Study On The Diagenetic Calcareous Accumulations In A Soil Profile From Floresti (Cluj County, Romania), Horea Bedelean Mar 2012

Study On The Diagenetic Calcareous Accumulations In A Soil Profile From Floresti (Cluj County, Romania), Horea Bedelean

Studia UBB Geologia

The studied calcretes developed in two different levels (horizons) in the soil profile from Floreşti (Cluj County). The deposits outcropping in the area are represented by Bartonian-Priabonian sedimentary rocks (Ciuleni Member, Viştea Limestone) and the Quaternary horizon (terrace of Someşul Mic River, consisting of pebbles of different origin), which represent the parent rock of the soil. A detailed petrographical and mineralogical description of the calcretes is given below, based on macroscopic, microscopic and X-ray diffraction analysis. It led to the conclusion that the calcretes from the studied profile have a pedogenic origin. The calcretes consist of distinctive subhorizons within the …

Transport And Emplacement Of Ignimbrites And Resedimented Volcaniclastics From Gutai Mts., Eastern Carpathians, Romania, Alexandrina FüLöP

Studia UBB Geologia

Gutâi Mts. had started to be built up in Middle Miocene, ca. 15.4 Ma ago. A series of explosive events developed starting with a major magmatic explosion and caldera collapse responsible for large volumes of ignimbrites. Successive explosions followed caldera collapse triggering a series of pyroclastic currents that underwent subsequent reworking. Mass flow has been the main transport mechanism recorded by the sedimentary structures of either ignimbrites or post-ignimbrites volcaniclastics. Multiple ignimbrite units resulted from subaerial mass flows, successively emplaced by progressive aggradation from the basal layer of a density-stratified pyroclastic current. The overlying sequence is composed of different volcaniclastics …

Raman Spectroscopy On Gem-Quality Microcrystalline And Amorphous Silica Varieties From Romania, Dana Pop, Ciprian Constantina, Dan TăTar, Wolfgang Kiefer

Studia UBB Geologia

Previous micro-Raman investigations on a wide range of types of microcrystalline silica samples have evidenced the presence of a new silica polymorph, i.e. moganite, in virtually every sample. In order to test the ubiquity of moganite in such geological materials in Romania, micro-Raman measurements were performed on gem-quality microcrystalline quartz (chalcedony, including agate and jasper) and additionally on quasi-amorphous silica (opal, silicified wood) samples from different occurrences. All the studied materials, including the quasi-amorphous varieties contain moganite in variable amounts (from traces up to local concentrations of 75 wt. %). Establishing correlations between colour and texture of the chemically-“pure” micro-crystalline …

Mineralogy And Technological Properties Of Some Kaolin Types Used In The Ceramic Industry, Marcel Benea, Maria Gorea

Studia UBB Geologia

Three different kaolin types used in ceramic industry were analyzed by different methods in order to obtain a complete mineralogical and technological characterisation. Studies were carried out by using a combination of analyses (XRD, SEM, methylene blue absorption, particle size distribution) of both the bulk sample, and the fine fraction. The main technological characteristics (drying and firing shrinkage, Pfefferkorn plasticity index, rheology, resistance, and colour after firing) of the ceramic masses prepared by using the analyzed kaolin types were also established. As a result, a direct relationship between the mineralogical composition and particle size distribution of different kaolin types vs. …

Metallogeny Of The Gold Quadrilateral: Style And Characteristics Of Epithermal - Subvolcanic Mineralized Structures, South Apuseni Mts., Romania, Șerban-Nicolae Vlad, Eugen Orlandea

Studia UBB Geologia

The Romanian territory contains numerous ore deposits mined since pre-Roman times. An assessment of historical gold production of the Gold Quadri-lateral (GQ) yielded a total estimate of 55.7 Moz of gold throughout an area of 2400 km2. Interpreted in terms of mineralization density this is 23,208 oz of gold/ km2. The geological setting of the GQ is represented mainly by Tertiary (14.7 My to 7.4 My) calc-alkaline volcano-plutonic complexes of intermediate character in sedimentary basins of molasse type. These basins are tectonically controlled by NW-SE lineation across early Alpine magmatic products, i.e. subduction related Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous igneous association (island arc …

Upper Triassic (Norian-Rhaetian) New Thalamid Sponges From Northern Calabria (Southern Italy), Baba Senowbari-Daryan, Valeria Zamparelli

Studia UBB Geologia

Two new “sphinctozoan” sponges, Calabrisiphonella labyrinthica nov. gen., nov. sp. and Calabrispongia globosa nov. gen., nov. sp., are described from reef boulders derived from Triassic dolomites (“Dolomia principale“) of the Argentino valley in Northern Calabria (Southern Italy). Calabrisiphonella is an Amblysiphonella-type sponge characterized by having a complicated canal system (labyrinth-like) within the chamber walls. The structure of Calabrispongia is similar to some Paleozoic or Jurassic "Stromatoporoidea“, which are attributed to the sponges. The systemtic position of both sponges, described here, is discussed. The age of the sponge-bearing reefs represented in the boulders is Norian-Rhaetian.

The microfacies is represented by a wackestone composed to about 70 % of dismembered laterals of Hirundoporella dachsteinensis n. sp.

