Geosciences: Faculty Publications

The Paleocene Tongue River Member of the Fort Union Formation contains trace-fossil associations indicative of marine influence in otherwise freshwater facies. The identified ichnogenera include: Arenicolites, Diplocraterion, Monocraterion, Ophiomorpha, Rhizocorallium, Skolithos linearis, Teichichnus, Thalassinoides, and one form of uncertain affinity. Two species of the marine diatom Coscinodiscus occur a few meters above the base of the member. The burrows occur in at least five discrete, thin, rippled, fine-grained sandstone beds within the lower 85 m of the member west of the Cedar Creek anticline (CCA) in the Signal Butte, Terry Badlands, and Pine Hills areas. Two discrete burrowed beds …

Upper Mantle Reflectivity Beneath An Intracratonic Basin: Insights Into The Behavior Of The Mantle Beneath Illinois Basin., Maxwell Sunday Okure Jun 2005

Upper Mantle Reflectivity Beneath An Intracratonic Basin: Insights Into The Behavior Of The Mantle Beneath Illinois Basin., Maxwell Sunday Okure

Theses and Dissertations

Reflectivity images of the lower crust and uppermost mantle beneath the Illinois basin have been derived from reprocessing of several hundred kilometers of industry seismic reflection data using extended vibroseis recorrelation. The recorrelation was based on extending an originally 4-s correlated record, acquired with a 16-s sweep from 14 to 126 Hz, to the absolute limit of the full 20 s (~70 km) listening travel time. The reconstructed bandwidth includes frequency components suitable for imaging structures from signals received from both sedimentary basin reflectors and those received from reflectors in the deep crust and upper mantle. Mantle and sub-Moho reflectors …

Interaction Of Sea Ice Sediments And Surface Sea Water In The Arctic Ocean: Evidence From Excess 210Pb, M. Baskaran Jun 2005

Interaction Of Sea Ice Sediments And Surface Sea Water In The Arctic Ocean: Evidence From Excess 210Pb, M. Baskaran

Environmental Science and Geology Faculty Research Publications

We measured the activities of 210Pb, 226Ra, 238U and 137Cs in a suite of ice-rafted sediments (IRS) from the Arctic Ocean in an attempt to assess the interaction of sea ice sediments and surface water. The concentrations of these nuclides were compared to those of the benthic sediments in the coastal and shelf regions of the Arctic Ocean, which are believed to be the major source region for the IRS. The concentration factors (CF = activity of a nuclide in IRS/average activity in benthic sediments) are ∼1 and 4-92 for 137Cs and 210Pb, respectively. …

ANDRILL Project Information

Response of Antarctic ice sheets to projected greenhouse warming of up to 5.8!C by the end of the century is not known. Models on which predictions are based need to be constrained by geological data of the ancient ice sheets during times when Earth is known to have been warmer than today. The marine-based West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) and its fringing ice shelves are hypothesized (Clark et al., 2002; Weaver et al., 2003; Stocker, 2003) and documented (Scherer et al., 1998) to have collapsed during past “super-interglacial” warm extremes when global sea-level was more than 5m higher than today. …

The Colorado River is approaching a crossroads. For the first time in its history, satisfying water demands in one state may require curtailing legally-recognized uses in another. This is not the first instance of water shortages in the region, and conflict among the seven Colorado River states is certainly not new. But the potential shortages on …

Degassing And Hydrothermal Activity At Mt. Spurr, Alaska During The Summer Of 2004 Inferred From The Complex Frequencies Of Long-Period Events, S. De Angelis, Stephen R. Mcnutt

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Results of analyses of unusual long-period earthquakes, recorded between July and September 2004 at Mt. Spurr, Alaska, are presented. The waveforms of these events are characterized by quasi-sinusoidal signatures of long duration (up to 40 sec) with slowly decaying amplitudes; bandwidths of 0.5–4.0 Hz are typical; amplitude spectra are marked by strong and sharp peaks, reflecting the quasi-monochromatic nature of the signal. The temporal variations of the complex frequencies are investigated by use of the Sompi method; the dominant mode is resolved and its Q factor estimated for each available event. Dominant frequencies are found in the band 0.8–2.2 Hz …

Roaded Catchments To Improve Reliability Of Farm Dams, David Stanton Jun 2005

Roaded Catchments To Improve Reliability Of Farm Dams, David Stanton

Bulletins 4000 -

Maintaining reliable on-farm water supplies is an on-going challenge for landholders throughout Western Australia. Improving reliability of dams by constructing a roaded catchment is one of the most cost-effective methods of improving the performance and reliability of a farm water supply.

