Assessment Of Nongame Bird Habitat Using Forest Survey Data, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service
Wildlife Conservation and Management
Forest Survey data have potential for use in obtaining information on the condition and diversity of the Nation's forest resources relevant to wildlife habitat that is needed for planning and monitoring at State and regional levels. In this study, Forest Survey data were used to assess nongame bird habitat potential based on food and shelter requirements on 24 plots. These assessments were then evaluated using bird numbers. Results of the analyses showed some correlation of bird numbers with tree canopy variables, and illustrate the potential for using Forest Survey data for wildlife habitat assessment, for identifying opportunities to improve habitat …

Preliminary Groundwater And Salinity Investigation In The Eastern Wheatbelt. 1. Brennand's Catchment, Richard J. George Dr, P W C Frantom
Resource management technical reports
Groundwaters were found to be 10 m below the floor of the ancestral playa lake in Brennand's catchment. They were extremely saline. A groundwater flow system was not established on much of the catchment. Flow was observed to be occurring from recharge areas near the playa lakes towards the midslopes of the catchment. Flow was apparently restricted from leaving Brennand's catchment because of obstruction to groundwaters created by dolerite dykes.

Soils Of The Ivanhoe Plain, East Kimberley, Western Australia, J M. Aldrick, M H R Van Cuylenburg, P W. Moody, B A. Wren, A J. Clarke
Technical Bulletins
The Ivanhoe Plain was divided into two geomorphic provinces. The principal difference between the provinces is the time during which pedogenesis occurred. The crcking clay soils of the northern province are generally more highly leached than their younger counterparts in the southern province. Sixteen land units are identified as distinct from soil units. These units give cognizance to vegetation and topographical features as well as soils.

The October 17, 1989, Loma Prieta, California, Earthquake And Its Aftershocks: Geometry Of The Sequence From High-Resolution Locations, Lynn D. Dietz, William L. Ellsworth
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Hypocenters of the Loma Prieta sequence form a dipping zone that rises from the mainshock hypocenter and is parallel to the mainshock nodal plane. Most aftershocks cluster around the perimeter of the zone, surrounding a relatively aseismic center which approximates the region of mainshock rapture. At its southeastern end, the dipping aftershock zone warps into a vertical surface that corresponds to the San Andreas fault. In the central and northwestern parts of the zone at depths above -10 km, the aftershocks define numerous disjoint fault structures. The large component of reverse-slip observed in this event agrees with a simple model …

Geraldton Rural-Residential Land Capability Study, R A. Dye, A M E Van Vreeswyk, Geoff Allan Moore
Land resources series
With a growing population in the Geraldton area, there is a demand for rural and coastal subdivision to provide for rural residential development and intensification of agricultural activities. Future land use planning for land use change and management of land to overcome existing land degradation problems should be based on land capability. This study provides a semi-detailed (1:50,000) soil and landform inventory for the immediate zone around Geraldton, south from Coronation Beach to Cape Burney along the coast, 13.7 km inland in the north and 7.6 km inland in the south. Eight land systems were identified in the land resource …

Busselton, Margaret River, Augusta: Land Capability Study, Peter J. Tille, Neil Clifton Lantzke
Land resources series
The study was done to ensure that information on the area's land resource, and its capability, is available for land use planning. This information will assist planners to make decisions which can allow for the optimal development of the land while avoiding land degradation or land use conflicts. A map showing the distribution of land units defined according to soil type, topography, drainage and wind exposure was prepared at a scale of 1:50,000. From this map a smaller scale, less detailed land systems map was drawn. Land capability, the ability of land to sustain a specific use without undesirable on-site …

Preliminary Groundwater And Salinity Investigation In The Eastern Wheatbelt. 4. Kitto's Hillslope, Tammin - 1985-90, Richard J. George Dr
Resource management technical reports
The investigation revealed that a deep, brackish to saline groundwater system and dolerite dyke, contained within the saprolite were responsible for the secondary salinity; the annual discharge of water and salt at the seep from the damp groundwater system was about 2800 kL and 17 tonnes respectively; and the water-tables were not rising and that the most appropriate management of the site was to plant salt tolerant forage plants in combination with trees.

