Analysis Of Parasequences With Paleo-Geographical Reconstruction Of The Miocene Reservoirs Of The Main Pass Region In The Gulf Of Mexico, John Walker O'Donnell
Analysis Of Parasequences With Paleo-Geographical Reconstruction Of The Miocene Reservoirs Of The Main Pass Region In The Gulf Of Mexico, John Walker O'Donnell
Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive
Reservoir sands in the Main Pass region of the Gulf of Mexico have proved to be highly productive, accounting for 56 million barrels of oil and 47 billion cubic feet of gas in just the 4 lease blocks covered in this study. Having a thorough understanding of the depositional trends that created these reservoirs and their relation to the reservoir’s performance is paramount to the success of field development. Post depositional structure is removed through the process of correlation among chrono-stratigraphically equivalent surfaces. Characteristic log signatures from the wells in the trend are then interpreted, resulting in a model of …

Understanding and quantifying reservoir quality require a new suite of knowledge when approaching the nanometer sized pore-networks of unconventional reservoirs. These low porosity and permeability reservoirs have been produced in major basins all over the world, but characterizing their pore networks has been fairly recent in its application. One of the challenges of quantifying reservoir characteristics like porosity, pore size distribution, permeability, and tortuosity in unconventional reservoirs is the abundance of their nanometer-sized pore systems. Pore systems in these rocks tend to behave differently and with less predictability than the conventional reservoir. The Spraberry Formation in the Midland Basin of …

Characterization Of Nanopetrophysical Properties Of The Mancos “B”/ Prairie Canyon Member Of The Mancos Shale, Rio Blanco, Colorado, Scott Brian Leaseburge
Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive
Over the past decade hydrocarbon production from unconventional reservoirs has grown to become a significant source of North American domestic energy and will likely continue so for decades to come. However, production from unconventional reservoirs is plagued with low overall recovery and sharp declines in production. Low matrix permeability and poor pore connectively are significant factors limiting recovery and production. Research into the fluid flow characteristics of low permeability reservoirs can lead to extended initial production and greater overall recovery. Technically recoverable unconventional oil and gas resources in the Mancos Shale of the Piceance Basin are estimated to be 66.3 …
Petrophysical Properties Of The Woodford Formation In The Ardmore Basin In Oklahoma, U.S.A, Benjamin Ryan
Petrophysical Properties Of The Woodford Formation In The Ardmore Basin In Oklahoma, U.S.A, Benjamin Ryan
Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive
A prolific source rock in Oklahoma, the Woodford Shale has sourced petroleum reservoirs for millions of years and produced oil and gas since 1939. Not until the shale boom of the early 2000’s was the full potential of the Woodford Shale, as a reservoir, realized. The focus of this research is to characterize three (the main ones) of the four petro-physically distinct zones within the Ardmore Woodford Shale in order to investigate the ideal zone for hydrocarbon extraction. The Woodford Shale is composed of tight, organic-rich, interbedded shale and chert beds deposited along a marine slope. Due to its tight …
Nano-Scale Petrophysical Studies Of The Gothic Shale Interval In The Paradox Basin, Colorado, U.S.A., Marvin L. Dunbar
Nano-Scale Petrophysical Studies Of The Gothic Shale Interval In The Paradox Basin, Colorado, U.S.A., Marvin L. Dunbar
Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive
Hydrocarbon production from shale has become a main energy source for the United States. Consequently, an increased knowledge of the petrophysical properties of shale such as porosity, permeability, tortuosity, and fluid-rock interactions (e.g., contact angle, imbibition) will improve production efficiency. Because of their minute size (nanoscale), the knowledge of pore structure (i.e., pore geometry and connectivity) has proven difficult to understand. Analyzing the pore size distribution and pore connectivity of Gothic Shale from selected locations in the Montezuma County of Colorado will lead to recommendations for greater oil production efficiency, fostering innovation into a thriving, environmentally safe, oil and gas …
Mapping Structural Deformation Associated With The Formation Of The Blue Ridge Salt Dome, Mason Phillip Bonner
Mapping Structural Deformation Associated With The Formation Of The Blue Ridge Salt Dome, Mason Phillip Bonner
Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive
Geologic mapping and subsurface imaging around salt has remained difficult. Seismic imaging is difficult near salt due to the large velocity contrasts between salt and the surrounding rocks, the steeply dipping salt and sediment interface, and the presence of pinching beds on the flanks of the dome; but when combined with well control from previously drilled wells on top and on the flanks of a salt dome, a more complete profile of the subsurface structure becomes possible. Previous work has produced models of salt dome formation and the surrounding structural deformation, and when compared to seismic data, show a good …