A roaded catchment is a water-harvesting structure designed to increase the amount of run-off from the catchment above a dam. The 'roads' of a roaded catchment are parallel ridges of earth with batters (or side slopes) that cause run-off to be directed into troughs or channels. The surface is lined with clay and compacted to make it smooth and …

Laurance Lake Temperature Model, Chris Berger, Scott A. Wells, Robert Leslie Annear Jun 2005

Laurance Lake Temperature Model, Chris Berger, Scott A. Wells, Robert Leslie Annear

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Laurance Lake is a reservoir located in Hood River County, Oregon (Figure 1). It is located at the base on Mt. Hood in Oregon (see Figure 2 and Figure 3), discharges into the Middle Fork of the Hood River. The reservoir was constructed in 1968 for irrigation storage and has a capacity 3564 acre- feet at full pool. Since the river vio lates temperature standards, this study has been designed to construct a hydrodynamic and temperature model of Laurance reservoir in order to assess strategies for improving temperatures in the Middle Fork River.

The objectives of the study are then …

Aquitard Effect On Drawdown In Water Table Aquifers, Vitaly A. Zlotnik, Hongbin Zhan Jun 2005

Aquitard Effect On Drawdown In Water Table Aquifers, Vitaly A. Zlotnik, Hongbin Zhan

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The effects of an aquitard on drawdown in an overlying unconfined aquifer can be represented by a drainage-type term at the aquitard-aquifer interface. The functional form of this boundary condition is similar to the Boulton-Neuman boundary condition used for water table aquifers except the kernel contains an inverse square root of time instead of a negative exponential. Type curves using the new boundary condition were obtained in semianalytical form. Examples for several representative conditions show that the effect of the underlying aquitard can contribute to the type curve at early and intermediate times, but the effect becomes negligible at late …

An Improved Music Model For Gibbsite, Scott Christian Mitchell May 2005

An Improved Music Model For Gibbsite, Scott Christian Mitchell

Theses and Dissertations

Several recent studies that have proposed MUSIC models for gibbsite surfaces have purported to achieve a very good fit with potentiometric titration data. However, in order to achieve such results, several significant parameters, such as the number of surface sites, site densities, and pKa values were sometimes re-introduced in the model as fitted parameters, and physically unrealistic modeling assumptions were sometimes used. In addition, recent evidence supports the idea that some of the gibbsite potentiometric titration data from these studies may be unreliable. In order to re-interpret the potentiometric titration data, we used several recently published methods. In order to …

Evaluation Of Paleo-Climate For The Boise Area, Idaho, From The Last Glacial Maximum To The Present Based On Delta 2h And Delta 18o Groundwater Composition, Melissa Eileen Schlegel

Theses and Dissertations

There are four distinguishable groundwater systems in the Boise area, Idaho, U.S.A., identified as modern batholith, thermal batholith, Boise frontal fault, and Nampa-Caldwell systems (Figure 1). Modern batholith and thermal batholith groundwaters are located in Tertiary to Cretaceous aged granites and granodiorites of the Atlanta lobe of the Idaho Batholith. The frontal fault system near Boise, ID defines the southeastern edge of the Idaho Batholith, and divides the batholith from the western Snake River Plain. The Nampa-Caldwell system is in the volcanic, fluvial and pluvial sediments of the western Snake River Plain. Groundwater ages for these systems are modern, 5-15 …

Integrated Recombinant Protein Expression And Purification Platform Based On Ralstonia Eutropha, Gavin C. Barnard, Jesse D. Mccool, David W. Wood, Tillman U. Gerngross

Dartmouth Scholarship

Protein purification of recombinant proteins constitutes a significant cost of biomanufacturing and various efforts have been directed at developing more efficient purification methods. We describe a protein purification scheme wherein Ralstonia eutropha is used to produce its own “affinity matrix,” thereby eliminating the need for external chromatographic purification steps. This approach is based on the specific interaction of phasin proteins with granules of the intracellular polymer poly