Coseismic Stress Changes Induced By The 1989 Loma Prieta, California Earthquake, Andrew J. Michael, William L. Ellsworth, David H. Oppenheimer
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Earthquake focal mechanisms from before and after the 1989 Loma Prieta, California earthquake are used to infer the coseismic stress change. Before the main shock, most earthquakes correspond to right lateral slip on planes sub-parallel to the San Andreas fault, and imply a generally N-S most compressionsal stress axis anda vertical intermediate stress axis. Aftershocks within the main shock rupture zone, however, display almost every style and orientation of faulting, implying an extremely heterogeneous stress field. This suggests that the main shock relieved most, if not all, of the shear stress acting on its fault plane. Aftershocks that lie on …

The 1989 Saltland Survey, Richard George
The 1989 Saltland Survey, Richard George
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
In March 1989, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) surveyed farmers in Western Australia to determine the area of previously arable land that was now too saline for conventional agriculture. Farmers reported that 443,441 ha, or 2.83 per cent, of the 15.7 million hectares of cleared farm land in south-western Australia, was saline. This was an increase of about 180,000 ha on the 1979 survey figure.
The worst affected areas were in the 350 mm to 600 mm rainfall zone and included the Shires of Tammin (9.26 per cent arable area saline), Katanning (7.96 per cent), Goomalling (7.93 per cent), …

Plant Growth And Survival In Saline, Waterlogged Soils, Ed Barrett-Lennard, Neil Davidson, Richard Galloway
Plant Growth And Survival In Saline, Waterlogged Soils, Ed Barrett-Lennard, Neil Davidson, Richard Galloway
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Waterlogged soils in Western Australia are often salt-affected. Recent research has shown that the interaction between waterlogging and salinity has a far greater adverse effect on plant groivth and survival than either of these two factors individually. The consequences of the combined effects of salt and waterlogging for most plant species are increased salt uptake, reduced growth, chlorosis (yellowing of leaves), defoliation, and death. Salt sensitive agricultural species (nonhalophytes) are more severely affected by this interaction than salt tolerant species (halophytes).

Shallow Drains For Reducing Waterlogging And Salinity On Clay Flats, Don Mcfarlane, Tim Negus, Arjen Ryder
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Flooding, waterlogging and salinity are problems which commonly occur together on the broad valleys of the wheatbelt. Drainage lines often become poorly defined once they reach the valleys and flood waters spread out, causing inundation and waterlogging. This excess water needs to be controlled because it contributes to salinity
Waterlogging Limits Growth On Duplex Soils, Bob Belford, Miles Dracup, David Tennant
Waterlogging Limits Growth On Duplex Soils, Bob Belford, Miles Dracup, David Tennant
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Duplex soils - soils with a sandy topsoil overlying a clayey subsoil -are ividespread in Western Australia's agricultural areas (see map). These soils are potentially highly productive, but crop growth is variable and the soils can become waterlogged. Work on a duplex soil site near Beverley has shoivn that the soil ivaterlogs where the permeability of the clay is low, and that this permeability varies ividely over the site. Waterlogging accounts for an average of half of the variation in wheat yields on this site; surprisingly, lupins have so far appeared less sensitive to waterlogging- The Department of Agriculture and …
Waterlogging : How It Reduces Plant Growth And How Plants Can Overcome Its Effects, Tim Setter, Bob Belford
Waterlogging : How It Reduces Plant Growth And How Plants Can Overcome Its Effects, Tim Setter, Bob Belford
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Lack of oxygen is the major cause of limited plant growth in waterlogged soils. When soils become waterlogged less gas diffuses to and from the roots through the soil pores; there are changes in concentrations of mineral elements in soil solutions; and toxic products of roots and soil microorganisms begin to accumulate. These changes adversely affect germination, growth and development of plants.

Constraints On The Emplacement And Uplift History Of The Pine Mountain Thrust Sheet, Eastern Kentucky: Evidence From Coal Rank Trends, Kieran D. O'Hara, James C. Hower, Susan M. Rimmer
Earth and Environmental Sciences Faculty Publications
In this paper coal rank trends on both sides of the Pine Mountain thrust in eastern Kentucky are used to place constraints on thrust evolution. Vitrinite reflectance () measurements on a single Pennsylvanian coal horizon (Fire Clay coal) in eastern Kentucky increase from 0.5% in the north to about 1.0% toward the SE in front of the Pine Mountain thrust. The same horizon in the hangingwall of the thrust displays lower Rmax values (0.8-0.85%). The reflectance isograds are subparallel to the thrust within approximately 10 km of the trace of the fault. We attribute thermal maturation to (1) pre-orogenic …

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
The East Berlin Formation (Lower Jurassic, Hartford basin, Connecticut, U.S.A.) is distinctive for its six cyclic units of lacustrine black shale and gray mudstone. separated by playa and fluvial redbeds. The black shales arc each about a meter thick and were deposited in subtropical, thermally stratified, oligomictic lakes, the youngest of which (lakes 3 through 6) were large enough to flood most of the basin and attained depths of several tens of meters.
The saturate fractions of solvent extracts of organic-rich black shales from each of the six lakes, collected at fresh roadcuts near East Berlin, arc dominated by extended …