Nanopetrophysics Characterization Of The Mancos Shale Formation In The San Juan Basin Of Northwestern New Mexico, U.S.A., Richard Kalteyer
Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive
The Mancos Shale of the San Juan Basin is no stranger to the drilling of oil and gas, but traditional exploration within the region has predominantly been limited to the use of conventional vertical wells. Due to the recent advances in drilling and completion technologies, a large focus of oil and gas exploration has shifted towards the development of unconventional reservoirs. Because of these significant breakthroughs, it comes as no surprise that an increased interest in further developing the Mancos Shale has taken place. However, like most unconventional plays, low porosity and extremely low permeability characterize the Mancos Shale. These …

An Integrated Evaluation Of Potential Petroleum Systems Of The Southern Carnarvon Basin, Western Australia, James E. Hobbs
Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive
The Southern Carnarvon Basin is an elongate basin in Western Australia covering approximately 200,000km2. There are two main regions: a western platform (Gascoyne Platform) with a Cambrian to Lower Carboniferous succession that has mostly flat-lying Cretaceous-Cenozoic cover; and an eastern set of half-grabens (Merlinleigh Sub-basin) forming a single mid-Carboniferous – Permian depocenter, now separated by a gneissic basement of the Carrandibby Inlier, which is considered to be a part of the Merlinleigh Sub-basin. The two regions have little in common except for sharing a Devonian to Lower Carboniferous succession and both have predominantly Paleozoic infill. Tectonics processes recorded in the …
Global Marine Carbon Export Production During Eocene Hyperthermal Events, Angela Ruth Lewis
Global Marine Carbon Export Production During Eocene Hyperthermal Events, Angela Ruth Lewis
Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive
Early Eocene hyperthermal events can be an analog for global warming. Pelagic marine barite in deep sea sediment is a proxy for marine export production of organic matter into the deep ocean. Pelagic marine barite accumulation rates (BAR) were reconstructed over the Paleocene – Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM; ~55.5 million years ago), Eocene Thermal Maximum 2 (ETM2; ~53.7 Ma) and ETM3 (~52.4 Ma) from ODP Sites 1209, 1215 and 1263. Northern Atlantic samples (with high detrital content) were acid digested and analyzed to reconstruct biogenic Ba (Ba/Al, Ba/Ti) and compare with elemental data from high resolution X-ray fluorescence. This data …
Enrichment Of Volcanogenic Trace Elements In A Continuous Subsurface Eagle Ford Core In South Texas And The Origin Of The Oceanic Anoxic Event Ii At The Cenomanian-Turonian (C/T) Boundary, Daniel Valencia
Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive
The Upper Cretaceous Eagle Ford Shale of South Texas is a dark grey to black, sporadically laminated, organic rich carbonaceous mud rock located in the subsurface (~13,000), of the hydrocarbon producing shale-oil formation. This black shale formation was deposited contemporaneously worldwide across the Cenomanian-Turonian (C/T) boundary and records the Oceanic Anoxic Event (OAE-II). Geochronological and geochemical analysis of a ~300ft long continuous South Texas Eagle Ford Shale core was conducted to further constrain the sub-surface nature of the formation. Major, minor and trace element concentrations were analyzed by ED-XRF to characterize the local geochemical heterogeneity in the formation. Total Organic …

Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive
Storr’s Lake, a hypersaline lake located on San Salvador Island, Bahamas, contains modern, fine-grained stromatolites. This study focused on two morphological types of stromatolitic mounds in Storr’s Lake (pinnacle mound and plateau-mushroom) and systematically investigated their mineralogy, elemental abundance, carbon, oxygen and magnesium (Mg) isotopic signature to gain insights into the organomineralization process and laminae formation of stromatolites. In addition, the hydrochemistry of Storr’s Lake was characterized by in situ measurement of water parameters, elemental analysis, and Mg isotope investigation. Cations and anions analysis indicates the lake is spatially homogenous and shows little seasonal variation. Mg isotope analysis of the …

Nano-Petrophysics Of The Hybrid Shale-Oil Bone Spring Formation, Lea County, New Mexico, Jordan Bevers
Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive
Despite the increased hydrocarbon production in hydraulically stimulated unconventional reservoirs, how fluid flows through the rock matrix in these reservoirs is still not well understood. It has been shown that much of the porosity in unconventional mudrocks is nanometer in size, making research challenging as analyzing these pores requires specialized methodologies. These pore networks affect fluid flow by their pore sizes, pore throats, and topology (pore connectivity). The Bone Spring Formation is one of the fastest growing unconventional plays in the world. It is a hybrid shale-oil system with high total organic carbon (TOC) source rocks juxtaposed against organic-lean reservoir …

A Megabreccia With Associated Stratigraphy Of The Cherry Canyon And Bell Canyon Formations Transition (Guadalupian, Middle Permian), Southern Delaware Mountains, West Texas, Johnathon Lee Bogacz
Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive
The Cherry Canyon and Bell Canyon Formations (Guadalupian, Middle Permian) are well exposed in the southern part of the Delaware Mountains, West Texas and are marked by the presence of several distinct and widespread debris flows. Various lithostratigraphic units (members) of these two formations were originally named for exposures in the Guadalupe Mountains and the northern part of the Delaware Mountains, West Texas. These units are not easily recognized litho-stratigraphically in the southern part of the Delaware Mountains, but some correlations can be made by using biostratigraphic methods. One of the easily recognizable debris flows in the southern Delaware Mountains …

Petrography And Geochemistry Of Continental Carbonates In South Texas: Implications For Oligocene-Miocene Paleoclimate And Paleoenvironment Near Sea Level, Conan Ray Godfrey
Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive
The Oligocene-Miocene Catahoula, Oakville, and Goliad formations in south Texas contain abundant continental carbonates which are useful in reconstructing paleoclimate and paleoenvironment in a near sea level region. Field observations and thin section characterizations identify three types of pedogenic carbonates, including rhizoliths, carbonate nodules, and platy horizons, and two types of groundwater carbonates, including cemented beds and carbonate concretions. The pedogenic carbonates display sharp upper contacts and diffuse lower contacts, and contain soil structural elements and biogenic elements related to root action. Under microscope, the pedogenic carbonates are micritic with clotted micrite, micrite laminations, and alveolar-septal structures and display dull …

