Geochemical And 40ar/39ar Constraints On The Evolution Of Volcanism In The Woodlark Rift, Papua New Guinea, Joseph Paul Catalano Aug 2012

Geochemical And 40ar/39ar Constraints On The Evolution Of Volcanism In The Woodlark Rift, Papua New Guinea, Joseph Paul Catalano

Earth & Environmental Sciences - Theses

The tectonic mechanisms producing Pliocene to active volcanism in eastern Papua New Guinea (PNG) have been debated for decades . In order to assess mechanisms that produce volcanism in the Woodlark Rift, we evaluate the evolution of volcanism in eastern PNG using 40Ar/39Ar thermochronology and whole rock geochemistry.

Active volcanism in southeastern Papua New Guinea occurs on the Papuan Peninsula (Mt. Lamington, Mt. Victory and Waiwa), in the Woodlark Rift (Dobu Island, SE Goodenough Island, and Western Fergusson Island), and in the Woodlark Basin . In the Woodlark Basin, seafloor spreading is active and decompression melting of the upper mantle …

Investigation Of Spillover Effect To Enhance Hydrogen Storage, Sarah C. Corrigan, Lin Simpson, Thomas Gennett Aug 2012

Investigation Of Spillover Effect To Enhance Hydrogen Storage, Sarah C. Corrigan, Lin Simpson, Thomas Gennett

STAR Program Research Presentations

Hydrogen is an attractive energy option because of its low
environmental impact, but a critical problem is its low energy
density, which makes it difficult to store. For example, the US
Department of Energy (DOE) hydrogen plan for fuel cell powered
vehicles requires a gravimetric density of 6.5 wt%. There are several
existing hydrogen storage methods, including compressed gas,
liquefaction, metal hydrides, and physisorption, but at present, none
of these technologies comes close to achieving the targets set by the
DOE. Although chemical storage methods have been claimed to be the
most promising hydrogen storage technology, and activated carbons the …

Pastoral Lease Assessment Using Geospatial Analysis, T P. Robinson, P E. Novelly, R Corner, Philip Thomas, A Russell-Browm Aug 2012

Pastoral Lease Assessment Using Geospatial Analysis, T P. Robinson, P E. Novelly, R Corner, Philip Thomas, A Russell-Browm

Resource management technical reports

Seven remote sensing based Vegetation Indices (NDSVI, STVI-3, NDVI, Green + Red, Red, Land Monitor and STVI-1) were tested for their potential to discriminate between “poor” and “good” range condition assessments in Western Australia’s pastoral rangelands. Indices were computed using the Australian Greenhouse Office National Carbon Accounting System (AGO NCAS) repository of calibrated Landsat TM/ETM+ mosaics. Discrimination potential was assessed at two levels of stratification – station level (identical to the stratification used to collect the traverse data), and functional group level (an aggregation of similar land systems);

Investigating The Utility Of Detrital Mineral Microchemistry And Radiogenic Isotope Compositions As Provenance Discriminators, Jack Hietpas Aug 2012

Investigating The Utility Of Detrital Mineral Microchemistry And Radiogenic Isotope Compositions As Provenance Discriminators, Jack Hietpas

Earth & Environmental Sciences - Dissertations

The provenance of clastic sediments remains one of the key tools for understanding the complex dynamic history of the Earth. Detritus shed from ancient orogens may be the only evidence available for determining the timing, evolution, paleogeography, and existence of tectonic events active over the 4.56 Ga of Earth history. The focus of this dissertation research is to assess the strengths and limitations of existing, as well as novel, tools for determining the provenance of siliciclastic sediments.

The utility of detrital monazite crystallization ages was investigated as a provenance indicator in both modern and ancient sedimentary systems. The results from …

The Chemical Evolution Of Oceanic And Continental Lithosphere: Case Studies In The Us Cordillera, Marlon Mauricio Jean Aug 2012

The Chemical Evolution Of Oceanic And Continental Lithosphere: Case Studies In The Us Cordillera, Marlon Mauricio Jean

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Among the terrestrial planets, only Earth has volcanism and plutonism that is related to plate tectonics. At the bottom of the oceans, mid-ocean ridges form where tectonic plates drift apart. More visible, and explosively dangerous, is volcanism related to the subduction of oceanic plates back into the Earth’s mantle. Less clear is the origin of the third major type of volcanism, the so-called intra-plate volcanism, which is thought to represent thermally driven upwellings from the lower mantle. This dissertation investigates two of these unique volcano-tectonic settings which occur in the western United States.