Correlations Between The Air Pollution And The Rainfall Composition In Jiului Valley Area, Eugen Traistă, MăDăLina Ionică, Vlad Codrea, Ovidiu Barbu Mar 2012

Correlations Between The Air Pollution And The Rainfall Composition In Jiului Valley Area, Eugen Traistă, MăDăLina Ionică, Vlad Codrea, Ovidiu Barbu

Studia UBB Geologia

Rainfall composition is conditional on the air quality. If the air is polluted, the rainfall will be also polluted. In fact, rainfall contains the same compounds like the air as nitrites, nitrates, sulphites, sulphates, ammonia etc. Some cations like calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium are present in rainfall because of dust. This paper presents the air qualities and the soil composition influenced by the rainfall in one of the most polluted mining areas from our country, Jiului Valley.

Studia UBB Geologia

This research concerned three profiles developed on Eocene (Priabonian) gypsum parent material from Stana (Cluj district) in order to investigate their properties. The soil and parent material samples were collected from individual horizons in each profile. Both the mineralogical and structural-textural features of the parent material (evaporitic deposits) reflect the depositional context. From a mineralogical point of view, the deposits are represented by gypsum, and anhydrite. Typical sulfate facies are present: laminitic, nodular, gypscretic, and entherolitic. Physical and mineralogical properties of the soil layers were determined in the laboratory. The field observations and the results of the analyses allowed us …

Identification Of The Source Areas For The Paleogene Turbiditic Deposits Of The Pienidian Units In Maramures, Carlo Aroldi Mar 2012

Identification Of The Source Areas For The Paleogene Turbiditic Deposits Of The Pienidian Units In Maramures, Carlo Aroldi

Studia UBB Geologia

The Pienides are structural units formed almost exclusively of deep-water siliciclastic deposits, Middle Jurassic-Oligocene in age, belonging of an oceanic crust-bearing domain. The Pienides form an elongate belt extending from Western Carpathians to Poiana Botizei (Maramureş, northern Romania), which represents the easternmost outcrop of these units in the Eastern Carpa-thians. Petrographic analyses on sandstones of different nappes combined with sedimentologic studies (depositional systems, palaeocurrents) allow to con-sider the Inner Dacides (forming the pre-Apulian continental margin) the most probable source unit for most of the siliciclastic successions of the Pienides. The present arrangement of the structural units, geophysical and subsurface data …

The Mineralogical Characteristics Of The Hydrothermal Types Alteration From Nistru Ore Deposit, Baia Mare Metallogenetic District, Floarea Damian

Studia UBB Geologia

The hydrothermal alteration types, which have affected intrusive and volcanic rocks from Nistru ore deposit, are related to fluids composition varied in their evolution within hydrothermal systems. The early stage of the hydrothermal activity has produced extensive propylitisation and potassic alteration (orthoclase, biotite, sericite) associated with the central part of the quartz-micromonzodioritic porphyry stock. The late stage of the fluids differentiation is determined by the hydrogen-ion metasomatism (phyllic alteration, argillic alteration), characterized by a large vertical variation. The hydrogen-ion metasomatism is associated with the bor metasomatism, generated by acid solutions and at a high temperature. The vertical and lateral zoning …

Hydrothermal Breccia Pipe Structures: General Features And Genetic Criteria - Ii Phreatic Breccia, CăLin G. TăMaș, Jean-P. Milési

Studia UBB Geologia

Phreatic and phreatomagmatic breccias are the two end-member styles of hydromagmatic breccias. A previous contribution deals with phreatomagmatic breccias with an emphasis on their general features and those genetic criteria that allow an accurate and rapid recognition. Phreatic breccias are presented here. Their general features, i.e. environment/ depth of formation, general form/geometry, dimensions, contacts with the host rocks, fragments, matrix, alteration, mineralization, surface connection, fluidization and facies changes were examined. Furthermore, genetic criteria, very useful in phreatic breccia recognition are summarized.

Petrology Of Badenian Ignimbrites, Gutai Mts. (Eastern Carpathians), Alexandrina FüLöP, Marinel Kovacs

Studia UBB Geologia

Gutâi Mts., part of inner Carpathians volcanic arc, consist of products of felsic and intermediate volcanism. The previously known “Badenian Rhyodacitic Formation”, expression of the felsic explosive volcanism, is composed of a well-defined basal unit of ignimbrites, overlain by a sequence of resedimented volcaniclastics of similar origin, interlayered with mudstones. The petrography of ignimbrites shows matrix-supported lapilli tuffs having a heterogeneous composition with insignificant lateral variations. The juvenile components, pumice, glass shards and crystals of plagioclase, quartz and biotite are predominant; cognate nonvesicular glassy clasts are rare, unlike accidental clasts of sedimentary and metamorphic rocks which are abundant. Pyroxene andesite …

Studia UBB Geologia

An Uppermost Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) site exposing dinosaur footprints is reported from the Sebes̡ area (Transylvanian Depression). This is the first dinoturbated layer discovered in our country, containing also numerous bones belonging to various dinosaurs. The track-site is located near Lancrăm village and provides only two quite well preserved footprints (one track). The medium sized (FL = 23,3 cm; FW = 17,8 cm; pace = 103 cm; ST = 200 cm) plantigrad-tridactyle footprints belong to Ornithopedoidei, according to their morphology. An assignment to the Iguanodontichnus CASAMIQUELA & FASOLA, 1968 group seems to be appropriate (tentatively, associated to the “Rhabdodon” iguanodontian dinosaur). …