Geochemical And Petrophysical Characteristics Of The Horn River Formation: British Columbia, Ca, Joseph Anthony Sortore
Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive
The Devonian Horn River basin of northeastern British Columbia is the largest producing shale gas field in Canada. It has an estimated 500-600 TCF of light hydrocarbons in place stacked in multiple formations in an over-pressured setting conducive to, but too tight for natural flow. Not until the development of new drilling and production technologies were implemented a little over a decade ago were these massive resource plays able to be exploited. Shale development in British Columbia began in 2005 with the Triassic Montney Play, and shortly after that the Horn River Play in 2007. As of 2012, the Horn …
Improving Regional Hydrology Forecasting For The North Central Texas Region Utilizing Conditional Ensemble Streamflow And Hydrometeorological Condition Predictions With Artificial Neural Network Modeling, Tyler Fincannon
Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive
The predictive skill of hydrologic variables such as streamflow and soil moisture, in North Central Texas, has improved substantially in the recent decades. However, substantial model-data biases are still present during extreme climate events, such as droughts and flash floods. In this study, we have optimized the Hydraulic Ensemble Forecasting System (HEFS) through development of a conditional ensemble streamflow system, as well as forecast reservoir hydrometeorological conditions (e.g. drought indices) with an artificial neural network (ANN) model. Improving prediction of these reservoir conditions enables more effective reservoir management in terms of water resource and energy efficiency during regional weather and …
Tectonic Processes And Continental Hydroclimate During The Laramide Deformation In The Central Rocky Mountains, Min Gao
Earth & Environmental Sciences Dissertations - Archive
The central Rocky Mountains in western U.S.A. is a geologic province formed by the low-angle subduction of the Farallon oceanic plate under the North American continental plate during the latest Cretaceous–early Eocene Laramide orogeny. The tectonic processes and mechanism, the paleotopography and depositional environment, and the evolution of continental hydroclimate during the Laramide deformation remain controversial. This dissertation examines the tectonic processes of the Laramide orogeny throughout the entire central Rocky Mountains, and paleotopography, depositional processes, and paleoclimate in the Greater Green River Basin in southwestern Wyoming. The first project of this study uses a 2D flexural subsidence modeling method …

Implications Of Lithofacies Association And Architecture For Low And High-Accommodation System Tracts From The Sandstone Dominated Zone ( The Barren Series) Of The Cretaceous-Paleocene Raton Formation, Trinidad, Colorado, Yaqoub Y Y S M Alsayed Alrefaei
Earth & Environmental Sciences Dissertations - Archive
The Raton Formation is an Upper Cretaceous and Lower Paleocene unit that is interpreted to be deposited in various stages of high-accommodation fluvial systems. High-accommodation flood basin deposits are generally considered poor as reservoir bodies because sand bodies within these basins are considered to be small and disconnected within flood basin mud. Accordingly, they gain less attention in oil and gas exploration and in research. High-accommodation deposits in the Raton Formation contain several sand bodies with different sizes and geometries that could be good candidates for reservoir rocks. These sand bodies are common in outcrops of high-accommodation deposits in the …
Experimental Constraints On The Micromechanics Of Brittle Fragmentation During Earthquake Rupture, Troy J. Barber
Experimental Constraints On The Micromechanics Of Brittle Fragmentation During Earthquake Rupture, Troy J. Barber
Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive
Various fault damage fabrics, from gouge in the principal slip zone, to fragmented and pulverized rocks in the fault damage zone, have been attributed to brittle deformation at high strain rates during earthquake rupture. These fault zone fabrics are significant in terms of 1) the information they contain about coseismic deformation mechanisms, 2) the role they play in dissipating energy and contributing to slip weakening during earthquake rupture, and 3) their influence on fault rock mechanical and hydraulic properties. Past experimental work has shown that there exists a critical threshold in stress-strain rate space through which rock failure transitions from …
Nanopetrophysics Of The Niobrara Formation In Berthoud State #3 Well, Rafael Roberto Villegas
Nanopetrophysics Of The Niobrara Formation In Berthoud State #3 Well, Rafael Roberto Villegas
Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive
The advent of new drilling and completion technologies over the past two decades has made unconventional shale reservoirs the focus of much of the oil and gas exploration and production throughout the United States. Despite large estimated reserves, unconventional reservoirs are typically characterized by low porosity and extremely low matrix permeability, partly accounting for the relatively low recovery rates seen, ranging from 10-15%. Increasing production from unconventional reservoirs requires an understanding of the reservoir’s nano-petrophysical properties including pore throat size distribution and edge accessible porosity. Furthermore, an understanding of the relationship between TOC, mineralogy, and pore throat distribution is critical …

