic crust that was remobilized in the Neoproterozoic. In this paper, we report an Archaean zircon U-Pb age in the Saharan Metacraton that paradoxically does not indicate the presence of an Archaean crust. The second paradox concerns geochemical data that show Archaean tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite (TTG) features and also post-Archaean granitoid features, yet the rocks are Neoproterozoic. The granitoids studied are from north of Delgo in the Halfa terrane. They are calc-alkaline and meta- …

Carbon Isotope And Stomatal Data Of Late Pliocene Betulaceae Leaves From Sw China: Implications For Palaeoatmospheric Co2-Levels, Bainian Sun, Suting Ding, Jingyu Wu, Chong Dong, Sanping Xie, Zhicheng Lin

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The cuticular \delta^1^3C values and stomatal parameters (stomatal density and stomatal index: SD and SI) of two Betulaceae species, Betula mioluminifera Hu et Chaney and Carpinus miofangiana Nathorst, from a suite of superposed horizons in West Yunnan, southwestern China, were measured in order to recover Late Pliocene CO2 levels. Correlations are given for \delta^1^3C, SD, epidermal cell density (ECD), and SI. \delta^1^3C reveals a positive trend with the SD and SI in the two species, and such a positive correlation can also be observed between the \delta^1^3C and ECD in C. miofangiana. However, \delta^1^3C has a slightly negative correlation with …

Palaeoclimate Evolution In Siberia And The Russian Far East From The Oligocene To Pliocene – Evidence From Fruit And Seed Floras, Svetlana Popova, Torsten Utescher, Dmitry Gromyko, Angela Bruch, Volker Mosbrugger

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Cenozoic continental deposits of Western Siberia, Eastern Siberia and the Russian Far East are best described on the basis of carpological records. The palaeoclimate evolution has been reconstructed quantitatively (Coexistence Approach) providing inferred data on temperature, precipitation and the mean annual range of these parameters. Climate curves document the transition from very warm and humid conditions in the Late Oligocene via the Middle Miocene Climatic Optimum to a cool temperate climate during the Pliocene. Compared with other time intervals the Miocene climate is the most comprehensively reconstructed. For the Middle Miocene the Siberian and Far Eastern data are combined …

A New Late Holocene Eolianite Record From Altınkum Beach, North Cyprus, Ahmet Evren Ergi̇nal, Nafi̇ye Güneç Kiyak, Topçu Ahmet Ertek

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

In this study, we investigated the main depositional characteristics and obtained Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) ages of coastal eolianite on the north coast of Cyprus, where this occurrence had not previously been recorded. Based on EDX/SEM and XRD data and field observations, the studied eolianite that crops out between elevations of 1 m and 14 m a.s.l. is made up predominantly of quartz grains, most of which consist of medium- to fine-grained sand. The rock comprises aragonite, calcite and quartz with lesser amounts of bornite and hematite as accessory minerals. OSL ages indicated that the initial deposition of eolianite sands …

Porosity-Permeability And Textural Parameters Of The Palaeogene Forearc Sedimentary Fill On Lemnos Island, Ne Greece, Angelos Maravelis, Avraam Zelilidis

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Palaeogene forearc sedimentary fill on Lemnos Island, NE Greece, was examined to determine reservoir characteristics and textural parameters. During this time interval the studied area was the site of accumulation of submarine fans that underlie shelf deposits, with tectonic activity responsible for the shallowing upward trend. Turbidites were deposited in both inner (slope fan facies) and outer parts (basin floor fan facies) of the submarine fan system and consist of alternating sandstone and mudstone beds. Sandstones occur in both complete and incomplete Bouma sequences while shelf deposits have been interpreted as storm-surge deposits on the deeper parts of shelves. …

An Active Composite Pull-Apart Basin Within The Central Part Of The North Anatolian Fault System: The Merzifon-Suluova Basin, Turkey, Fuat Bora Rojay, Ali̇ Koçyi̇ği̇t

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The North Anatolian Fault System (NAFS) that separates the Eurasian plate in the north from the Anatolian microplate in the south is an intracontinental transform plate boundary. Its course makes a northward convex arch-shaped pattern by flexure in its central part between Ladik in the east and Kargı in the west. A number of strike-slip basins of dissimilar type and age occur within the NAFS. One of the spatially large basins is the E-W-trending Merzifon-Suluova basin (MS basin), about 55 km long and 22 km wide, located on the southern inner side of the northerly-convex section of the NAFS. The …

The Palu-Uluova Strike-Slip Basin In The East Anatolian Fault System, Turkey: Its Transition From The Palaeotectonic To Neotectonic Stage, Serap Çolak, Ercan Aksoy, Ali̇ Koçyi̇ği̇t, Murat İnceöz