Subduction zones are regions of intense earthquake …

Sediment Mixing In The Tropical Pacific And Radiolarian Stratigraphy, Ted C. Moore Jr, Larry A. Mayer, Mitchell Lyle Aug 2012

Sediment Mixing In The Tropical Pacific And Radiolarian Stratigraphy, Ted C. Moore Jr, Larry A. Mayer, Mitchell Lyle

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

The reworking of older radiolarian microfossils into near-surface sediments of the tropical Pacific has long been the source of confusion for the development of radiolarian stratigraphy and of puzzlement over the mechanism(s) that could effect such pervasive reworking. Widespread dissolution “pits” in the sediments of the tropical Pacific are believed to be associated with hydrothermal circulation cells in the older oceanic crust and are here linked to processes which expose older sections and inject older non-carbonate material into near-bottom waters. Discharging waters of these circulation cells tend to dissolve carbonate in near-surface sediments; thus, only the non-carbonate material (including radiolarians) …

Raman Mapping Of Mars Relevant Minerals Using Multiple Excitation Wavelenghts, Victoria Campbell, William Abbey Aug 2012

Raman Mapping Of Mars Relevant Minerals Using Multiple Excitation Wavelenghts, Victoria Campbell, William Abbey

STAR Program Research Presentations

The purpose of this project is to map Mars relevant minerals using the Raman instrument Horiba LabRam Raman. The Raman spectrometer is a non-invasive sampling technique used to identify mineral composition of various compositions by measuring the “Raman Shift” of each mineral. This was accomplished by using a green (532nm) laser which acted as a monochromatic light source. This source was absorbed by the sample and reemitted. The frequency of the reemitted photons are then shifted up or down in comparison with original frequency, which is referred to as the ‘Raman Effect’. The samples with shorter wavelengths produced a stronger …

Statistical Clustering Of Microseismic Event Spectra To Identify Subsurface Structure, Deborah Kay Fagan Aug 2012

Statistical Clustering Of Microseismic Event Spectra To Identify Subsurface Structure, Deborah Kay Fagan

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Understanding subsurface structure by studying microseismicity influences a wide range of activities, including energy extraction, aquifer storage, carbon sequestration, and seismic hazard assessment. Identifying individual fractures in a larger fault system is key to characterizing, understanding, and potentially mitigating risks of natural or induced seismicity.

A year-long study associated with a carbon dioxide (CO2) sequestration project was conducted at the Aneth oil field in southeast Utah to record microseismicity at a single downhole geophone array. A previous analysis located events by first identifying event multiplets consisting of highly correlated time-domain waveforms on receivers shallower than the depth of …

Monitoring Co2 Sequestration In Basalt With Elastic Waves, Larry Thomas Otheim Aug 2012

Monitoring Co2 Sequestration In Basalt With Elastic Waves, Larry Thomas Otheim

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

The continued burning of fossil fuels as a source of energy is contributing to greater concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere. Increased levels of CO2 in the atmosphere have been linked to an increase of global mean surface temperature. To mitigate the continued release of CO2, projects to capture this gas at large point sources and sequester it in geologic formations are in place. Carbon dioxide sequestration in basalts promises permanent trapping of the fluid as these rocks react with carbonic acid and precipitate carbonate minerals. It is important to monitor the injection …

Holocene Earthquakes And Late Pleistocene Slip-Rate Estimates On The Wassuk Range Fault Zone, Nevada, J. M. Bormann, Benjamin E. Surpless, M. W. Caffee, S. G. Wesnousky Aug 2012

Holocene Earthquakes And Late Pleistocene Slip-Rate Estimates On The Wassuk Range Fault Zone, Nevada, J. M. Bormann, Benjamin E. Surpless, M. W. Caffee, S. G. Wesnousky