Coupled Geochemical And Nano-Petrophysical Study Of The Spraberry-Wolfcamp Trend; West Texas, U.S.A., Ryan P. Quintero
Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive
With the rise in interest of unconventional plays, efforts have moved to understand these formations across 12 orders of magnitude through nm-km scale. Recent work by others has shown the importance of the nanometer range due to the fact this is the predominant pore size within shales. In attempt to understand nanopore structure and production behavior within a shale unconventional reservoir, a number of complementary experimental methods must be employed. This research involves the use of wettability droplet analysis for micron scale assessment of wetting properties and Mercury Intrusion Capillary Pressure (MICP) analysis for pore structure characterization within the Spraberry …
A Modern Reservoir Analog For A Poorly Drained “High Accommodation” Fluvial System: Sedimentary Processes, Architecture, And Reservoir Connectivity Of The Grijalva System, Tabasco State, Mexico, Mark Hull
Earth & Environmental Sciences Dissertations - Archive
High-accommodation fluvial systems are subject to much modeling and substantial rock drilling and imagination, but limited modern field observation. The Grijalva River system of Tabasco State, Mexico offers the opportunity to study these systems. In this area, subsidence rates of up to 9 mm/year result in high-accommodation conditions for the river as it approaches the Gulf Coast in southern Mexico. Lakes and small propagating channels, similar to what are commonly called “tie” channels, dominate the flood basin between major channel belts. Understanding of the co-evolution of lakes and tie channels is key to understanding the overall high-accommodation system. Tie channels …

Identifying the sources of lead (Pb) in indoor dust by analysis of the contents of the dust provides an opportunity to mitigate the source of contamination. In this study, it is hypothesized that in residential properties where there exist the potential for friction surfaces to contribute old lead-based paint to the dust such material can be identified by microscopic examination of the dust. Although old lead-based paint in such circumstances can be implicated, without studying the dust it is impossible to know whether some other contributing source may be important. Exterior soil and dust that potentially can enter the home …
Sensitivity Of The Younger Dryas Climate To Changes In Freshwater, Orbital, And Greenhouse Gas Forcing In Comprehensive Climate Models, Taylor Michelle Hughlett
Sensitivity Of The Younger Dryas Climate To Changes In Freshwater, Orbital, And Greenhouse Gas Forcing In Comprehensive Climate Models, Taylor Michelle Hughlett
Earth & Environmental Sciences Dissertations - Archive
The Younger Dryas cooling event (~12,900 years before present) was the most recent abrupt climate change in the geologic record where climate for the Northern Hemisphere returned to a near-glacial state. The cause of this cooling event is widely controversial, and no consensus has been found as to why the onset of the cooling occurred. Of the several hypotheses proposed, the freshening of the North Atlantic Ocean due to meltwater discharge from the retreating Lake Agassiz and subsequent changes in oceanic circulation is the most widely accepted one. Additionally, this abrupt climate change can be attributed to other changes in …

⁸⁷Sr/⁸⁶Sr As A Potential Fingerprint For Determining The Provenance Of Total Dissolved Solids Associated With Hydraulic Fracturing Activities In The Barnett Shale, Texas, Richard Brian Goldberg
Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive
Over the last decade there has been a dramatic increase in unconventional drilling that utilizes hydraulic fracturing to extract oil and gas. The Barnett Shale in north central Texas has been a significant contributor to this increase in unconventional production. Potential environmental contamination from hydraulic fracturing and associated activities is a topic of current debate. One concern is the management of produced/flowback water (PFW), which contains high amounts of total dissolved solids (TDS) acquired from interaction with the reservoir formation and its constituents. Development and testing of geochemical methods to determine if a particular contaminant is the result of PFW …

A significant area of research within the Oil and Gas industry centers around the understanding of rock brittleness and fracture mechanics related to inducing and extending hydraulic fractures. This study defines rock brittleness as the fracture density, or the fracture surface area per unit volume (m-1), at a particular strain state. The first goal of this research was to test whether or not the strain conditions of various rock layers were constant using a geomechanically derived equation, 242(1+)=1−2+, where Fd is fracture density, Kic is fracture toughness, u is the shear modulus, v is Poisson’s Ratio, and A and B …