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The East Anatolian fault system (EAFS) is the 80-km-wide, 700-km-long, NE-trending sinistral strike-slip fault system forming a seismically very active intracontinental transfom fault boundary. It is located between Karlıova County in the northeast and Karataş-Samandağ counties in the southwest, and forms the southeastern boundary of the Anatolian platelet. The Palu-Uluova basin is one of several strike-slip basins located along the EAFS. It is surrounded by several push-ups such as the Karaömerdağı, Mastardağı and Askerdağı push-ups caused by the complexities peculiar to strike-slip faulting. The Palu-Uluova basin consists of three sub-sections: two are NE-trending strike-slip sub-basins, the Uluova and the Palu-Kumyazı …

The Early−Middle Palaeozoic Oceanic Events Along The Southern European Margin: The Deli Jovan Ophiolite Massif (Ne Serbia) And Palaeo-Oceanic Zones Of The Great Caucasus, Guram Zakariadze, Stevan Karamata, Sergei Korikovsky, Aleksei Ariskin, Shota Adamia, Tamar Chkhotua, Sergei Sergeev, Natasha Solov'eva

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The paper deals with the Middle Palaeozoic oceanic events on the northern margin of the Eastern Mediterranean Hercynides. The Balkan-Carpathian Ophiolite Belt (BCO) and palaeo-oceanic zones of the Great Caucasus, all framing the East European Platform from the south, are correlated. The BCO palaeo-oceanic complex was widely thought to be a Late Precambrian-earliest Cambrian oceanic thrust sheet (563±5 Ma), a part of the South European Palaeo-oceanic Suture. The geochronological studies carried out on gabbroic series of the Deli Jovan Massif (BCO, NE Serbia), showed, however, that they are of much younger (Early Devonian) age: (a) Sm-Nd mineral isochron age of …

Tectonics Of The Strandja Massif, Nw Turkey: History Of A Long-Lived Arc At The Northern Margin Of Palaeo-Tethys, Boris Natalin, Gürsel Sunal, Muharrem Satir, Erkan Toraman

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Strandja Massif, Thrace Peninsula, NW Turkey, forms an important link between the Balkan Zone of Bulgaria, which is usually correlated with Variscan orogen in Central Europe, and the Pontides, where Cimmerian structures are the most prominent. The massif is composed of a Palaeozoic basement and a Triassic metasedimentary cover. The basement is made of various granite gneisses, paragneisses, and schists that are intruded by large plutons of monzonitic metagranites. Detrital zircon studies have revealed Ordovician (433 and 446 Ma) and Carboniferous (305 Ma) ages of the metasedimentary rocks. The isotopic age of the granite gneisses is 308-315 Ma (Carboniferous, …

An Elusive Carnivore Skeleton Discovered At The Ashfall Fossil Beds, Rick E. Otto

University of Nebraska State Museum: Programs Information

An articulated skeleton of the fossil dog Cynarctus has been revealed at the Ashfall Fossil Beds. Cynarctus fits into the subfamily of Canids known as Borophaginae, an extinct group - some of which are referred to as “bone-crushers”. Cynarctus and a few of its allies appear to have had an omnivorous diet; with dentition similar to Procyonthe modern raccoon. The skeleton, as well as a complete skull and mandibles of a separate individual also recovered from the volcanic ash bed, are the well-preserved remains of a species otherwise poorly represented in the fossil record.

The Global Drought Monitor Portal: The Foundation For A Global Drought Information System, Richard R. Heim Jr., Michael J. Brewer

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

The international scientific community has long recognized the need for coordinated drought monitoring and response, but many factors have prevented progress in the development of a Global Drought Early Warning System (GDEWS): some of which involve administrative issues (coordinated international action and policy) while others involve scientific, technological, and logistical issues. The creation of the National Integrated Drought Information System (NIDIS) Portal within the United States provided an opportunity to take the first steps toward building the informational foundation for a GDEWS: that is, a Global Drought Information System (GDIS). At a series of workshops sponsored by the World Meteorological …

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

While the microbial water quality in the Platte River is seasonally impacted by excreta from migrating cranes, there are no methods available to study crane fecal contamination. Here we characterized microbial populations in crane feces using phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene fecal clone libraries. Using these sequences, a novel crane quantitative PCR (Crane1) assay was developed, and its applicability as a microbial source tracking (MST) assay was evaluated by determining its host specificity and detection ability in environmental waters. Bacteria from crane excreta were dominated by bacilli and proteobacteria, with a notable paucity of sequences homologous to Bacteroidetes and …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Lower-Middle Miocene successions from Kütahya province (Seyitömer and Tunçbilek sub-basins) were analyzed to reconstruct the palaeoclimate and vegetation of the period. A rich coniferous forest formed the dominant components among sporomorphs and consisted mainly of undeterminable Pinaceae, Pinus haploxylon type, Pinus diploxylon type, Picea, Cedrus, Cathaya, Keteleeria and Podocarpus. Pollen data also indicate the presence of some fern taxa (Osmunda, Polypodiaceae, Schizeaceae) Selaginella and Lycopodium. Cupressaceae frequently occur in all samples from both sub-basins, and form part of the mixed forest assemblage. Two woody plants Castanea-Castanopsis and evergreen Quercus predominate in the assemblages as well. The reconstruction of palaeoclimate is …