Earth and Environmental Geosciences Faculty Research

The Wassuk Range fault zone is an 80‐km‐long, east‐dipping, high‐angle normal fault that flanks the eastern margin of the Wassuk Range in central Nevada. Observations from two alluvial fan systems truncated by the fault yield information on the vertical slip rate and Holocene earthquake history along the range front. At the apex of the Rose Creek alluvial fan, radiocarbon dating of offset stratigraphy exposed in two fault trenches shows that multiple earthquakes resulted in 7.0 m of vertical offset along the fault since ∼9400 cal B.P. These data yield a Holocene vertical slip rate of 0.7±0.1  mm/yr. The south trench …

Reservoir Characterization And Enhanced Oil Recovery Potential In Middle Devonian Dundee Limestone Reservoirs, Michigan Basin, Usa, Abrahim Abduslam

Masters Theses

Middle Devonian Rogers City and subjacent Dundee Limestone formations have combined oil production in excess of 375 MMBO. In general, hydrocarbon production occurs in two distinct reservoir types: 1) bottom water drive, fractured dolomite reservoirs in the Rogers City and 2) gas expansion drive, depositional facies controlled limestone reservoirs of the Dundee.

The main objective of this study is to evaluate the enhanced oil recovery (EOR) potential in Dundee Limestone reservoirs on the basis of detailed geological reservoir characterization in several fields in the Michigan Basin. Seven main depositional facies were identified from core studies in six fields. Three of …

Paleoseismic Study Of The Stewart Valley And Northern Pahrump Segments Of The Stateline Fault System, Nevada, Jonathan Carter

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The Stateline fault system (SFS) is a ~200 km long zone of dextral faults running NW along the NV/CA border from Primm, Nevada to Amargosa Valley in the western Central Basin and Range province (CBR). Because of size and proximity, the SFS poses a hazard to the 2.5 million people, most of who live within 10 km, in Pahrump, Nevada and within 40 km, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The goals of this thesis are to (1) understand if the SFS is accommodating faulting slip change in the CBR; (2) test the along strike continuity of the SFS in Pahrump and …

Petrogenesis Of The Linked River Mountains Volcanic Section And Wilson Ridge Pluton, Denise Kelly Honn Aug 2012

Petrogenesis Of The Linked River Mountains Volcanic Section And Wilson Ridge Pluton, Denise Kelly Honn

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The River Mountains (RM) volcanic suite and Wilson Ridge pluton (WRP), in the northern Colorado River extensional corridor of southern Nevada and northwestern Arizona, provide an ideal opportunity to investigate one of the most fundamental questions in igneous petrology: Do volcanic rocks erupt from subjacent plutons and do plutons vent to form volcanic fields? The RM volcanic suite (14.47± 0.26 to 12.66 ± 0.54 Ma; uncertainties are 2sigma) consists of a stack of andesite and rhyolite sills beneath a stratovolcano that primarily erupted dacite with lesser volumes of basalt and rhyolite. This volcanic suite is cored by a multiphase quartz …

Evaluation Of Possible Source Rocks In Northern Nye County, Nevada: Implications For Hydrocarbon Exploration, Inessa Yurchenko Aug 2012

Evaluation Of Possible Source Rocks In Northern Nye County, Nevada: Implications For Hydrocarbon Exploration, Inessa Yurchenko

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The presence of oil outside of Railroad Valley, northern Nye County has sparked the interest of exploration companies in Nevada. The geology in this region is very complex and the level of petroleum exploration is low. In order to understand the distribution of oil, a complete petroleum systems analysis is required. Previous studies confirmed that the Mississippian Chainman Shale and Cretaceous to Paleocene Sheep Pass Formation, Member B are source rocks. However, a number of other possible source rocks exist in northern Nye County, but they are not confirmed because of incomplete datasets. The goal of this thesis project is …

Determining The Motion And Location Of The Frenchman Mountain Fault, Las Vegas, Nevada: A Paired Basin Analysis And Structural Analysis, Laura Margaret Eaton

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Understanding the evolution of large-scale fault systems remains a challenge to geologists and is of critical importance in understanding the dynamics of larger plate tectonic interactions. I mapped the southwestern Frenchman Mountain Fault (FMF), conducted a basin analysis of units in the footwall of the fault, and measured kinematic indicators along the fault zone in order to constrain fault offset, magnitude, and timing in an attempt to further our understanding of these systems.

My findings include: 1) the presence of vertical and sub-vertical slickenlines on southwest dipping fault surfaces indicative of normal sense offset; 2) relatively little lateral variation in …

Biogeochemical Processes In Hydrosoil Of A Pilot-Scale Constructed Wetland Treatment System Designed For Treatment Of Metals, Kristen Jurinko Aug 2012

Biogeochemical Processes In Hydrosoil Of A Pilot-Scale Constructed Wetland Treatment System Designed For Treatment Of Metals, Kristen Jurinko

All Theses

Environmental conditions, metal (Cd, Cu, Ni, and Zn) distribution, and metal fractionation in hydrosoil (sediment and overlying organic detritus) of a free water surface pilot-scale constructed wetland treatment system (CWTS) were investigated to determine treatment processes. Chemical and mineralogical analyses were performed on organic detritus samples and sediment cores collected from two cells planted with Schoenoplectus californicus and two cells planted with Typha angustifolia. T-tests indicate that cells planted with S. californicus and those planted with T. angustifolia were equally effective in promoting conditions in the detritus favorable for sorption of metals and complexation with acid-volatile sulfide (AVS). For the …

Selenium Removal In Nutrient-Amended Pilot-Scale Constructed Wetland Treatment Systems, Peter Van Heest

All Theses

ABSTRACT
In a year-long study, pilot-scale constructed wetland treatment systems (CWTSs) targeted removal of selenium (Se) from a simulated impaired water through dissimilatory Se reduction. Effects of temperature and precipitation on the treatment of Se in the CWTSs were investigated. The experimental design consisted of CWTSs amended with a fermented yeast product (AquaSmartTM, Diamond V¨, Cedar Rapids, IA), which served as a nutrient source for Se-reducing bacteria, at mass loadings of 1.75, 3.5, 5.25, 7, and 8.75 mg/min. The 5 µg/L treatment goal for CWTS outflow concentration was measured in 69 of 378 samples taken from all CWTSs. Of the …

Whether the investigation is being conducted remotely using imagers, radars or physically using penetrometers or drills, a pre-existed knowledge of the mechanical and electrical properties of the subsurface regolith should be acquired for better data interpretation and analysis. Therefore, the main objective of this work is to investigate the mechanical and electrical properties of planetary analogs, understand their role for assessing the subsurface structure …

Orbital Periodicities Reflected In Ancient Surfaces Of Our Solar System And The Implications For A Record Of Early Life, Dixie Lee Androes Aug 2012

Orbital Periodicities Reflected In Ancient Surfaces Of Our Solar System And The Implications For A Record Of Early Life, Dixie Lee Androes

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Uniformitarian processes, governed by invariant physical laws, remain the most reliable source for reconstructing the past. Driving many of the repetitive, predictable processes are the orbital dynamics of the Sun-Planet-Moon systems. Astronomical periodicities range from a few hours (tides) to thousands of years (Milankovitch). These periodicities, combined with geomorphic observations of planetary surfaces, constrain the time-dependent processes and allow for reconstruction of events and conditions favorable for sedimentary accumulations. This research suggests that seasonal sedimentary processes are dominant on Titan and Mars, and have played a significant role in the formation of ancient banded-iron formations (BIF's) on Earth.

The Case Of Canoe Brook Wells In Glacial Sand And Gravel, Livingston, New Jersey : Establishing The Hydraulic Signs Of Well Contamination Risk Using Topography, Brian Frank Aug 2012

The Case Of Canoe Brook Wells In Glacial Sand And Gravel, Livingston, New Jersey : Establishing The Hydraulic Signs Of Well Contamination Risk Using Topography, Brian Frank

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

When little groundwater level data is available, the potential energy gradients reflected in the topography, assumed to be saturated to the surface, can be used to estimate the directions and relative rates of groundwater flow (flow systems). Darcy’s law conveniently relates groundwater water levels to the rate of groundwater flow. Toth (1963) related topography to groundwater flow systems. Flow systems can transport surface contamination, if present, to wells. The topography and likely contamination point source surface locations were used to create and contrast the flow systems impacting two wells in order to assess contamination risk. The two wells, Canoe Brook …
